Each year, more than 1,000 independent boutique hotels apply to become a part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World portfolio. However, only 5 percent are invited to join the brand, meaning travelers can expect quality amenities, inviting atmospheres and impeccable accommodations when staying at an SLH-affiliated hotel. What's more, mystery inspectors visit the brand's 500-plus properties annually to ensure that guests are experiencing the highest standards of service and value. This brand markets itself as a champion of hidden treasures, so no two Small Luxury Hotels are alike. However, one consistent perk of the SLH brand is the free-to-join INVITED program. This three-tiered benefits system includes rewards like room upgrades and free breakfast. Most importantly, this brand gives customers options: Its portfolio includes everything from family-friendly historical inns to adults-only resorts with Michelin-starred restaurants. Keep in mind, most of the brand's hotels are located outside of the United States, with numerous outposts in Europe and Asia. You can explore several Small Luxury Hotels of the World properties on our Best Hotels rankings.

    Hotel de la Soledad
    Morelia
    4-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 447 reviewsTripAdvisor (447)

If you're the type of traveler who values a hotel's appearance and history just as much as its amenities, then consider a stay at the Hotel de la Soledad. Occupying a charming 17th-century building and situated only half a block from the impressive Morelia Cathedral and the Plaza de Armas, the hotel proudly reflects its heritage without forgetting modern conveniences. Recent guests say the hotel blends elements of the building's original structure with contemporary touches and recommend booking a room overlooking the jungle-like courtyard. Accommodations are outfitted in clay, stone, wood and colonial-period art, while suites boast BVLGARI bath amenities, living rooms and, in some rooms, fireplaces. Visitors are also quick to recommend La Capilla Restaurant for its peaceful ambiance; however, if you're in the mood for casual bites, travelers suggest exploring Morelia's main square. But before heading out on the town, lodgers recommend enjoying a refreshing libation in the verdant courtyard.

TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 226 reviewsTripAdvisor (226)

Located in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Guanajuato, Mexico, Villa María Cristina is a boutique Small Luxury Hotels of the World mansion. Featuring Catalan mosaics, French cast iron columns and suites that are connected by a complex of terraces, patios and gardens, this all-suite property is filled with romantic Old World charm. However, modern amenities abound, including a movie theater, a kids plunge pool, a fitness center and a spa with steam baths and saunas. The 38 suites – including one private villa – are outfitted with Roche Bobois furniture, marble bathrooms, free Wi-Fi access, minibars, Bang Olufsen stereo equipment, original artwork and 500-thread-count linens. Some suites have private terraces with Jacuzzis that overlook Cerro de la Bufa (Bufa Hill). The hotel also boasts two restaurants: Teresita Restaurant, a fine dining eatery that serves gourmet Mexican cuisine, and Colombaia Restaurant, which serves breakfast, pizza and grilled seafood near the outdoor swimming pool. Additionally, there are two on-site bars, one of which serves sushi, and an extensive wine cellar. While the cuisine and service received high praise, several guests suggested requesting a room away from the eateries, as the noise can travel into the suites.

    Free WiFi

Surrounded by shopping, dining and entertainment venues, Stara Hamburgo sits one street removed from Mexico City's bustling financial district. Standard in-room amenities at this 60-room boutique hotel include 55-inch smart TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi access, iPads, marble bathrooms and private balconies or terraces with garden or street views. Recent guests note that the accommodations are huge and nicely decorated, but they let in a lot of outside noise. Past patrons also warn that parties on the property can go until the wee hours of the morning. Exploring the hotel, you'll find a spa, a gym, a library and a boutique shop that sells local artwork and products made by Mexican entrepreneurs. There are three restaurants on-site for when you get hungry. Luna Bistro serves organic, international cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meanwhile, Roof Garden offers meals throughout the day on the hotel's rooftop terrace. For lunch and dinner in an 18th-century building with large windows and stone arches, take a seat at Five's Urban Cuisine Restaurant. Stara Hamburgo is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World family.
