If you're in Hilton Head during the fall, you'll likely spot dozens of butterflies around the beach and feeding on flower nectar around the island as they began their migration down south. If you aren't in town for the magnificient butterfly migration, head to the Coastal Discovery Museum — it has its own butterfly habitat that's open from May to October. John Dreyer Getty Images

If you're in Hilton Head during the spring or fall, keep your eyes peeled for alligators. They typically seclude themselves to the island's many lagoons and creeks, but they often emerge from the water during these seasons to regulate their body temperature by catching some rays.
