Best Times to Visit Hilton Head

The best time to visit Hilton Head is April and May as well as September and October. Spring and fall offer fewer crowds and lower lodging rates all the while maintaining temperatures that are still beach-friendly. Summer is also a great time to visit the island, as the weather is perfect for swimming in the ocean. If you're not one for crowds, which Hilton Head gets a lot of during the summer, you may want to opt for a visit during the shoulder seasons. If you want to save some money and don't mind bringing a couple sweaters with you to the beach, winter isn't a bad time to visit either thanks to high temperatures in the mid-60s.

April and May

April and May in Hilton Head offer a taste of summer for visitors. During this time, crowds are sparse and temperatures are still warm enough to enjoy a day at the beach. In April, you can expect temperatures in the high 70s and lows in the high 50s, while May ushers in daytime temps reaching the mid-80s and nighttime temps rest in the high 60s. By this time, water sport rental outfitters have opened for the season, meaning your island activities aren't limited to just the beach. And if you're a golf fan, come mid-April to watch the RBC Heritage PGA golf tournament.

Key Events:

June-August

Summer is the most popular time to visit Hilton Head. During this time, all seasonal activities and adventures outfitters have officially reopened and 90-degree daytime temps make the ocean's water most comfortable for swimming. As such, both local and faraway visitors grace the island to take advantage of the season's offerings. If you don't mind the crowds and paying premium summer lodging rates, summer is most definitely your season. Just be sure to bring an umbrella with you. Summer sees the most rain of any other time during the year, with the most occurring during August. But don't worry too much about rain here; showers are known to be quick.

September-October

Due to its environment, Hilton Head doesn't experience a traditional fall. Here, the leaf color stays the same and daytime temperatures don't require a sweater. Instead, you can still swim in September. Thanks to the island's lingering summers, average daytime temps reach the high 80s while lows hang in the high 60s. What's more, summer crowds have long gone so you'll have more space on both the beaches and the trails. In October, the heat starts to taper off, but the island remains warm with average temperatures reaching the high 70s and nighttime temps resting in the low 50s.

The only drawback to visiting during this time is that it's peak hurricane season. Hurricanes rarely hit the island, but if there are hurricanes or tropical storms near the area, Hilton Head will likely see some precipitation, so bring an umbrella just in case.

Key Events:

November-March

This time of the year is the low season in Hilton Head. Few visitors grace the island as the temperatures dip from the high 70s and low 80s to the low 70s, 60s and oftentimes 50s during the day. And at night, you're going to need a coat, as temperatures have been known to plunge to the low 30s and 40s. The upside to bringing a coat to the coast? You have the island and its locals all to yourself. Plus, lodging rates will be at their lowest.
