The Jefferson, Washington, DC has been catering to Washington's most elite visitors since 1923, providing a taste of European luxury in the heart of the United States capital. The Beaux-Arts era reigns supreme here, with early 20th century paintings and sculptures lining the checkered floors. The Jefferson's elegant accommodations are appointed with iPads, walk-in showers, flat-screen TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi access. (For a little more space, upgrade to a suite, which will come equipped with a coffee maker and, in some, balconies overlooking the Washington Monument.) Recent guests highly recommend making good use of the intimate on-site spa during your stay, and the in-house gourmet restaurants, Plume and The Greenhouse, earn particularly high praise, along with the on-site bar, Quill. Visitors also give props for The Jefferson's location, which is just a short walk from the National Mall.

    The Watergate Hotel
    Washington, DC
    1.4 miles to city center
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 806 reviewsTripAdvisor (806)
    Free WiFi

One of the most infamous hotels in the country has been restored to its former glory in the District of Columbia after a $125 million renovation. Blending modern details (decor is sleek and chic) while embracing its storied past (guest room key cards read "No need to break in"), the Watergate Hotel reopened in June 2016. The hotel is set in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood, putting guests close to shopping and dining in Georgetown; the monuments and museums that line the National Mall are also just 1 mile away. On-site, travelers have access to a 12,500-square-foot wellness center with spa services, an indoor pool and a fitness center. The property also boasts The Next Whisky Bar (a visitor favorite for its amber-hued wall of whiskey and extensive selection) and the Kingbird restaurant. But perhaps one of the best parts of this hotel is the Top of the Gate rooftop bar and lounge that offers sweeping views of the Potomac River and downtown Washington. Meanwhile, the hotel's 336 accommodations are outfitted in neutral tones of white, mocha and charcoal, and they feature flat-screen TVs, minibars and marble bathrooms. What's more, recent guests lauded the impeccable design and the friendly staff at this property, though a stay here is quite expensive.
