Conservatorium visitors praise this Amsterdam hotel for its superb location in Museum Square. Within walking distance, you'll find Vondelpark and many of the city's museums, including the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum. Travelers also rave about the property's design. Though the Conservatorium's exterior reflects the building's 19th-century roots, inside, the property boasts modern facilities like a glass-enclosed atrium and a nearly 11,000-square-foot wellness center. The Dylan Amsterdam
    Amsterdam
#3 in Best Hotels in Amsterdam
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 719 reviewsTripAdvisor (719)
    Free WiFi

The Dylan hotel is conveniently situated within Amsterdam's central canal belt near the chic Nine Little Streets shopping area and several museums. Housed in a building that dates back to the 1600s, the hotel sits on a site that once featured a theater. After the original structure burned down in 1772, the locale was used as an office for the Roman Catholic Church until it was renovated and reopened as a luxury boutique hotel in 1999. Inside, recent guests were pleased with the accommodations' decor, though some wished that all rooms were accessible from the hotel's elevators. Standard guest rooms offer Bose sound systems, garden or courtyard views, minibars, complimentary Wi-Fi access and hardwood floors. Those who upgrade to suites will find unique details like exposed beams, 20-foot ceilings, bronze chandeliers and cast-iron staircases. Past travelers recommended dining at the Michelin-starred Restaurant Vinkeles for French cuisine and visiting Bar Brasserie OCCO for signature cocktails and coffee.

This Waldorf Astoria is spread across six 17th-century Dutch palaces set along the Herengracht canal, one of the city's main thoroughfares that easily connects travelers to some of Amsterdam's top attractions, including the Van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark and Leidseplein. Rooms feature neutral but luxurious decor and plenty of amenities that left recent guests feeling spoiled. Bathroom televisions, feather bedding, in-room espresso machines, Salvatore Ferragamo toiletries, blackout curtains and complimentary high-speed internet come with every room, though canal views aren't guaranteed unless specifically requested. The hotel also boasts a swanky indoor pool, a spa, a private boat jetty and the largest private garden in the neighborhood, perfect for those looking to escape from the bustle. For dining, guests can choose from both fine and casual. Peacock Alley serves afternoon tea, Goldfinch Brasserie offers lunch, while Spectrum (formerly Librije Zusje) was recently opened by the hotel's two-Michelin-starred chef. Guests consistently praise this Intercontinental for its impeccable service, great amenities and historic, palatial interiors. Though it's a bit removed from the city in the Weesperzijde neighborhood, the hotel's address didn't seem to faze recent guests, who enjoyed the property's quiet atmosphere. Rooms here are pristine and classic, fitting in with the building's 19th-century roots. Along with antique furniture and French wallpaper, guests can expect to find stocked minibars, flat-screen TVs with DVD players, luxury bath amenities, Illy coffee makers and 24-hour room service. And here, dining is an attraction all its own. The hotel's signature restaurant, La Rive, gets high praise for its fine French-Mediterranean fare. The hotel also has a more casual spot, the Amstel Brasserie, a lounge and bar that serves lunch and dinner. Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht - a concept by Hyatt
    Amsterdam
#6 in Best Hotels in Amsterdam
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 2363 reviewsTripAdvisor (2363)

This Hyatt outpost stands out among travelers for its over-the-top style. The Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht features an eye-catching mix of classic and modern designs big and small throughout. Giant bell-shaped sculptures housing crystal chandeliers hang low from the lobby ceiling while rooms are adorned with contemporary details like Lucite headboards, above counter sinks and tall, wingback armchairs. Meanwhile, the on-site garden, with its black-and-white-tiled floors and quirky sculptures looks like something straight out of "Alice in Wonderland," and the Bluespoon restaurant, which serves European fare, actually uses blue spoons. The property's long list of amenities are just as impressive as its design savvy. The hotel provides a gym, spa services, in-room minibars, valet parking, an on-site library and guest bicycles. As far as location goes, Andaz Amsterdam is situated on the central Prinsengracht canal and is within walking distance of Leidseplein (the city's prime entertainment area), Vondelpark and the Anne Frank House.

Previous guests raved about the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam's historical charm and prime location in central Amsterdam. Original details – like stained-glass windows and carved wooden doors – from when the property housed two 15th-century convents are still evident, despite the hotel's contemporary interior. Bold colors and modern artwork and light fixtures can be found throughout the property's public spaces, guest rooms and suites. All accommodations are equipped with complimentary Wi-Fi, Nespresso coffee machines and walk-in rain showers, while specialty suites offer extra perks like in-room steam rooms and butler service. On-site dining options include The Flying Dutchman cafe and the Michelin-starred Bridges, where you can visit the restaurant for a multi-course meal or its BarBistro, which features a more casual all-day menu. Or, if you'd rather eat off-site, stroll around and you'll find a variety of restaurants and cafes. Perched on the banks of the Amstel Canal and nestled close to both Amsterdam's business and shopping districts, Hotel Okura Amsterdam is ideally located for both business and leisure travelers. What's more, foodies should take note that the hotel has a two-star Michelin restaurant, two one-star Michelin restaurants and a Bib Gourmand by Michelin restaurant on the premises. Ciel Bleu Restaurant (two Michelin stars) serves international cuisine paired with an award-winning wine list while Yamazato (one Michelin star) serves traditional Japanese cuisine. Additionally, the hotel's Teppanyaki Restaurant Sazanka is the first restaurant of its kind in Europe to receive a Michelin star. Guests can also visit the more casual Serre, which serves international cuisine and cocktails. Outside of the restaurants, guests will find the Japanese-style spa, Nagomi Spa & Health, along with several meeting spaces. Guest rooms and suites include complimentary Wi-Fi access, Nespresso coffee makers, a pillow menu, bathrobes and slippers, and bathrooms that feature a separate tub and rainfall shower. And while the staff, location and well-appointed rooms all received high praise from recent guests, the real standout amenities at this property are the Michelin-starred restaurants, though they are pricey.

TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 1241 reviewsTripAdvisor (1241)

What the Hotel Pulitzer lacks in amenities guests say it makes up for in stellar location and style. There is no spa or pool on-site, but with popular points of interest, including the Anne Frank House and the Nine Streets neighborhood nearby, guests likely won't need any extra on-site thrills to keep them entertained. The hotel is spread across 25 classic Dutch houses, most of which are situated along the canals. This translates to plenty of opportunities to view the picturesque waterways from the comfort of your own bed. Standard rooms achieve a look that is both contemporary and cozy, with natural wood headboards backed by exposed brick walls or vaulted ceilings, tufted velvet ottomans and colorful chaise lounges. Its chic boutique sensibility seamlessly carries into its outdoor spaces and restaurants. Guests loved the hotel's gardens, which sit comfortably between its many buildings, offering a quiet escape from the city. There are also three eateries on-site, including a hotel bar. Care to explore beyond the confines of the hotel? Consider signing up for a 75-minute canal tour in the hotel's own salon boat (not included in your room rate).

TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 1817 reviewsTripAdvisor (1817)

If you're the type of traveler who's looking for a little something extra during your hotel stay, then art'otel is your solution. But know that this hotel doesn't do little. What makes the art'otel so unique is that it's a big art gallery that happens to have hotel rooms, too. The property boasts an on-site art curator, a 3,000-square-foot art gallery with temporary exhibitions and a library that features art lectures and publications, as well as events and workshops. While the hotel is decorated to the nines with art, rooms are subdued but stylish, with contemporary furnishings, flat-screen TVs, unique art and Wi-Fi access. The hotel also comes equipped with various health facilities including a gym, a pool, a beauty salon and a large Finnish sauna. Then there's 5&33, touted as a social venue where you can find the art'otel's on-site restaurant and bar in addition to the library and art gallery. Guests in particular lauded the quality of the complimentary breakfast, but what they really appreciated was the hotel's location. Though slightly removed from top attractions, art'otel's address near the city’s center is well connected: The city's train station, a metro station, tram station, bus station and ferry docks are all within walking distance of the hotel.

It doesn't take long for guests to find that the "grand" part of this hotel truly lives up to its name. The property's striking facade towers over the Waalseilandsgracht canal. Though recent guests said the hotel's location along the canal provided a beautiful setting, reviewers also said the property was a bit far from top attractions. Despite this, guests still offered rave reviews for the hotel, noting that its classic interiors are magnificent, especially the property's various stained-glass works. Plus, no two rooms are exactly the same. What all accommodations do have, however, are complimentary stocked minibars, Nespresso coffee machines and free in-room internet. Outside of the rooms, visitors will find a bevy of facilities, including a small swimming pool, a fitness center and three saunas of varying temperatures. There is also an on-site restaurant, The Seven Seas, which serves Dutch fare for dinner. For lighter meals, guests can check out the lounge, which also serves coffee and drinks. The only gripe among recent lodgers: service can be inconsistent throughout the hotel.

Neighborhoods in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a web of canals – the city itself is about 20 percent water – which can pose difficult to maneuver. At the center of the city is an area called Centrum, in which the Royal Palace of Amsterdam rises as if to orient tourists. The verdant Canal Belt area – which refers to the Herengracht, the Keizersgracht and the Prinsengracht canals, as well as the thin stretches of land found amongst them – forms a half-circle around Centrum. To the southwest, you'll find Museumplein and farther south De Pijp. Jordaan lies to the west and Jodenbuurt and Plantage to the east.
