Cala de Mar Resort & Spa Ixtapa
    Ixtapa
    5-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 5 based on 745 reviewsTripAdvisor (745)

At this exclusive resort – located about 4 miles northwest of Ixtapa along Mexico's Pacific coast –traditional meets modern. Cala de Mar Resort & Spa Ixtapa's adobe-style clay exterior and thatched roofs are complemented by marble floors and hardwood furnishings. The hotel's mix of conventional and contemporary extends to its 54 accommodations, which feature authentic Mexican patterns coupled with top-notch conveniences like satellite TVs, complimentary wireless internet access and private plunge pools. For some visitors, the best part of the suites was the sense of privacy afforded by the rooms' spacious thatched terraces. Still, with the property's ample on-site amenities and gorgeous surroundings, you'll want to carve out some time to explore the rest of the resort's grounds. Start by soaking up the rays along one of two freshwater pools or by playing a round of chess in the library. Or to treat your senses, spend an afternoon at the spa getting pampered with a Xochitl-flower inflused treatment or lemongrass body wrap. (Bonus: The resort's infinity pools are some of the world's most beautiful.) And when hunger sets in, take your pick between four restaurants, dishing up everything from sushi and tapas to traditional enchiladas and ceviche. According to past guests, the food at all three dining spots is excellent and reasonably priced.

All-inclusive perks are abundant at this Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, property, ranging from unlimited alcoholic beverages and meals at one of three on-site restaurants (a few more are housed at the resort's neighboring sister property, Garza Blanca Preserve Resort & Spa, and are covered by the all-inclusive room rates) to private beach access and use of the on-site tennis, squash and basketball courts. For those looking for a bit more relaxation, take a dip in the rooftop infinity pool or book a massage at Spa Imagine. But if that's not enough to keep you on the property, wander into central Puerto Vallarta, located about 10 miles north. In addition to offering several natural and architectural marvels, the city provides plenty of delicious eats. If you'd rather dine on-site, recent visitors said you can't go wrong with any of the resort's eateries (although they caution that the restaurants can be a bit pricey if you don't opt for the all-inclusive plan). The accommodations were another point of praise for previous guests. Each includes a walk-in rain shower, a terrace with a hammock and a Jacuzzi tub, a 55-inch LED TV and electric curtains controlled by the in-suite iPad. Keep in mind: Hotel Mousai is an adults-only property, so leave the kids at home during your stay. Its villas are built into the cliff, offering panoramic ocean views. Each comes appointed with a heated pool, sun deck and terrace, all of which are made from locally sourced materials. With a fusion of Asian and Latin American design elements, the resort offers what it calls a "holistic Asian ambiance," signature to the Banyan Tree brand. Though this New Age aura permeates the entire five-star property, it's perhaps most noticeable at the spa, where therapists pamper visitors with East-meets-West massage techniques. Seeking more relaxation? Take a dip in the hotel's infinity pool, a favorite feature among past guests. Afterward, cap off your day with gourmet Thai dishes served at Saffron, a preferred dining spot, or sample the Latin- and Asian-inspired plates at La Nao or the flavorful seafood entrees at Las Rocas Grill & Bar.

About 10 miles south of downtown Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, this all-inclusive resort exclusively for adults occupies a prime swath of shoreline. Grand Sirenis Matlali Hills Resort & Spa
    La Cruz de Huanacaxtle
    4.5-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4 based on 867 reviewsTripAdvisor (867)

Located about 15 miles northwest of Puerto Vallarta, this boutique hotel is built into the hills bordering Banderas Bay, giving guests panoramic views of Mexico's picturesque coastline and the mountains. Travelers have described the Grand Sirenis Matlali Hills Resort & Spa as tranquil thanks to its secluded location among the verdant nature preserve that surrounds the property. Visitors can hike or bike along trails within the nearby vegetation, or take a complimentary 10-minute shuttle bus to the hotel's Eva Mandarina Beach Club, which serves drinks and snacks. Back at the hotel, all rooms come with free Wi-Fi access, Molton Brown toiletries, a scents and pillow menu as well as 24-hour concierge service. Guests, however, recommend springing for a villa, which are nearly twice the size of the suites and feature a private terrace with a pool and a fully equipped kitchen. In terms of out-of-room amenities, the hotel comes up a little short compared to its nearby resort counterparts, with only a fitness center, two pools and a spa, but that didn't bother guests much. The hotel's relaxing atmosphere and smiling staff were enough, according to past visitors. Although, a few noted that when it came to arranging off-site activities, some employees were a little clueless. Cuisine, however, didn't disappoint at the Raixes Restaurant, which serves Mexican fare. Care to dine in your digs? Guests can arrange for a private chef to cook for them if they booked villas.

Las Hadas Golf Resort & Marina
    Manzanillo
    4-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4 based on 1585 reviewsTripAdvisor (1585)

Located on the small peninsula that juts into the Pacific Ocean from Manzanillo, Las Hadas Golf Resort & Marina specializes in all things coastal. Guests say that this resort's quarter-mile-long stretch of sand is calm and ideal for snorkeling, and its marina makes a great jumping-off point for fishing excursions. And because of this resort's close proximity to Las Hadas Golf Course, guests can opt for a specialized golf package that grants them complimentary greens fees. The resort itself is gleaming white, featuring Arabian-inspired architectural elements like graceful arches and spires. And though some previous visitors say the decor is a bit outdated, most agree that Las Hadas' 234 guest rooms and suites are comfortable, and approve of the private terraces or balconies and Gilchrist & Soames bath products (some accommodations also boast private plunge pools). In terms of dining, the resort houses three restaurants.  While Los Delfines Restaurant earns high praise from past patrons, some do caution that the food leans toward the pricier side.

TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4 based on 3235 reviewsTripAdvisor (3235)

It's hard to miss Las Brisas Ixtapa: The resort's orange exterior proves a stark contrast to Ixtapa's verdant landscape. But the resort's industrial design works in its favor. For example, the slanted facade allows every room to boast its own balcony with unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean. And previous guests describe the rooms' contemporary furnishings and amenities (such as minibars and satellite TVs) to be well above par. If you're looking to splurge, some travelers recommend upgrading to a junior suite, which comes equipped with a private terrace outfitted with a hammock, chairs and a Jacuzzi. But don't plan on staying cooped up in your room; Las Brisas Ixtapa offers plenty of ways to get out and about. Golfers will appreciate the resort's southern Ixtapa location, which places putters within 3 miles of the Marina Ixtapa Golf Club and the Ixtapa Golf Course. On the property, you'll find four swimming pools and four tennis courts, and the adjacent beach provides a great setting for a day of lounging. Las Brisas Ixtapa also houses six restaurants, though former guests note that the food here leans toward the pricey side.

Depending on your view, the Quinta Real Acapulco is either outdated or a vintage classic. Anchored on Punta Diamante beach (in Acapulco's Golden Zone), Quinta Real Acapulco is frequently lauded by guests for its peaceful atmosphere. Each of the 61 suites boasts an oversized bathroom, satellite TV, sea-inspired accents, local artwork and sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. While guests lament the antiquated accents, they don't seem to mind giving the hotel major kudos for the pool. Though compact, the pool – which faces the khaki-colored sands of the beach – is both relaxing and well-staffed, according to past visitors. In fact, some guests preferred the poolside eats to the high-end Mexican and international dishes found at the on-site Restaurante Buenavista. Because the property is part of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts portfolio, members of the I Prefer program can earn or redeem points here.
