Hotel Wailea in Maui, Hawaii, stretches across 15 acres of expertly manicured tropical gardens. Offering just 72 suites, this adults-only hotel's calling card is its secluded atmosphere and its spacious lodging options (rooms measure 720 square feet). All suites have separate bedrooms and living areas, plus furnished lanais (balconies), kitchenettes, deep soaking tubs and Wi-Fi access. Venture out of your room to explore the grounds and partake in activities like canoeing, kiteboarding and yoga. When it's time to cool off, take a dip in the outdoor pool. And if you're hoping to stay on the beach for lunch, the hotel's restaurant will prepare and pack a picnic for you. For peace and quiet, it's hard to beat the Koa Kea Hotel & Resort. The property hosts 121 rooms on a spectacular portion of Po'ipu Beach amidst fierce competition from larger brand-name resorts nearby. The Koa Kea's design is more urban-chic than easygoing tropical, with guest rooms sporting contemporary furnishings and amenities like flat-screen TVs, high-speed internet access, espresso machines and iPod docking stations. But visitors find plenty of relaxing solitude here: Not only do accommodations boast private lanais (balconies), but the Koa Kea Hotel also houses an intimate spa (with only five treatment rooms), a lagoon-style, lava-inspired swimming pool, an oceanfront lawn with firepits and direct access to the beach. As for dining, there is the Red Salt, which showcases Hawaiian cuisine in an intimate setting. And according to recent guests, the staff is accommodating and personable; so don't hesitate to ask for anything from more linens to directions to the closest hiking trail.

Some say the Grand Hyatt's exceptional staff will make you feel right at home. However, your home probably doesn't have immaculately kept tropical grounds, a sand-bottomed lagoon pool or a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. This resort treats Kauai travelers to a relaxed getaway, with guest rooms outfitted with flat-screen TVs, complimentary refillable water bottles and private lanais (balconies). But you'll likely not be spending much time indoors, as the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort offers plenty in the way of island activities. On the property, you'll find several pools and lagoons worth laying by, as well as a variety of cultural performances taking place on any given day. Visitors enjoy indulging at the Anara Spa and teeing off on the gorgeous Po'ipu Bay Golf Course. And when it comes to dining, travelers say you really can't go wrong with the Grand Hyatt's restaurants, which serve up a variety of cuisines ranging from Hawaiian to Asian to Italian. The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa is along the south coast of Kauai, east of Po'ipu Beach. Members of the Hyatt Rewards rewards program can earn and redeem points here, which helps offset the pricey hotel's nightly room rates.

Perched on the eastern shore of Maui, The Travaasa Hana is the first resort on the island to see the sun rise. Not only that, but it is unapologetically Hawaiian. Guests are invited to explore local traditions like lei making and ukulele classes taught on-site by staff members. There's also the fact that the hotel doesn't just have a whirlpool — it has a lava rock whirlpool. And as far as technology goes, you won't find high-tech amenities in these guest rooms. That's right: no TVs, clocks or radios — with the exception of the Waikoloa Family Suites which feature a TV in the living room. Travaasa Hana's accommodations are designed to help you disconnect, featuring private hot tubs and spacious balconies. Guests especially enjoy staying here thanks to the hotel's all-inclusive rates; the cost of your room will also cover meals and spa treatments, if you're so inclined.

The gorgeous grounds of Honua Kai Resort & Spa occupy a good chunk of Ka'anapali Beach along the western coast of Maui – a location that previous guests just can't help but praise. As for the experience of staying here, travelers have mixed feelings. Honua Kai's suite-style accommodations come equipped with full kitchens, ample living space and balconies or terraces; however, some recent travelers say that some of the balconies' ocean vistas leave much to be desired. And while visitors were generally pleased with the resort's atmosphere, they say to look elsewhere if you're seeking a more romantic ambiance, as this property is popular among families and some partiers. It's easy to see why: Not only can the rooms house larger groups, but the resort also boasts a pool with an accompanying water park. Should you need a break from the family bustle, the Ho'ola Spa can easily serve as a place of refuge.

Sitting along Waikiki Beach's coveted sands, the Sheraton Waikiki is one of the larger hotels on the Honolulu shore. That can be both good and bad. On one hand, recent guests say there is plenty to do both on-site and off. On the other hand, some visitors say this hotel can feel crowded – not only are there dozens of travelers milling around, but this Sheraton's proximity to the convention center makes it popular with business travelers, too. However, many visitors are willing to brave the crowds for access to the Sheraton Waikiki's excellent location in the heart of the action. In terms of amenities, there are two oceanfront pools and cultural activities such as hula lessons and arts and crafts on-site. Boasting the largest single-level outdoor pool in Hawaii, along with flowing fountains, lagoons and a prime stretch of beach, the Kaua'i Marriott Resort surrounds its visitors with plenty of water. Travelers say that the resort's grounds are impressive, and many describe the guest rooms here as comfortable. Accommodations at this Marriott property feature red- and orange-hued decor and amenities like flat-screen TVs and high-speed internet access (for a fee). Travelers highly recommend requesting a room with a balcony so that you can enjoy the resort's pleasant surroundings and excellent views. However, the Lihue Airport is only 2 miles north, meaning that the isolated resort tranquility can get quashed by the sound of a passing plane. So it's not the best place for a quiet, romantic vacation. Free WiFi
Sitting about 4 miles south of the Kapalua Airport along the Kaanapali Coast, The Westin Maui Resort & Spa feels more like a theme park then a resort. The property features 87,000-square-foot network of five separate pools joined by swim-through grottos, waterfalls and even a giant waterslide – giving nearby resorts a run for their money. But this Westin property will appeal to couples as well thanks to its Heavenly Spa and luxurious guest rooms. Accommodations here are dressed in creamy hues and feature Westin's signature Heavenly beds, HD flat-screen TVs and private lanais (balconies). With such a wide appeal, it's not surprising that travelers complain of dense crowds; in other words, you'll need to get up as early as 7 a.m. if you want a chair to lounge in around the aforementioned pool. And with so many travelers to please, the customer service here isn't always up to Marriott standards, some visitors say. Removed from the more crowded resort areas, the Waimea Plantation Cottages are located on the southwestern side of Kauai. Modeled after the original sugar plantations that covered the island in the 1800s and early 1900s, Waimea offers 61 authentic plantation-style cottages that range from studio garden view duplexes to four- and five-bedroom oceanfront cottages. Each spacious accommodation is outfitted with Internet access, a flat-screen TV and a full kitchen with a host of appliances. Recent guests do warn that most cottages don't come equipped with central air conditioning, but said that the fans and window units worked well to keep the accommodations cool. While the plantation does not have a restaurant, the cottages do have full kitchens. Waimea offers a pool but not much else, which is why past visitors said it's the perfect place for those seeking little action and lots of R&R. Guests praise these spectacular vistas, but also warn that this peace and quiet comes attached to some poor customer service. Make the most of your scenic stay by booking a View Suite, which offers a glimpse of enviable mountain landscapes from your own private patio. Suites also feature fully equipped kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, hardwood floors and iPod docking stations. Lodgers note that the rooms, though spacious, are in need of a major refurbishment.
