This upscale brand got its start in 1906 as the Italian chain Compagnia Italiana Grandi Alberghi, which included some of the most famous luxury hotels in Italy. Nearly a century later in 1994, the Starwood Group (which is now a part of Marriott International) purchased CIGA and its entire portfolio, which had expanded to include high-end hotels in Spain, Austria and Sardinia. Having been rebranded to better showcase what these hotels are all about, The Luxury Collection now comprises more than 100 hotels across 41 countries, including the United States. The amenities and decor in each property spotlights the history, the architecture and the culture of its surrounding city: For example, the spa at Hacienda Temozon in Mexico's Yucatan region offers treatments inspired by ancient Maya traditions, while The Liberty in Boston still retains some of the architectural elements of the former Charles Street Jail. And at each hotel, guests can expect excellent customer service, which is what earned The Luxury Collection properties several spots on our Best Hotels in the USA, Best Hotels in Europe and Best Hotels in Mexico rankings. What's more, because The Luxury Collection falls under the Marriott banner, frequent visitors can redeem their Marriott Bonvoy points at any property.

  • This Luxury Collection property is so stunning it could easily be mistaken for a Spanish palace. Located in the scenic Santa Cruz neighborhood of Seville, the Hotel Alfonso XIII has a knack for putting guests in a trance with its artistic, Andalusian architecture. Common areas are supported by marble arches and columns, frescos line the ceilings and intricate ceramic artwork adorns the walls. And that's just the lobby. Rooms are a little more modest, but still feature eye-catching details like Moorish arches over beds, ornate glass light fixtures and patterned marble floors. Standard accommodations feature views of the property's pretty patio and come equipped with complimentary Wi-Fi, LCD TVs and minibars. The Hotel Alfonso's flora-filled patio was a favorite among recent guests, as was the dining experience at the Restaurante San Fernando. There's also Ena by Carles Abellán, which primarily serves tapas, and the art deco-style Bar Americano. Should you want to work off some of Spain's notoriously hearty fare, there's a gym on-site and a pool surrounded by trees (a traveler favorite). Outside the Alfonso, guests can find city's best attractions within a stone's throw of the property, including Real Alcázar and Plaza de España. And because this hotel is part of the Marriott hotel family, Marriott Bonvoy members can earn and use points here.
