Nestled on the shore just steps from Newport's popular Cliff Walk, The Chanler's strongest feature is its breathtaking scenery. But there are plenty more compelling reasons to stay here. For one, the rooms are designed and named for royalty – the Louis XIV and the English Tudor suites are among the most dramatic. Despite its regal decor, each comes appointed with modern amenities like Fresh bath products, free Wi-Fi access, wet bars, heated bathroom floors and DVD players. Recent guests praise the hotel's easy access to the picturesque Cliff Walk and tasty cuisine served at Cara, the crown jewel of the property's three dining venues. The Chanler's attentive staff and romantic, tranquil setting also wins over visitors. Though a stay at the hotel will surely thin out your wallet, previous visitors say the indulgence is well worth the cost.

Once a summer "cottage" to a wealthy scientist and explorer, Castle Hill Inn is now one of the most exclusive collections of accommodations in Newport. The Inn and surrounding beach cottages are decorated with an aristocratic charm typical of the seaport's mansions, with perks like a private beach and complimentary breakfast and afternoon tea. Cottages feature cool blue, green and yellow tones reflective of the natural seaside setting and come furnished with high-end amenities, like plush linens and rainfall shower heads. But what continually wins over guests are the scenes of Narragansett Bay and the surrounding coastline. Recent visitors say the vistas are best enjoyed from the Inn's Adirondack chairs perched on the lawn. Previous guests also rave about the delectable cuisine served at The Dining Room. The only potential drawback lies in the location. The Castle Hill Inn sits about 5 miles outside of town, so you'll need a car if you're planning lots of sightseeing. On the upside, if you are a member of Relais & Châteaux's Club 5C, you're eligible for free perks, such as complimentary room upgrades.

Guest rooms and suites include flat-screen TVs, kitchenettes and complimentary Wi-Fi. (Some rooms also feature fireplaces.) Over the course of its long life, the property has seen the addition of pools, a gym and the acclaimed Vanderbilt Spa, which visitors love for its soothing atmosphere and relaxing treatments. This modern boutique hotel is a bit of a maverick when compared to the other traditional New England properties around town. Accommodations here are high-tech, with iPod-integrated media systems and in-room iPads that download complimentary newspapers for guests every day. Plus, guests here are pampered with standard luxurious amenities too, like Frette bedding, MALIN+GOETZ bath products and gas fireplaces. The LEED-certified hotel is also eco-conscious, with low-flow shower heads and LED and CFL light bulbs in the light fixtures. But there's a pinch of classic Newport to the Forty 1° North formula, too; the private marina is available for the visitors with their yacht in tow. Most recent guests rave about the boutique's energetic, young vibe, and praise the outstanding service. Previous visitors also compliment Forty 1° North's two on-site dining venues; however, some do caution the entree costs are a tad expensive. The hotel's downtown location on Thames Street is also a crowd-pleaser.

    Newport, RI
    0.4 miles to city center
#6 in Best Hotels in Newport
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4 based on 2508 reviewsTripAdvisor (2508)
Just steps away from Newport's scenic harbor, Hotel Viking exudes a sense of Old World charm, combining period decor with luxurious accents like Egyptian-cotton bed linens and satin duvets. But this hotel isn't stuck in the past: Each room includes an LCD TV and complimentary Wi-Fi (included in the daily resort fee). Despite their high opinions of the room design, guests do warn that this hotel can be noisy. Hotel Viking wows with the award-winning wine lists and delectable bites offered at its premier restaurant, One Bellevue, not to mention the replenishing Newport-inspired spa treatments at SpaFjör.
