Pan American World Airways opened the first InterContinental hotel back in 1946, making it the world's oldest international hotel brand. Celebrities and dignitaries, such as Ava Gardener, Louis Armstrong, President Ronald Reagan and Britain's Prince William, have all been guests of InterContinental hotels. Because InterContinental properties (there are more than 180 of them across more than 60 countries) are individually owned, each exhibits its own distinct personality reflective of its location. What's more, many InterContinental hotels – such as The Willard InterContinental in Washington, D.C., and the InterContinental London Park Lane – are housed in historically significant buildings, which only adds to the ambiance. However, every InterContinental hotel adheres to the brand's standards, touting high-end amenities and fine dining establishments. Guests who frequently stay at InterContinental Hotels Group properties can sign up to earn free stays, transportation discounts and even guided tours through the IHG Rewards Club program. Many InterContinental properties have earned spots on our Best Hotels in the USA, Best Hotels in Mexico, Best Hotels in Europe and Best Hotels in Canada rankings. U.S. News-ranked InterContinental properties are listed below.

A member of the IHG Hotels family, this sprawling resort on Cozumel, Mexico's west coast promises island visitors a stylish, yet casual getaway. And according to previous guests, this InterContinental property delivers. Flanked by half a mile of sugary shoreline, swaying palm trees and the gargantuan Palancar Reef, the InterContinental Presidente Cozumel Resort & Spa houses 218 spacious guest rooms complete with eye-catching blue, green or yellow and orange accents, flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi access (which the $18 daily resort fee covers) and private balconies or terraces. Out on the grounds, visitors can swim in the outdoor pools, practice their backhand on the tennis courts or unwind at the spa. (For those traveling with kids in tow, be sure to spend some time looking for iguanas around the property.) Guests also praise the cuisine served at the resort's four dining venues, but most visitors credit their positive experiences here to the InterContinental Presidente Cozumel's employees. Previous travelers said that the resort's staff is nothing short of friendly and helpful. And keep in mind, guests with IHG Rewards Club memberships can use and earn points during their stays.

Housed in a former mansion belonging to a Spanish general, the InterContinental Presidente Merida Hotel stays true to its colonial heritage without sacrificing modern conveniences. Located in the Palacado Monteo district, this InterContinental property sits within walking distance of the bustling Paseo de Montejo Avenue, home to stately historic buildings, shops and restaurants. Guests give special kudos to the idyllic location, but recommend sticking around the hotel for the tasty plates and attentive waitstaff at Frutas y Flores. Travelers also favor the hotel's comforable guest rooms, which are outfitted with minibars, coffee makers, flat-screen TVs and your choice of city or interior terrace views (past visitors suggest opting for the city views). But while visitors compliment the spacious digs, they aren't as complimentary of the outdoor pool, which they say is too small to actually swim in. For extra perks, like room upgrades or free nights, cash in your IHG Rewards Club points or save them for a future stay.

While almost every property along Cancun's Hotel Zone has its own strip of shoreline, past guests praise this InterContinental resort's north-facing beach, saying the alabaster-hued sand is immaculate and rarely feels crowded. The pretty pool area with its white lounge chairs and blue umbrellas also garners rave reviews, as do the InterContinental Presidente Cancun Resort's three restaurants (though guests say that food and drinks can be a bit expensive). The property's guest rooms and suites come appointed in neutral tones and include satellite TVs, minibars and wireless internet access (for a fee). And for extra relaxation on your vacation, head to the resort's spa, which offers massages and reflexology treatments at its outdoor facilities. Plus, IHG Rewards Club members will enjoy extra perks, along with being able to earn and redeem points for choosing to stay at this spot.
