Each year, more than 1,000 independent boutique hotels apply to become a part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World portfolio. However, only 5 percent are invited to join the brand, meaning travelers can expect quality amenities, inviting atmospheres and impeccable accommodations when staying at an SLH-affiliated hotel. What's more, mystery inspectors visit the brand's 500-plus properties annually to ensure that guests are experiencing the highest standards of service and value. This brand markets itself as a champion of hidden treasures, so no two Small Luxury Hotels are alike. However, one consistent perk of the SLH brand is the free-to-join INVITED program. This three-tiered benefits system includes rewards like room upgrades and free breakfast. Most importantly, this brand gives customers options: Its portfolio includes everything from family-friendly historical inns to adults-only resorts with Michelin-starred restaurants. Keep in mind, most of the brand's hotels are located outside of the United States, with numerous outposts in Europe and Asia. You can explore several Small Luxury Hotels of the World properties on our Best Hotels rankings.

The resort is filled with exposed wooden beams and cozy fireplaces reminiscent of the lodges of yesteryear, but Mirror Lake is still catching up to the times. Accommodations are outfitted with wooden furniture, vaulted ceilings and expansive windows that offer views of Mirror Lake and the surrounding mountains – and recent visitors say the panoramas are stunning. This hotel's name says it all. Situated in Tarrytown, New York, this unique lodging is literally a castle perched on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River. Constructed in 1910, the original building echoes the Norman castles of the British Isles, with epic stone walls and turrets, as well as wood paneling said to have belonged to King James II of England. And while this hotel's exterior exudes an Old World charm, the accommodations are updated with luxurious 21st century conveniences, including Tivoli Radio & Bose Sound systems, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, goose-down bed spreads and even fireplaces (in some rooms). The customer service, though, receives mixed reviews: Some recent guests said that they felt like royalty during their stay, while others said that staff seemed confused and could benefit from some additional training. Once you settle in, head to Equus restaurant, the hotel's intimate dining venue, which has both Zagat and recent patrons singing its praises.

Soniat House is an idyllic choice for couples — the decor practically screams "rendezvous," with its four-poster beds (only available in some rooms), its French and Italian antique furniture and its candlelit courtyards. Each of the 30 rooms and suites has Frette linens and Molton Brown toiletries, plus free Wi-Fi access. The property wins favor with guests for its honor bar where guests can mix their own cocktails and the breakfast, which features fresh buttermilk biscuits and strawberry preserves, among other treats (for a fee). Plus, this hotel on Chartres Street is somewhat removed from the Big Easy hoopla. Travelers give kudos to the warm staff, but they also warn that if you're expecting convenient luxury, this may not be the NOLA home base for you. Recent guests say they flocked to The Soniat House Hotel knowing it would be more like an escape to the city's bygone era and therefore tolerated some of its flaws (no in-room coffee makers and a small, slow elevator) for the charming experience.

With just 28 rooms and suites spread throughout 11 restored cottages, the Inn at Montchanin Village & Spa is designed to feel like a step back in time, only with modern amenities. A member of the Historic Hotels of America, all of the inn's individually designed accommodations (which were built between 1799 and 1910) feature period antiques and furnishings, plus free Wi-Fi access, minifridges, European towel warmers, microwaves and coffee makers. Many also boast stone decor, hardwood floors, gas fireplaces and private terraces with gardens. Outside the rooms, guests have access to a spa with a variety of treatments, ranging from massages and facials to manicures and eyelash tinting. Additionally, there's a fitness center, several meeting and event spaces, a library and Krazy Kat's Restaurant, which was once the village's local blacksmith shop. Now, the eatery serves a mix of French and Asian cuisine. Recent guests loved the meticulous housekeeping service, kind staff and traditional decor, though some said the property was a bit too dated. Many also praised the inn's serene location in Delaware's Brandywine Valley, which is about 5 miles northwest of Wilmington, Delaware, and roughly 30 miles southwest of Philadelphia.

In the cute town of St. Helena, Southbridge Napa Valley delivers a quality stay. Recent visitors like the spacious rooms, quaint location and the convenience of the Health Spa Napa Valley across the street. Still, this rather small property is lucky to share some amenities with its sister property, Meadowood Napa Valley. For example, guests here are invited to dine at the highly acclaimed Restaurant at Meadowood. But that's not to say that sticking around Southbridge won't lead to a decent meal – the hotel is within walking distance of several notable eateries. But for the high room rates, some visitors expected more from their stay, claiming that the guest rooms here, though comfortable, weren't anything too special.

Where 1920s glamour meets modern art deco design, the WestHouse New York is adorned with crystal chandeliers, eucalyptus wood accents and detailed handrails. This midtown Manhattan hotel is located at the corner of West 55th Street and Seventh Avenue. And the hotel offers guests a major perk for navigating the high-action neighborhood: Luxury concierge service WestHouse Attaché will design your New York itinerary, taking day-to-day activity planning off your hands. All that extra time should give you a chance to focus on enjoying the personal trainers, butlers, in-room spa treatments and overnight shoe shines all available upon request (and for a fee). Or simply fall into the Sferra luxury linens inside each of the 172 guest rooms and suites, where you can customize the temperature and music in your room with your Intelity Bedside Touchscreen Controls, or peruse the internet. Though keep in mind, there's a $45 per adult per night "residents fee;" this includes breakfast, afternoon treats and hors d'oeuvres, drinks on the terrace and the high-speed Wi-Fi. While some guests appreciated those extra offerings, guests who couldn't take advantage were not pleased they still had to pay the fee. Another point of contention among recent travelers was inconsistencies with the staff.
