Palace Hotel, A Luxury Collection Hotel, San Francisco
    San Francisco, CA
    0.5 miles to city center
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 1811 reviewsTripAdvisor (1811)
The Palace Hotel first welcomed guests in 1875 as the world's largest and most luxurious hotel. But the earthquake of 1906 destroyed the property; the building that stands now was constructed in 1909. Still, the Palace wins guests over with its historical charm: The lobby draws attention with marble floors and high ceilings, and the guest rooms house more contemporary furnishings (alongside amenities such as high-speed internet access). But to truly experience the Palace in all its timeless glory, sit down to afternoon tea underneath the glass ceiling and crystal chandeliers of the Garden Court. (For dinner, head to the Pied Piper Restaurant, which serves traditional American fare.) There's also a pool and fitness center on-site, which is perfect for those looking to recharge. Guests love the luxurious interiors and appreciate the cozy guest rooms. The staff also get a thumbs up as well for their warm, welcoming attitudes. What's more, as a member of the Luxury Collection hotel family, the Palace gladly welcomes guests looking to pay with or earn rewards through the Marriott Bonvoy program.

    Sunset Marquis Villa + Suites
    West Hollywood, CA
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 633 reviewsTripAdvisor (633)
Many of Los Angeles' hotels celebrate the city's showbiz heritage. The Sunset Marquis specializes in catering to those in the music industry. Billy Idol, Chaka Khan, George Clinton, Ozzy Osbourne, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more have cut a track or two in the on-site NightBird Recording Studios. They then stayed after hours to chill at Bar 1200, which serves a long list of trendy cocktails. Recent guests aren't swayed by celebrity but rather by the ultra-cozy beds in the villas and suites, which also feature rainforest showers, minibars, flat-screen TVs and high-speed internet access (for a fee). And when you're not rocking out or hitting the hay, spend some time by one of the hotel's two heated pools or sample the small plate offerings at catavina restaurant. Taj Campton Place San Francisco
    San Francisco, CA
    0.6 miles to city center
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 1437 reviewsTripAdvisor (1437)
Sitting about a block northeast of Union Square, Taj Campton Place San Francisco bills itself as "one of San Francisco's most prominent landmarks," and it has welcomed guests for more than 100 years. However, those who visited recently aren't quite sure what to make of this historic 110-room property. Travelers are quick to praise Taj Campton Place's location at the heart of the city, saying that getting to and from major attractions was a piece of cake. On the other hand, some guests claim that Taj Campton Place is starting to show its age, especially in the guest rooms. Although each accommodation comes equipped with amenities like flat-screen LCD televisions, Bose Wave sound systems and Nespresso machines, visitors say that the beige and white decor feels tired. If you're not happy with your room's appearance, head to the open-air fitness center to take in the city views, or seek out a change of scenery and some fine California cuisine at the Michelin-starred Campton Place Restaurant.

    Omni San Francisco Hotel
    San Francisco, CA
    0.3 miles to city center
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 5968 reviewsTripAdvisor (5968)
Housed in a former bank building that dates back to the 1920s, the Omni San Francisco Hotel has held on to aspects of its history: The lobby impresses guests with crystal chandeliers, wood paneling and a marble staircase. But the Omni's 362 rooms and suites are also lavish, as they are outfitted in warm red, gold and brown hues, and accommodations include amenities such as flat-screen TVs and iHome docking stations. The majority of travelers who choose to stay at this Omni property leave feeling more than satisfied. The hotel's location at the intersection of Chinatown and the Financial District is a huge selling point, while the competitive room rates pleased guests who like a good value (though parking and Wi-Fi access costs extra). Visitors are also quick to praise the prime cuts served up at Bob's Steak & Chop House.

    The Garland
    North Hollywood, CA
    8.1 miles to city center
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 3567 reviewsTripAdvisor (3567)
True to its North Hollywood location, this 7-acre boutique property embodies a retro-cool atmosphere that will transport you back to the glamour of 1970s L.A. Though the hotel completed a $20 million makeover in 2015, it didn't abandon its past: Rooms are a nod to the hotel's '70s roots with bright orange accents and vintage-inspired furniture, but they're also equipped with more modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi access and minifridges. When you're not in your room, take time to explore the rest of the property. The hotel offers complimentary activities for guests like its "Dive-In Move Night," where a classic film is screened poolside, plus a gift shop featuring locally sourced and California-inspired items (think California wines and specialty cookbooks). Even though you're within walking distance to a bevy of eateries, you'll want to stick around for at least one cocktail at the trendy Lobby Bar and a bite at The Front Yard, the hotel's on-site restaurant. When you want to explore off-property, The Garland's got you covered there, too: The hotel offers complimentary trolley service to Universal Studios and CityWalk, which made it a standout among its L.A. peers according to recent guests. Travelers also loved the laid-back ambiance of the property, with many saying it was an ideal honeymoon hideaway thanks to the comfortable rooms, unique public spaces and exceptional service.

InterContinental Los Angeles Century City at Beverly Hills

    7.9 miles to city center
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 2470 reviewsTripAdvisor (2470)
Like its Century City neighbor, the Hyatt Regency, the InterContinental Los Angeles Century City is a reasonably priced hotel. But this property has a few more luxurious, resort-like perks than its competition. Rooms here feature coffee makers, balconies, flat-screen TVs, and walk-in showers with soaking tubs. This impressive property houses a gym, outdoor infinity pool and full-service spa, not to mention plenty of meeting space. Guests praise the strong drinks and fresh sushi served up at the on-site restaurant, Mari. Unfortunately, parking was a pain for the InterContinental's recent guests: Visitors say you'll face exorbitant fees regardless of whether you choose to pay for valet service or self-parking ($46.20 per night). • As expected, kids are spellbound by the Disney brand enchantments, but adults are also delighted to stay in Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa because of its convenience. The resort's design draws on California's natural scenery – the redwood forests, the mountains, the rugged coast – but forgets none of the high-end musts of modern hotels. The rooms (that come in many configurations) can easily fit families, and the hotel provides additional sleeping bags for kids. The themed pools are a great way to enjoy the warm California weather as a clan, while weary parents can kick back in the Mandara Spa or enjoy a glass of wine at Napa Rose after a long day of fun. Families also enjoy the private entrance to certain areas of Disneyland, like Disney's California Adventure park and Downtown Disney District. The room rates, on the other hand, can take their toll on your vacation fun, though members of the Disney Vacation Club can receive discounts on both park admission and hotel rates.

Past guests particularly praise The Meritage Resort and Spa’s Crush Lounge, where guests can relish a drink while enjoying a game of bowling, shuffleboard or billiards. In fact, the array of on-site amenities almost overshadow the resort’s excellent location in Napa Valley, about 5 miles south of downtown Napa and slightly more than 3 miles from the Napa County Airport. The property boasts a smorgasbord of additional eateries, which range from Siena, a luxury restaurant with Californian- and Tuscan-inspired flavors, to The Village, a curated mix of wine tasting, grocery store, culinary classroom and event area. Not to mention Spa Terra, an actual wine cave where guests can enjoy a sip of their favorite grape-based beverage after candlelight yoga or a spa day.
