Founded in 1953, RIU is best known for its all-inclusive resorts. Since debuting its first property in Mallorca, Spain, the brand now offers approximately 100 hotels in 19 countries. Most of RIU's hotels are situated in Mexico, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, with the properties reflecting their tropical surroundings in their decor and amenities. Since many outposts are located on the beach, part of RIU's all-inclusive offerings cover guests' use of water sports equipment like kayaks and windsurfing boards. The majority of RIU's resorts feature kids clubs and daytime entertainment geared toward the younger crowd, as well as adult amenities like spas, night clubs and evening shows. In 2010, the hotel group expanded its portfolio to open its first urban outpost in Panama City, introducing its newest brand, RIU Plaza. Several RIU properties appear on our Best Hotels in the USA, Best Hotels in Europe and Best Hotels in Mexico rankings; those properties are listed below.
