This upscale brand got its start in 1906 as the Italian chain Compagnia Italiana Grandi Alberghi, which included some of the most famous luxury hotels in Italy. Nearly a century later in 1994, the Starwood Group (which is now a part of Marriott International) purchased CIGA and its entire portfolio, which had expanded to include high-end hotels in Spain, Austria and Sardinia. Having been rebranded to better showcase what these hotels are all about, The Luxury Collection now comprises more than 100 hotels across 41 countries, including the United States. The amenities and decor in each property spotlights the history, the architecture and the culture of its surrounding city: For example, the spa at Hacienda Temozon in Mexico's Yucatan region offers treatments inspired by ancient Maya traditions, while The Liberty in Boston still retains some of the architectural elements of the former Charles Street Jail. And at each hotel, guests can expect excellent customer service, which is what earned The Luxury Collection properties several spots on our Best Hotels in the USA, Best Hotels in Europe and Best Hotels in Mexico rankings. What's more, because The Luxury Collection falls under the Marriott banner, frequent visitors can redeem their Marriott Rewards points at any property.

The US GRANT, A Luxury Collection Hotel, San Diego
    San Diego, CA
    2.4 miles to city center
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 2754 reviewsTripAdvisor (2754)
The son of former U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant opened this luxury downtown hotel in 1910. Today, THE US GRANT, A Luxury Collection Hotel, San Diego gives guests a taste of Old World glamour coupled with modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, coffee machines and marble bathrooms. The hotel also houses a fitness center and The Grant Grill, which is critically acclaimed and known for its fresh Californian cuisine. However, this Luxury Collection property probably isn't the ideal hotel for sun-seekers, since it's pretty far from San Diego's most popular beaches. On the other hand, it's quite close to many of the city's top attractions, and if you're a Marriott Bonvoy member looking to redeem or accrue reward points, this is an ideal place for you.

Palace Hotel, A Luxury Collection Hotel, San Francisco
    San Francisco, CA
    0.5 miles to city center
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 1811 reviewsTripAdvisor (1811)
The Palace Hotel first welcomed guests in 1875 as the world's largest and most luxurious hotel. But the earthquake of 1906 destroyed the property; the building that stands now was constructed in 1909. Still, the Palace wins guests over with its historical charm: The lobby draws attention with marble floors and high ceilings, and the guest rooms house more contemporary furnishings (alongside amenities such as high-speed internet access). But to truly experience the Palace in all its timeless glory, sit down to afternoon tea underneath the glass ceiling and crystal chandeliers of the Garden Court. (For dinner, head to the Pied Piper Restaurant, which serves traditional American fare.) There's also an indoor pool and fitness center on-site, which is perfect for those looking to recharge. Guests love the luxurious interiors and appreciate the cozy guest rooms. The staff also get a thumbs up as well for their warm, welcoming attitudes. What's more, as a member of the Luxury Collection hotel family, the Palace gladly welcomes guests looking to pay with or earn rewards through the Marriott Bonvoy program.

Las Alcobas, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Napa Valley
    St. Helena, CA
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 5 based on 62 reviewsTripAdvisor (62)
Located in St. Helena, a city in California's Napa Valley region, Las Alcobas is conveniently situated within 10 miles of can't-miss wineries like Frog's Leap, Castello di Amorosa and Robert Mondavi. But oenophiles will find plenty to enjoy on-site, too. This boutique property features the upscale Acacia House (helmed by "Top Chef Masters" winner Chris Cosentino), as well as an outdoor pool with a fire pit and pool bar. R&R-seekers can take advantage of the hotel's spa, where guests will find a steam room, a fitness center and a yoga studio. Following a day spent wine tasting or unwinding by the pool or in the spa, visitors can retreat to one of 68 guest rooms or suites. Each offers neutral decor with wood wall accents and a plethora of amenities, including a flat-screen TV, a freestanding bathtub and complimentary Wi-Fi access. And in select upgraded accommodations, travelers have access to private balconies, decks or terraces with fire pits and privacy curtains. Overall, past guests enjoyed their stays at Las Alcobas, citing the "incredible" staff, delicious food and "amazing" rooms as highlights. However, a few cautioned that some rooms are not adequately soundproofed. And because this hotel is part of the Marriott hotel family, Marriott Bonvoy members can earn or use points here.

SLS Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Beverly Hills
    Los Angeles, CA
    5.9 miles to city center
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4 based on 2117 reviewsTripAdvisor (2117)
Some say the SLS Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Beverly Hills is cool, both in good and bad ways. First the good: This standout property of hotelier Sam Nazarian is decked out in sleek furniture and just enough detailing to carve out a distinct personality without overwhelming visitors. For example, you'll find the acronym "SLS" branded on much of the hotel paraphernalia, each time offering a different meaning (coffee cups urge you to "sip liquids slowly"). Plus, the staff is often described as attentive, friendly and helpful with any questions or issues that arise. And now the not-so-good: Some guests say that the hotel's 'round the clock party atmosphere disrupts sleep. Luckily, rooms are well equipped and boast floor-to-ceiling windows, flat-screen TVs, Sealy beds and rain showers. And to end on a high point: This hotel on South La Cienega Boulevard does have what's becoming the norm in L.A. – a modish rooftop pool and a Ciel Spa. Plus, since this property is affiliated with the Marriott brand, members of the Marriott Bonvoy program can earn and redeem points when staying here.
