This resort can be found about 46 miles west of Washington, D.C., in Middleburg, Virginia, but with its acres of rolling fields and relaxed atmosphere, it feels like it's worlds away from the hectic capital. Travelers love the colonial decor, complete with hardwood floors, plantation-style architecture and traditional design accents. Guest rooms are spacious and come equipped with flat-panel TVs, minibars and excellent views. Salamander Resort & Spa also features an expansive equestrian facility, allowing guests to test their horseback riding skills (for an additional fee). For something more relaxing, make an appointment at the Salamander Spa, which also houses an infinity pool and a fitness center. Lastly, finish off your day at Harrimans, which earns praise from guests for its locally sourced cuisine. Some caution, though, that service provided throughout the property is disappointing.

Golfers love this James River-adjacent resort for its stunning three courses (River, Plantation, and Woods), but you don't have to be a putter to enjoy the gorgeous grounds. The 425 villa-style rooms and suites on site aren't as well-stocked as you might expect in a luxury hotel, but still they're clean and comfortable, and include either a private balcony or patio. But that's not what keeps guests coming back year after year. Previous visitors can't stop raving about the sophisticated hotel ambience and gracious hotel staff. Plus, Kingsmill Resort sits next to a full-service marina and offers water sports opportunities like Jet Ski or pontoon boat rentals. If that doesn't sell you, perhaps the tranquil Spa at Kingsmill or four on-site dining venues will. Families also praise Kingsmill for offering complimentary shuttle service to Colonial Williamsburg as well as Busch Gardens and Water Country USA parks.

Recent guests adore Boar's Head's charming setting and hospitable staff. But when it comes to the property itself, they offer a few words of advice. One, if you want the best room available, inquire about the handful of lake view rooms in the Main Inn. (There are six buildings with rooms, the largest of which is the Ednam Hall structure.) Two, to secure one of those lake view rooms, you should book several weeks or months in advance. These desirable guest rooms feature luxurious amenities, such as antique furnishings, coffee makers, high-end bath products and plush bedding. And three, expect to find some areas of the property grounds that could use a facelift. What did impress guests, though, is Boar's Head's plethora of on-site activities, including a fitness club and three swimming pools. After swimming a few laps, indulge in a delicious meal at the recently remodeled Mill Room, or for more casual fare, head to Racquets Restaurant. Two additional seasonal eateries, the Deep End Bar & Grill and the golf course's Birdwood Grill, are also available for food. You'll find Boar's Head located about 5 miles from the historic Downtown Pedestrian Mall in Charlottesville, Virginia.

But recent visitors also praise this resort's first-class hospitality staff. Accommodations here are appointed with deluxe amenities like 42-inch flat-screen TVs, feather beds and down pillows and in some rooms, working fireplaces. Another benefit to a stay at this Omni is the array of on-site activities available; some of the most popular include the resort's movie theater, fitness center and Cascades golf course. Previous visitors also recommend checking out the spa, which features mineral-rich hot spring waters and specialty treatments. What's more, you'll have six eateries to choose from during your stay.

Families and couples particularly praise the Tides Inn's quaint setting (perched on a marina in the Chesapeake Bay area of Virginia). But they also have good things to say about the resort's eclectic array of activities, which include sailing courses and loaner bikes, canoes and paddleboards. Plus, there's an outdoor pool and the Golden Eagle Golf Club. Previous visitors also praise the accommodations, which come with Egyptian cotton linens, minibars, complimentary Wi-Fi access and marble and mahogany bathrooms with deep soaking tubs. Though some guests do complain that the dining is just subpar given its high cost, others report a satisfactory dining experience throughout the resort's five eateries.

Families also praise Wintergreen's versatile array of kid-friendly activities, from zip lining and fly fishing to snowshoeing and snow tubing. Previous visitors delight in the cuisine, particularly the zesty American fare served at the Stoney Creek Bar & Grill. There are also three additional on-site eateries to choose from. If the looks are any indication of this Preferred Legend resort's excellence, we're sold. Lush grounds surrounded by Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, architecture inspired by the best Tuscan designs and guest rooms resplendent with soft fabrics and sophisticated furniture are all indicative of the luxury found at Keswick Hall & Golf Club. Recent guests were pleased with this resort's intimate feel (with only 48 rooms, Keswick has a commendable staff-to-guest ratio). Be sure to grab a snack at Villa Crawford, eat dinner at Fossett's restaurant and enjoy a nightcap at Villa Crawford Bar. All three options fare well with recent patrons, but some guests did report hiccups with service for large groups. For a more casual dining experience, retreat to the Club Grill, which also receives two thumbs up from past lodgers. When planning your trip, however, you should keep in mind that this property is located approximately 9 miles east of Charlottesville, Virginia.
