TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 333 reviewsTripAdvisor (333)
Housed in the historic R.J. Reynolds building in downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina, The Kimpton Cardinal Hotel radiates art deco charm. Originally built in 1929, the structure served as inspiration for New York's Empire State Building and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the 210-room hotel occupies six of the building's 22 floors and impresses guests with historical touches and modern amenities. Visitors were particularly pleased with the recreation center in the building's former boiler room. The area features an indoor basketball court, a two-lane bowling alley, billiards, pingpong tables and a slide. Travelers also applaud the on-site restaurant, The Katharine, for its French-inspired cuisine and Southern hospitality. When it's time to bed down, accommodations feature a mix of classic lines and contemporary touches. Standard amenities include minibars, flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi access (for IHG Rewards Club members) and in-room yoga mats, as well as bathrooms with walk-in showers. Plus extra amenities, like evening wine hours and pet-friendly accommodations, are also staples here.

Graylyn Estate looks more like a stone castle than a hotel and guests say a stay here is an enchanting experience. Previous visitors said everything from room decor to the complimentary breakfast buffet to the impeccable service made their stays memorable. Set on 55 acres in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, just south of Wake Forest University, Graylyn Estate houses 86 rooms across a few different buildings and cottages, and all of the accommodations are decorated a bit differently. Some rooms come equipped with ornamental fireplaces and 17-head showers while others feature hand-painted tile marble tubs and spacious sitting areas. The estate is also home to ample on-site conference facilities and offerings, including a conference center, catering options and team-building opportunities. As far as other amenities go, the property features a seasonal outdoor pool, two fitness centers and two restaurants (one of which offers a four-course dinner nightly). The only thing some previous patrons were disappointed with was that it seemed this hotel caters highly to meetings and weddings, meaning its grounds were often busy.
