Looking to escape the stresses of daily life, unwind and sample some excellent vino? Carter Estate Winery and Resort is an all-encompassing wine retreat in southern California that encourages just that. Set about 65 miles north of San Diego, the property offers 42 suites outfitted in rich blues, chocolate browns and crisp white decor. Accommodations are equipped with minifridges; televisions; electric fireplaces and sitting areas; and bathrooms with a soaking tub and separate shower. Those looking for some pampering can schedule a spa service to enjoy at the resort's sister property, South Coast Winery Resort & Spa. The pool is a standout feature of the Carter Estate: it's surrounded by cabanas, lounge chairs and umbrellas, and there's a hot tub on the pool deck, too. The resort offers upscale in-room dining for breakfast (included in the cost of your stay), lunch and dinner, and select meals can be enjoyed outdoors. And then there's the wine. The resort sits on 112 acres of vineyards and produces a smattering of wine varieties, including chardonnay, viognier, pinot noir and malbec. Guests can enjoy wine tastings and food and wine pairing tours on-site. Overall, visitors had nothing but praise for this winery-resort hybrid, citing its secluded grounds and spacious rooms as highlights.

Located in Temecula, California — about 60 miles north of San Diego — the Pechanga Resort & Casino draws visitors with its primary feature: more than 180,000 square feet of gambling space and a wide variety of ways to test Lady Luck. But according to recent guests, that's not the only reason to make the trek to Pechanga. The resort also houses non-gambling activities such as the beautiful golf course and the spa, which offers everything from facials to full-body massages. Should you be in the mood for kicking back, take advantage of the pool, or book a Jacuzzi studio for access to your own private hot tub. Even if you don't splurge on a suite, you'll find your accommodations comfortably appointed with custom-made Italian furniture, flat-screen TVs, fully-stocked minibars and floor-to-ceiling windows. Recent visitors are full of praise for Pechanga's rooms and customer service, noting the staff members are friendly and professional, though some found the food on-site to be just ok.

Set in Temecula wine country (about 65 miles north of San Diego and 90 miles southeast of Los Angeles), the South Coast Winery Resort & Spa's suites and villas are situated amid the vineyard's vines. With cozy hearths, spa tubs, balconies and no shared walls, South Coast Winery makes an ideal choice for couples looking for a secluded, peaceful escape. But it's not only the spacious accommodations that earn a thumbs-up from previous visitors: Guests who visit GrapeSeed Spa raise their (complimentary) glasses of wine to its heated saltwater pool and extensive treatment menu. The Vineyard Rose Restaurant also receives high praise for its gourmet seafood entrees and view of the gardens (ask for a table on the patio), though some recent visitors were not impressed with the restaurant's service.
