As one of the most decorated hotels in Virginia, The Inn at Little Washington has a lot to live up to. But by most traveler reports, The Inn exceeds expectations. This intimate Relais & Châteaux property receives continual praise for its romantic atmosphere, exceptional service and top-notch accommodations (some include imported furnishings from Europe, four-poster beds, wood-burning fireplaces, hand-painted tiles and private balconies, among other features). Previous visitors also rave about the The Inn's popular cuisine (served under the tutelage of the proprietor and head chef, Patrick O'Connell). There is one drawback, however: Staying at The Inn comes attached to a hefty price tag. Also, keep in mind that accommodations aren't available on Tuesdays. You'll have to save your pennies to enjoy all that this Blue Ridge Mountain-adjacent property provides. If you're invited into Relais & Châteaux's prestigious Club 5C, you're eligible for free perks by choosing to stay here.

First accepting guests in 1895, The Jefferson Hotel is an award winner several times over: Travel experts find what real-life travelers uphold, which is that The Jefferson Hotel's design, furnishings and staff exude Southern charm. Recent visitors rave about the spacious rooms, each appointed with deluxe amenities like custom bedding, Molton Brown bath products and Nespresso coffee makers. TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 2031 reviewsTripAdvisor (2031)

Golfers love this James River-adjacent resort for its stunning three courses (River, Plantation, and Woods), but you don't have to be a putter to enjoy the gorgeous grounds. The 425 villa-style rooms and suites on site aren't as well-stocked as you might expect in a luxury hotel, but still they're clean and comfortable, and include either a private balcony or patio. But that's not what keeps guests coming back year after year. Previous visitors can't stop raving about the sophisticated hotel ambience and gracious hotel staff. Plus, Kingsmill Resort sits next to a full-service marina and offers water sports opportunities like Jet Ski or pontoon boat rentals. If that doesn't sell you, perhaps the tranquil Spa at Kingsmill or five on-site dining venues will. Families also praise Kingsmill for offering complimentary shuttle service to Colonial Williamsburg as well as Busch Gardens and Water Country USA parks.

According to recent guests and locals, one of the best things about the boutique Quirk Hotel in Richmond, Virginia, is the large selection of locally made wine and craft beers, plus handcrafted cocktails at the hotel bar. If you're not a drinker, the on-site coffee bar, which brews beans from a local roasting company, is equally as popular. Located among the downtown arts and design district along Broad Street, the hotel is described by recent visitors as eccentric – in a good way – with a chic design and well-thought-out details.
