The Thompson Chicago sits in the Near North Side neighborhood, one block back from Chicago's Michigan Avenue near Oak Street Beach and close to many attractions and restaurants. Recent guests loved the location of this Thompson property and all agree the decor in the lobby, including the large fireplace with its library feel, strike a nice balance between refined and homey. Past visitors said that everyone from the general manager to the doorman is congenial – and they're especially skilled at remembering names here. The Thompson Chicago's rooms offer a sleek, sophisticated design, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows with views of Lake Michigan and The Magnificent Mile, 400-thread-count Sferra linens and bathrooms with rainfall showers. Additional conveniences include the two dining options that are popular with guests as well as locals. Nico Osteria is an Italian-inspired seafood restaurant, serving dishes like lobster spaghetti and swordfish pancetta, while the Salone Nico keeps up the European feel with an extensive wine list from Greece and Italy, although both dining options can be a bit pricey for some travelers' tastes.

    Chicago Athletic Association
    Chicago, IL
    4.5-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 2190 reviewsTripAdvisor (2190)
    Free WiFi

What recent visitors appreciate most about the Chicago Athletic Association hotel is its distinct point of view. The hotel is housed in the building that was once home to the Chicago Athletic Association, and its Venetian Gothic architecture dates back to the 1890s. Staying true to its athletic heritage, the hotel's designers repurposed elements of the original club into the property's vintage look. For instance, a pommel horse is used as a bench and nightstands feature tennis racquet leather grips for legs. Beyond the interesting aesthetics, rooms also offer boxing-style robes, complimentary Wi-Fi access, C.O. Bigelow toiletries and bedside tables with USB flash drive outlets. Aside from the unique interiors, travelers also rave about the rooftop restaurant, Cindy's. Housed within a vaulted glass and steel atrium, the space offers views of Millennium Park (situated across the street from the hotel), the Art Institute of Chicago and Lake Michigan. Equally impressive are the hotel's five other bars and eateries, ranging from an on-site Shake Shack to a more formal farm-to-table restaurant. Reviewers particularly liked the Game Room bar, which is located in the original billiards room of the athletic club and features games like shuffleboard and bocce ball. It should come as no surprise that the hotel also features a 24-hour fitness center with complimentary, trainer-led group runs along Lake Michigan every Saturday at 8 a.m. You can also get your workout in riding around the Windy City on the hotel's complimentary bikes (available seasonally).

    dana hotel and spa

TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 4977 reviewsTripAdvisor (4977)
    Free WiFi

The dana hotel and spa in Chicago's Near North district makes a great home base for those who want to take advantage of the Windy City's long list of things to do while hanging their hat somewhere stylish. Travelers love this boutique hotel's swanky ambiance. The accommodations are fairly minimal in terms of decor, but each room comes equipped with a rainforest shower, Egyptian cotton linens and a Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin sound system. However, the main attraction here is the view. Guest rooms feature expansive wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows that allow guests to look out over the city. Guests recommend booking a corner room on a higher floor to have multiple Chicago views, but should you end up on a lower floor, you can always take in the sights from the hotel's stylish Vertigo Sky Lounge. On another note, you should know that the stylish dana hotel's day spa is extremely popular. So if you want a weekend massage and facial, consider making your appointment several months in advance.

theWit, A DoubleTree By Hilton Hotel
    Chicago, IL
    4.5-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 2953 reviewsTripAdvisor (2953)

As its name suggests, theWit aims to entertain. The decor – with its bright colors and stained-glass windows – evokes an amusing feel, while stand-up comedy can often be heard over the speakers in the hallways and lobby. It's no surprise why theWit tries so hard to get a rise out of you: Its perch on the end of the theater district (next door to the Chicago Theater in the Loop) means that this hotel has some steep competition. But unlike the surrounding performance spaces, this DoubleTree-affiliated property has much more than jokes. Should you be a bigger fan of movies than stand-up, consider hosting a viewing party in the on-site movie theater. Or guests recommend spending some time on the rooftop bar or in the hotel spa – both venues are bound to please. And the fun doesn't have to stop at bedtime: Guests love playful amenities like smartphone docking station, touchscreen telephones and flat-screen TVs. Because this Chicago hotel falls into the Hilton profile, members of the Hilton Honors rewards program can earn and redeem points here.

    The Whitehall Hotel
    Chicago, IL
    4-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4 based on 2055 reviewsTripAdvisor (2055)
    Free WiFi

This landmark hotel in the Near North section of Chicago – just a block from The Magnificent Mile –offers a taste of European elegance in the midst of the city's windy bustle. Guests particularly love The Whitehall Hotel's demure sophistication, which emanates from its antique furniture and abundance of artwork. However, bear in mind that because this is an older property, guest rooms tend to be on the smaller side, which can be a deterrent for visiting families. That said, each accommodation offers a vintage aura without sacrificing convenience, sporting Egyptian cotton linens, complimentary wireless Internet access, a flat-screen HD TV and mahogany furniture. Guests say that the 2013 renovations paid off, describing the look and feel of this hotel as cozy and stylish, though some think more could have been done. However, recent visitors assure that the on-site restaurant, Fornetto Mei, and friendly service staff (the doormen, especially) more than make up for any lingering issues.

    Warwick Allerton Hotel Chicago
    Chicago, IL
    4-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4 based on 2214 reviewsTripAdvisor (2214)

Many say the Warwick Allerton Hotel Chicago's best feature is its perch on The Magnificent Mile – at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Huron Street – but they're overlooking the hotel's historic appeal. This boutique hotel has been welcoming Chicago visitors since the 1920s, and although guest rooms here may be smaller than those at competing hotels, travelers say that the hints of history are worth acknowledging. First opened as a club hotel, the Warwick Allerton Hotel Chicago transformed into one of the Windy City's hottest hangout spots; by the 1950s (after the famous Tip Top Tap sign was installed), the property had welcomed the likes of Bob Hope, Danny Kaye and Ginger Rogers. Today, the property strives to accommodate guests in the same fashion. Rooms have received an upgrade since the glory days and now house contemporary amenities like Wi-Fi access (for a fee), flat-screen TVs and minibars. Meanwhile, travelers highly recommend a meal at the hotel's M Avenue Restaurant and Lounge, which specializes in seasonal local cuisine. You'll also find numerous neighborhood eateries within walking distance of the property.

TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4 based on 1889 reviewsTripAdvisor (1889)

Ambassador Chicago occupies a historic building in the Gold Coast neighborhood of the city, but don't expect the Old World ambiance that often comes with older hotels. Rather than feature tinkling chandeliers and heavy tapestries, the lobby at this Preferred outpost feels crisp with all-white decor and simple, elegant furniture. Meanwhile, rooms offer 300-thread-count Frette linens, complimentary Wi-Fi access and minibars in addition to a sleek, modern design. Some of Chicago's top attractions (such as The Magnificent Mile and the Lincoln Park Zoo) are located within walking distance, and recent guests say they prefer this boutique property to the larger chain hotels throughout the city. Perhaps an even bigger draw than the eclectic design is the Booth One  restaurant, a favorite celebrity watering hole. For this restaurant, James Beard Award-winner Jean-Georges Vongerichten created a menu full of regional flavors based on farm-to-table cuisine.

Located five blocks from The Magnificent Mile on Chicago's North Side, the Hotel Felix has an almost perfect location for travelers looking to hit the city's most popular attractions. And the hotel's sustainable practices (it was the first hotel in Chicago to receive a Silver LEED certification) are a hit with those who strive to live green. This boutique property's 225 rooms are outfitted with luxurious bedding and techie perks, like complimentary Wi-Fi access, iHome docking stations, and motion-activated lighting. But not everyone who stays here leaves feeling "felix" (the hotel takes its name from the Latin word for "happy").
