Whiteface Lodge exudes a warm, cozy atmosphere. Exposed wood beams, pine dining chairs, granite hearths, mounted animal heads and chandeliers crafted out of deer antlers deck the lodge. And the list of rustic touches goes on and on. Families flock to Whiteface for the mélange of kid-friendly entertainment, including a 56-seat surround-sound movie theater, a 10-pin bowling alley and a game room chock-full of foosball and air hockey tables. And the inviting accommodations are a big hit, too, thanks to amenities like full kitchens and European-style laundry units. Recent travelers also appreciate the suites' Adirondack-style accents, custom-designed pillows and private balconies overlooking the surrounding mountain landscape. The culinary offerings available at KANU dining room and lounge, as well as the shakes and swirls available at the Old Fashion Ice Cream Parlor, receive high praise from previous visitors as well, though others caution that high-season rates are pricey.

Overlooking Lake Placid's main street from a hilltop perch, the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa has been an Adirondack mainstay since 1883. The resort is filled with exposed wooden beams and cozy fireplaces reminiscent of the lodges of yesteryear, but Mirror Lake is still catching up to the times. Accommodations are outfitted with wooden furniture, vaulted ceilings and expansive windows that offer views of Mirror Lake and the surrounding mountains – and recent visitors say the panoramas are stunning. However, those looking to stay connected to the world bemoaned having to pay extra for Wi-Fi access. When it's time for some R&R outside your digs, head to the spa for a massage or body scrub, or take a dip in the hot tub. Aside from its location and ample on-site amenities, travelers also praise the delectable culinary offerings available at The View, Taste Bistro & Bar and The Cottage.

Perched on Green Island in Bolton Landing, New York, The Sagamore caters to families with its plentiful lodging options. The resort features 137 classic guest rooms and suites that can be found in the Historic Hotel, while more affordable rooms and suites are tucked in The Lodges. Then there are The Hermitage and Wapanak Castle, two distinct buildings usually rented out to families as well as large groups. Recent guests recommend kid-friendly amenities like the seasonal kids club and The Rec, an all-ages activity center with Nintendo Wii and Xbox stations, arcade games and even an indoor mini-golf course. And the Lake George waterfront activities – like kayaking, canoeing and fishing – are popular pastimes, as well. After participating in outdoor pursuits, you can retreat to one of the resort's eight on-site eateries. Although recent guests concede the meals here are pricey, they say they're well worth the cost, citing top-notch service and delicious bites. While past visitors loved the ample on-site activities, many noted that the rooms are in need of a facelift.

According to some recent guests, this resort-casino megaplex – run by the Oneida American Indian tribe – easily rivals some of the sprawling properties in Las Vegas. Rather than in Vegas, you'll find Turning Stone in Verona, New York, on Patrick Road, just off of State Route 365. The casino has plenty of gaming options (penny slots, blackjack and Texas Hold'em, to name a few), and there are even more amenities, such as a full-service spa and multiple dining venues, to keep you occupied. The Lodge offers suites, which come appointed with soaking tubs, glass-enclosed showers and floor-to-ceiling windows, to note a few amenities. But while most previous visitors report a satisfactory stay overall, some do lament that the prices of drinks and meals here are a bit hard to swallow.

    4.0-star Hotel Class
Sitting approximately 100 miles northwest of New York City in the Catskills region, YO1 Wellness Resort and Spa offers a great weekend getaway for travelers looking for a personalized approach to relaxation. Instead of booking each individual treatment, guests select one of several "wellness pathways" that are best suited to their needs, whether they want to alleviate pain, manage stress or rejuvenate their body. Each program includes yoga practices, acupuncture, ayurveda therapies and naturopathy techniques tailored to the individual. Additional on-site amenities include a tea cafe, a juice bar, outdoor walking trails and a fitness center. After a day of pampering, retire to your elegantly appointed room, which features neutral tones, hypoallergenic bedding, complimentary Wi-Fi, pillow-top beds, and Codage bath amenities. When you're ready to eat, YO1's on-site dining room serves locally sourced organic fare that has roots in ayurveda, naturopathy and raw food diets. These luxuries come at a cost (wellness packages start at $799 per night for a minimum three-night stay), but the fee is all-inclusive. While most guests praise the resort for its tranquil atmosphere, spotless rooms and fantastic spa facilities, a few previous guests complain the staff is disorganized.

    • Free WiFi

The Doral Arrowwood receives mixed reviews from recent guests. While some praise the locale (it's just a few miles from the Westchester Airport) and the pristine nine-hole golf course, others say the property could greatly benefit from a facelift. Still, others applaud the spacious accommodations, decked out in warm yellow and beige hues and decorated with large desks, sumptuous bedding and lavish bath amenities. Those who hosted an event here, such as a wedding or large conference, were particularly pleased with the comfy rooms, the staff's attention to detail in organization and planning and the on-site golf course. After hitting the links, you can unwind at one of the on-site dining venues, which recent patrons praise for both top-notch entrees and service. Just a note of caution: Bring sturdy walking shoes. Visitors say the parking lot sits far removed from the accommodations, so you'll be much happier sporting comfortable shoes for the long trek back to your digs. You'll find the Doral Arrowwood on Anderson Hill Road in Rye Brook, New York.

    4.0-star Hotel Class
    $42 Nightly Resort Fee
The Kartrite Resort and Indoor Waterpark's main draws are its family-friendly activities and its proximity to New York City (95 miles northwest), which makes the property a convenient weekend trip for city-dwellers. The indoor waterpark keeps its waters at a comfortable 82 degrees and features huge slides, a rope bridge, a lazy river and downhill water races. However, some guests say the waterpark is smaller compared to the ones at similar nearby resorts. When kids are done with water-based fun, they can head to one of the resort's other on-site attractions, such as miniature bowling, laser tag or the ropes course. (Note: Most of these activities have an additional fee). Parents appreciate the on-site Chill Spa – which offers massages, facials and other relaxing services – the fitness center and the several on-site bars. Kartrite's on-site restaurants include breakfast and dinner buffet Eat. Eat. Eat. as well as Surfside Grill, which dishes up classics like pizza and chicken tenders poolside. The property boasts all-suite accommodations that range from studios to three-bedroom options with modern finishes and bold color accents. All rooms come equipped with flat-screen TVs, Bluetooth-enabled alarm clocks, minifridges and sleeper sofas. Extras like Wi-Fi, self-service laundry facilities and in-room coffee, are covered by the resort's $42 nightly resort fee.

The Gideon Putnam resort has served as an upstate New York hideaway for more than 75 years. Tucked inside Saratoga Spa State Park in Saratoga Springs, the property is chock-full of outdoor activities: Cross-country skiing is popular in the winter and hiking takes over in the warmer months. And then there's the legendary Roosevelt Baths & Spa, a popular R&R hot spot since the 1930s. In keeping with the renowned regional pastime (mineral baths have drawn visitors to Saratoga Springs since the mid-1800s), the spa features cold and warm mineral water treatments as well as massage services. Recent guests suggest exploring the grounds before retiring to the high-end accommodations, which feature calming neutral tones and upscale amenities, such as plush bedding and lavish bath products. In addition to the luxurious accommodations, recent visitors praise the courteous and helpful hotel staff. The only downside, according to a few previous visitors, is that the rooms are a bit outdated and could use a facelift. Still, despite this minor drawback, recent guests report a pleasant experience overall.
