Although several reviewers said this pricey MGM Resorts outpost – which sits 11 miles south of Washington, D.C., in Oxon Hill, Maryland – pales in comparison to Las Vegas' casinos, many appreciated its close proximity to the National Harbor entertainment complex, as well as its variety of shops and restaurants. Dining options range from a Shake Shack to an upscale food court to celebrity chef-affiliated locales like Fish by José Andrés and Voltaggio Brothers Steak House. But MGM National Harbor offers more than just top-notch eateries. Travelers can catch a live performance in the 3,000-seat theater, admire the conservatory's themed floral arrangements or go for a dip in the outdoor swimming pool. Other available facilities include a 27,000-square-foot spa and three bars and lounges. When it's time to retire for the evening, the resort has 308 guest rooms and suites to choose from. All feature neutral color schemes and come equipped with LCD televisions, Serta pillow-top mattresses and minibars. Plus, the property's $23.59 daily resort fee covers high-speed internet access.

Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center

#3 in Best Resorts in Washington, D.C.

The Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center is a destination unto itself. Overlooking the Potomac River from the National Harbor (located in Maryland about 10 miles south of Washington, D.C.), this massive property is not ideal for sightseers. However, with its full-service Relâche Spa & Salon, 24-hour fitness center, multiple dining options and on-site shopping complex, you might be hard-pressed to find a reason to leave. The Gaylord also boasts a wide selection of family-friendly amenities, including a pool and a nightly fountain show, plus the National Children's Museum is a short walk away. When night falls, you and your clan can cozy up in spacious accommodations, appointed with custom furnishings, minifridges, flat-screen TVs and pillow-top mattresses. Though most guests report a satisfactory stay here, some do complain of exorbitant fees. On the plus side, if you take part in Marriott's rewards program, you may earn or redeem points by choosing to stay here.
