    Fogo Island Inn

Fogo Island Inn isn't your average hotel. The inn, which is held up by stilts so as not to damage the rocky topography it sits on, features a contemporary, almost futuristic architectural design that seems at odds with the centuries-old fishing village it occupies. Because of the inn's remote location on Fogo Island (situated off the northeast coast of Newfoundland, Canada), the property cultivates a familial, intimate atmosphere that recent guests loved. You won't find much in the surrounding area, but the inn provides all the unique amenities you could need for a relaxing, secluded getaway. In addition to a fitness center, the Fogo Island Inn offers a rooftop deck with wood-fired saunas and two outdoor hot tubs, a 37-seat theater, a small art gallery, a library, a lounge and bar and a restaurant with vaulted ceilings and dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows. Aside from the amenities, it was the inn's 29 suites that really impressed visitors, who called a stay at the property a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience. Rooms are outfitted with floor-to-ceiling windows (perfect for admiring the ocean views), natural wood floors with in-floor heating, heated towel racks and heated toilet seats with a built-in bidet, among other amenities. The only gripe among lodgers? A stay here does not come cheap.

For "breathtaking" views and "exceptional" customer service, travelers recommend staying at The Algonquin Resort St. Andrews by-the-Sea. Located by the American-Canadian border and approximately 63 miles southwest of Saint John, New Brunswick, this Autograph Collection outpost has welcomed guests since opening as Canada's first seaside resort in 1889. After undergoing an extensive renovation in 2014, the resort now boasts facilities like a fitness center and an indoor pool with a waterslide. Other on-site amenities include a spa, an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and a 24-hour gift shop. Plus, area shuttle service, Wi-Fi access and loaner bicycles and tennis equipment are covered by all room rates, and Marriott Rewards members can earn or redeem points while staying here. Two eateries – one in the main building and another at the golf course – are available as well. Many past diners raved about Braxton's Restaurant & Bar's themed meals, which include a Sunday brunch buffet and the "Murder Mystery & Dinner" experience. Former lodgers also praised the resort's guest rooms and suites, where period decor, pillow-top mattresses and flat-screen TVs are provided. However, some said it's best to avoid main building rooms if you desire adequate space and thicker walls.

Kindred Spirits Country Inn & Cottages
    Cavendish, Northeast Provinces
#6 in Best Hotels in Northeast Provinces
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 493 reviewsTripAdvisor (493)

This 6-acre, family-run property in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, earns kudos from recent guests for its caring staff and unbeatable location. The inn sits less than a mile from the ocean, right next door to Green Gables, which was the inspiration for the popular "Anne of Green Gables" series. Along with the inn's setting, reviewers were also pleased with their accommodations, which are spread out between two buildings on the property: the Inn and the Gatehouse. Rooms are dressed in a country style (think: floral quilted bed covers, hardwood floors and wicker accent furniture) and feature TVs, DVD players and in some deluxe rooms, corner Jacuzzis and fireplaces. If you need a bit more space, consider reserving one of the inn's two- or three-bedroom cottages. Other on-site amenities include a playground, a seasonal outdoor pool and hot tub, a fitness room and bike rentals. There is no on-site restaurant, but breakfast is included in the room rate (except cottages).

For recent travelers, the Silver Dart Lodge provided a convenient home base for sightseeing on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island, and more specifically, the breathtaking Cabot Trail. You'll find the Silver Dart Lodge off the Trans-Canada Highway, overlooking the Bras d'Or Lakes. You can admire the scenic view from several points throughout the lodge, including at the private lakeside gazebo, the observation deck (which is equipped with binoculars), along the property's walking trails and from the floor-to-ceiling windows at the on-site restaurant, McCurdy's. Other on-site amenities include an outdoor heated pool, a playground, a fitness center, bicycles for guest use, a badminton net, a horseshoe pit and a gift shop selling indigenous Nova Scotian wares. Rooms, meanwhile, are spread across several different buildings and outfitted with TVs and free Wi-Fi; some are also equipped with sofa beds and shared or private patios. Reviewers were generally pleased with their accommodations, but some felt the walls were thin and let in too much outside noise. Lodgers were more satisfied with the hotel's staff, which they described as helpful and attentive.

Previous visitors don't mind the Fox Harb'r Resort's remote Wallace, Nova Scotia, location. In fact, many guests said the resort's scenic location and quiet ambiance are some of its greatest allures. Golfers can tee off on the Graham Cooke-designed championship course, while nature-seekers hike along scenic trails in the Wallace Bay National Wildlife Area Trail (about 8 miles southeast of the resort) or discover Nova Scotia by sea on a boating tour. Meanwhile, those looking for an extra dose of relaxation can indulge in a replenishing massage or lounge by the resort's mineral pool and hot tub. Afterward, retreat to your well-appointed accommodations, which are outfitted with kitchennettes, heated granite bathroom floors, Molton Brown bath products and terraces or balconies. However, some visitors were not satisfied with the cuisine served at The Great Room, describing it as unimaginative and overpriced.

This Marriott outpost boasts a prime location on Halifax Harbour, within close proximity to the waterfront's bars, restaurants and shopping venues. Guests also praise this Marriott's proximity to the Casino Nova Scotia, which is connected to the hotel via an indoor skyway. Inside the hotel, the refurbished lobby wins guests over with its sleek, modern decor. The hotel's guest rooms and suites, on the other hand, seem to still need an update – travelers describe the rooms' brown and red color schemes as drab compared to the bright white furnishings of the lobby. Each room features a minifridge, a 25-inch flat-screen TV and complimentary Internet access. As for dining, you can order room service from the on-site restaurant, the harbourstone sea grill & pour house or venture to the nearby eateries located on the waterfront.
