Each year, more than 1,000 independent boutique hotels apply to become a part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World portfolio. However, only 5 percent are invited to join the brand, meaning travelers can expect quality amenities, inviting atmospheres and impeccable accommodations when staying at an SLH-affiliated hotel. What's more, mystery inspectors visit the brand's 500-plus properties annually to ensure that guests are experiencing the highest standards of service and value. This brand markets itself as a champion of hidden treasures, so no two Small Luxury Hotels are alike. However, one consistent perk of the SLH brand is the free-to-join INVITED program. This three-tiered benefits system includes rewards like room upgrades and free breakfast. Most importantly, this brand gives customers options: Its portfolio includes everything from family-friendly historical inns to adults-only resorts with Michelin-starred restaurants. Keep in mind, most of the brand's hotels are located outside of the United States, with numerous outposts in Europe and Asia. You can explore several Small Luxury Hotels of the World properties on our Best Hotels rankings.

TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 4907 reviewsTripAdvisor (4907)

Manhattan's Fashion District is the perfect home for this stylish boutique hotel, where vintage furniture sits alongside original artwork that nods to the hotel's millinery factory past. Guest rooms complete the industrial aesthetic with hardwood floors, marble bathrooms, antique bronze hinges and door handles and desks that resemble sewing machines from the earliest years of the 20th century. Recent visitors rave about the property's hip, spacious digs, highly accommodating staff and accessible midtown Manhattan location. Another popular draw is the Refinery Rooftop Bar and Lounge, which offers tasty cocktails and sweeping views of downtown Manhattan and the Empire State Building. Inside, the hotel's drinking and dining options include nostalgia-inspired seasonal cuisine at the Parker & Quinn Restaurant and prohibition era drinks at Winnie's Jazz Lounge.

    WestHouse Hotel New York
    New York, NY

TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 2365 reviewsTripAdvisor (2365)

Where 1920s glamour meets modern art deco design, the WestHouse New York is adorned with crystal chandeliers, eucalyptus wood accents and detailed handrails. This midtown Manhattan hotel is located at the corner of West 55th Street and Seventh Avenue. And the hotel offers guests a major perk for navigating the high-action neighborhood: Luxury concierge service WestHouse Attaché will design your New York itinerary, taking day-to-day activity planning off your hands. All that extra time should give you a chance to focus on enjoying the personal trainers, butlers, in-room spa treatments and overnight shoe shines all available upon request (and for a fee). Or simply fall into the Sferra luxury linens inside each of the 172 guest rooms and suites, where you can customize the temperature and music in your room with your Intelity Bedside Touchscreen Controls, or peruse the internet. Though keep in mind, there's a $45 per adult per night "residents fee;" this includes breakfast, afternoon treats and hors d'oeuvres, drinks on the terrace and the high-speed Wi-Fi. While some guests appreciated those extra offerings, guests who couldn't take advantage were not pleased they still had to pay the fee. Another point of contention among recent travelers was inconsistencies with the staff.

Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa
    Lake Placid, NY
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 1323 reviewsTripAdvisor (1323)

Overlooking Lake Placid's main street from a hilltop perch, the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa has been an Adirondack mainstay since 1883. The resort is filled with exposed wooden beams and cozy fireplaces reminiscent of the lodges of yesteryear, but Mirror Lake is still catching up to the times. Accommodations are outfitted with wooden furniture, vaulted ceilings and expansive windows that offer views of Mirror Lake and the surrounding mountains – and recent visitors say the panoramas are stunning. However, those looking to stay connected to the world bemoaned having to pay extra for Wi-Fi access. When it's time for some R&R outside your digs, head to the spa for a massage or body scrub, or take a dip in the hot tub. Aside from its location and ample on-site amenities, travelers also praise the delectable culinary offerings available at The View, Taste Bistro & Bar and The Cottage.

TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 4274 reviewsTripAdvisor (4274)
The Iroquois New York, a trendy midtown Manhattan boutique hotel located near Bryant Park and Grand Central Station, beckons to travelers looking to stay in the heart of the action, but a bit removed from the noise and lights surrounding Times Square. The accommodations boast upscale amenities like Frette robes, complimentary Wi-Fi access and soundproofed windows. In addition to having some of the city's most cherished attractions at your fingertips, here you'll also find a 24-hour fitness center fitted with a Finnish sauna, complimentary newspapers and an on-site eatery at your service. Although some recent visitors bemoan the standard rooms being on the small side, the majority have only positive things to say about the hotel's prime location and friendly staff members.

    Castle Hotel & Spa
    Tarrytown, NY
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4 based on 225 reviewsTripAdvisor (225)
    Free Parking

This hotel's name says it all. Situated in Tarrytown, New York, this unique lodging is literally a castle perched on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River. Constructed in 1910, the original building echoes the Norman castles of the British Isles, with epic stone walls and turrets, as well as wood paneling said to have belonged to King James II of England. And while this hotel's exterior exudes an Old World charm, the accommodations are updated with luxurious 21st century conveniences, including Tivoli Radio & Bose Sound systems, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, goose-down bed spreads and even fireplaces (in some rooms). The customer service, though, receives mixed reviews: Some recent guests said that they felt like royalty during their stay, while others said that staff seemed confused and could benefit from some additional training. Once you settle in, head to Equus restaurant, the hotel's intimate dining venue, which has both Zagat and recent patrons singing its praises.
