Each year, more than 1,000 independent boutique hotels apply to become a part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World portfolio. However, only 5 percent are invited to join the brand, meaning travelers can expect quality amenities, inviting atmospheres and impeccable accommodations when staying at an SLH-affiliated hotel. What's more, mystery inspectors visit the brand's 500-plus properties annually to ensure that guests are experiencing the highest standards of service and value. This brand markets itself as a champion of hidden treasures, so no two Small Luxury Hotels are alike. However, one consistent perk of the SLH brand is the free-to-join INVITED program. This three-tiered benefits system includes rewards like room upgrades and free breakfast. Most importantly, this brand gives customers options: Its portfolio includes everything from family-friendly historical inns to adults-only resorts with Michelin-starred restaurants. Keep in mind, most of the brand's hotels are located outside of the United States, with numerous outposts in Europe and Asia. You can explore several Small Luxury Hotels of the World properties on our Best Hotels rankings.

Stretching across 8 acres of Grenada's prized Grand Anse Beach, Spice Island Beach Resort is a family-run boutique resort. Surrounded by lemon, almond and sea grape trees, each suite features a patio, balcony or terrace, plus a minibar, bathrobes and slippers, Frette linens and Molton Brown toiletries. Recent guests agree that the Seagrape Beach Suites are worth the splurge thanks to their whirlpool tubs with ocean views, private patios and gardens, chaise lounge chairs and double hammock sets. Just in case hammock-lounging didn't fill your relaxation quota, the in-house Janissa's Spa provides body polishes and massages. And encouraging guests to take advantage of its primo beachside location, Spice Island's all-inclusive room rates cover snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, tennis, cycling and green fees at a local golf course. When hunger strikes, head to Oliver's Restaurant, which serves up a Creole-inspired menu accompanied by live music, or the Sea and Surf Terrace & Bar for gourmet international dishes with a Caribbean twist. Although a few past diners desired more on-site dining options, most enjoyed their meals at both eateries.

    Free Breakfast

This grouping of exclusive cottages can be found on the private island of Petit St. Vincent, roughly 4 miles southwest of Union Island. Built from local stone and wood, the resort's 22 cottages feature bright and airy decor, complete with fresh white, blue and green linens, stone walls and private wooden decks. When you're not lounging in your room or enjoying a massage at the Hillside Spa, you can take part in yoga classes, play a round of tennis or golf (the golf course is located on nearby Canouan Island) or set sail on the surrounding cerulean sea. After working up an appetite, past visitors recommend grabbing a bite to eat at the Beach Restaurant. Chairs are anchored into the sand, and meals are served under thatched roofs and palm trees. (If you prefer inside seating and heartier meals, you can also choose to dine at the Main Restaurant.) While recent guests gushed about the resort's beautiful grounds and attentive service, they also warned that if you're used to an all-inclusive Sandals-like experience, this isn't the retreat for you.

    Hotel El Convento

    4.5-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 2953 reviewsTripAdvisor (2953)
    Free WiFi

Housed in a 17th-century convent, this opulent San Juan, Puerto Rico, property impresses guests with its old-world allures (think: Andalusian tile floors, vintage antiques and mahogany beams). But that's not all Hotel El Convento has going for it: Guests also praise the modern comforts found in every room. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi access, work desks and Bose radios. However, some warn that the in-room internet access is spotty and that the water pressure in showers is weak. But the property's outstanding service and sublime location outweigh its drawbacks. Hotel El Convento resides in the middle of Old San Juan, offering easy access to historic attractions like Castillo de San Cristóbal and El Morro. Plus, vacationers have access to a plunge pool and a Jacuzzi, two restaurants that serve Spanish tapas and Puerto Rican cuisine, a 24-hour fitness center and a lounge with complimentary wines and hors d'oeuvres every afternoon. As a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World portfolio, Hotel El Convento participates in the brand's INVITED rewards program.

    5-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 5 based on 240 reviewsTripAdvisor (240)
    Free WiFi

The first newly built hotel on St. Barts in 20 years, Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa started welcoming guests in 2016 and reopened fully in October 2018 after repairing damage caused by Hurricane Irma. The luxury resort is perched directly on the beach, overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Le Barthélemy's rooms and suites feature garden, lake or ocean views and are decorated in neutral hues of tan and white with pops of green and blue or pink. The property is home to a fitness center and a spa with traditional services and amenities, plus a blow-dry bar, a nail salon and yoga classes. When it comes to dining, travelers can indulge in French-Caribbean fusion cuisine and take in the views at the alfresco Aux Amis and Aux Amis Plage. Visitors also have the option of booking half- or full-board meal plans with their rooms during the summer months. Meanwhile, those looking to enjoy drinks can head to the rooftop bar (live music is available on Friday and Saturday nights). Overall, previous travelers were blown away by the hotel's understated elegance, impressive service and inviting atmosphere. Sandwiched between the sands of Puerto Plata's coveted Playa Dorada and the greens of the Playa Dorada Golf Course, this Small Luxury Hotels of the World outpost – which participates in the brand's INVITED rewards program – wins guests over with its relaxing atmosphere, friendly staff and beautiful decor. Casa Colonial Beach & Spa's 50 suites are dressed in beige and cream hues and are outfitted with oversized Roman tubs, separate walk-in showers, minibars, free Wi-Fi access and private balconies or patios. When you're refreshed and ready to go, Casa Colonial encourages you to tee off at the nearby fairways, offering 20 percent off of green fees at the club. If you're not one for hitting the links, previous visitors recommend indulging in a treatment at Bagua Spa, strolling through the hotel gardens or simply lounging by the rooftop infinity pool. The only aspect of Casa Colonial that some past guests cited as unsatisfactory is the beach. When you've worked up an appetite, grab a bite to eat at Lucia (the fine dining establishment) or Veranda (a casual eatery open daily for breakfast and lunch). Both eateries earn ample praise from reviewers.

Located less than 2 miles away from its sister property, CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa, the resort offers 80 suites equipped with espresso machines, minibars, walk-in closets and bathrooms with dual sinks and separate showers and tubs. Billing itself as a "foodie's paradise," the resort grants guests access to numerous restaurants. Previous travelers raved about their meals at The Yacht Club and Breezes Restaurant and Lounge, adding that the staff members went out of their way to make sure their vacation was excellent. Much like its sister property, The Sandpiper, Coral Reef Club sits surrounded by lush foliage on Barbados' western coast (near Holetown). Occupying 12 acres, Coral Reef Club's 88 rooms, cottages, suites and villas all feature furnished balconies or patios, separate showers and tubs, work desks and feather beds. If you don't opt for a cottage or suite with a private plunge pool, Coral Reef Club boasts two tree-lined pools, not to mention complimentary access to water sports equipment like kayaks and snorkel gear. Prefer to stay landlocked? The resort also touts two tennis courts, a fitness center and a set of garden pathways that snake throughout the bougainvillea-shaded grounds. Navigate the labyrinth on your own, or sign up for a complimentary garden tour, which are available every Wednesday. If a stroll through the foliage isn't relaxing enough for you, venture to the spa for a massage or some meditation. Coral Reef Club also offers alfresco dining at its restaurant, which recent guests enjoyed despite their meals' high prices. To offset this added expense, Small Luxury Hotels of the World patrons with INVITED loyalty program memberships can use accrued reward night vouchers to pay for rooms.

Named for its location on the "point" of Grace Bay in the Turks and Caicos Islands, this boutique resort evokes a sense of 19th-century British colonial elegance thanks to its ornate banisters and whitewashed walls. Each of Point Grace Resort and Spa's suites and penthouses boasts more than 1,000 square feet of space, with separate bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens and en-suite bathrooms (which feature claw foot tubs). And because of the property's affiliation with Small Luxury Hotels of the World, members of the INVITED rewards program can use reward night vouchers to cover the cost of their suite. Guests can dine at either Grace's Cottage or Hutchings Restaurant for a taste of the Caribbean, although some recent guests said the menus lack variety. For a bit of relaxation, visit the Thalasso Spa for a wide variety of services, including facials, massages and salt scrubs. Or, visitors can head to the beach to borrow complimentary nonmotorized water sports equipment, such as kayaks, paddleboards and Hobie Cat sailboats.

At The Sandpiper, it's all about the gardens. Nestled in Holetown, Barbados, this small, family-owned and -operated hotel receives consistent praise from guests for its well-manicured foliage. The hotel even houses three Tree Top Suites (lodgings surrounded by palm leaves but not actually suspended in the trees), which include luxurious amenities like terraces, open sun decks and private plunge pools. If you don't want to splurge, opt for a Garden View Room. Each includes a patio or balcony that overlooks the hotel's signature greenery. Extending its well-groomed vegetation to the beach, The Sandpiper boasts a shaded wooden dock that overlooks the shoreline. When you're not lounging dockside, take a dip, set out on a Hobie Cat sailboat or kayak (equipment rental is complimentary) or learn how to scuba dive at The Sandpiper's sister property, Coral Reef Club. Given that Coral Reef Club sits within walking distance, the two properties also share a spa. Just make sure you head back to The Sandpiper for dinner – guests highly recommend sampling The Restaurant's Caribbean-inspired dishes. But remember, the eatery's menu is limited, so travelers with dietary restrictions, such as vegans, may want to consider dining elsewhere. Also keep in mind: Members of INVITED, the Small Luxury Hotels of the World rewards program, can cash in accrued reward night vouchers for rooms here.

The Inn at English Harbour – located less than 13 miles southeast of St. John's, Antigua's capital – has all the amenities of a big-name resort, such as the beach at Freemans Bay and the many on-site activities. Treat yourself to an afternoon at The Inn's Asian- and Caribbean-inspired spa or play a round of tennis on one of two grassy courts. The 28 marble- and mahogany-floored rooms are within walking distance of the beach, while the cottages sit right on it. Recent guests said that while the food at the Terrace Restaurant was good, it lacked a large variety for those on extended stays. Guests were more complementary of the resort's rooms, which feature ocean views, flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations and private verandas. Since this property is part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World family, members of SLH's INVITED rewards program can use accrued free reward night vouchers to pay for rooms here.
