Located a little less than 3 miles north of campus, The Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center is a great option for those that want to be close to campus, but not directly in the center of the action. Each room comes with a minifridge, complimentary Wi-Fi access and a flat-screen television, though several recent guests wished the hotel would be more flexible about late checkout. The two on-site restaurants are The Gardens, which serves casual breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Legends, which serves fine dining fare. For those looking to break a sweat, the hotel offers a fitness center with an indoor heated pool. And if you want to take your workout outside, you have plenty of nearby hiking and biking trails. The Atherton Hotel
    State College, PA
    Free WiFi

In downtown State College, Pennsylvania, and just a few blocks southwest of The State Theater and Old Main Lawn on Penn State University’s campus, The Atherton Hotel has been a popular place to stay since it opened. Features include a lobby chandelier and grand piano, and – in some rooms – four-poster beds. The 149 guest rooms and suites are neutral with green and orange accents, and all have complimentary Wi-Fi (a new Wi-Fi system was installed in 2018) and flat-screen TVs. Many have microwaves and coffee and tea makers. There’s a small, modern fitness center, complimentary newspapers and shoe-shine services, plus a billiards table, but no pool. There is a daily charge for on-site parking. Some recent guests complained of dated rooms, and inflated pricing around popular campus activities, especially graduation. There are two on-site restaurants – in addition to the abundance of walkable dining options in downtown State College – Tarragon serves continental and hot a la carte breakfasts, as well as sandwiches, steaks, seafood and pasta for dinner daily; and the speak-easy-style Rumors Lounge, festooned with an elaborate mural of famous faces, serves soup, salad, bar food and crab legs (Fridays only) for lunch. Guests can earn and redeem Choice Privileges points while staying at this property.

  • Hyatt Place State College is a relatively new addition (opened April 2017) to State College’s downtown area. A short walk from the Old Main Lawn, this 165-room and pet-friendly property is in the heart of Penn State’s campus and in a mixed-use development that also features a popular area restaurant and a Target store. Four room categories all feature minifridges, coffee makers, complimentary Wi-Fi and separate workspaces. Daily hot breakfast is included, and there’s a grab-and-go spot for prepared meals as well as a bar that serves Starbucks coffee by day and cocktails by night. There’s also a 24-hour fitness center with LCD touch-screen equipment. The lobby features local art and common-use computers, and there is remote printing available from anywhere on the property. There is a fee for on-site parking. Some guests note that check in – on the second floor – is confusing to locate, while others appreciated the friendly customer service. World of Hyatt points at this location.
