    Lake Placid Lodge
    Lake Placid, NY
    5-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 475 reviewsTripAdvisor (475)
    Free Parking
    Free WiFi

This rustic lodge set on the shore of Lake Placid in the Adirondacks is stunning inside and out, according to recent guests. Typical of most Relais & Châteaux properties, accommodations are exquisitely designed with rustic objets d'art, custom-made beds crafted from tree limbs and the occasional private balcony overlooking the waterfront. And then there are the hotel's romantic cabins, which offer couples a more secluded (but still lavish) retreat. Travelers love dining at Artisans Restaurant and Maggie's Pub but are split on service. Some said the hotel staff members go above and beyond to provide first-rate service, while others encountered slow dinner service and less-than-impressive wait staff during recent stays. Keep in mind that if you frequent Relais & Châteaux and are part of the hotel's exclusive Club 5C, you are eligible to receive extra perks, such as complimentary room upgrades, for choosing to stay here.

Whiteface Lodge exudes a warm, cozy atmosphere. Exposed wood beams, pine dining chairs, granite hearths, mounted animal heads and chandeliers crafted out of deer antlers deck the lodge. And the list of rustic touches goes on and on. Families flock to Whiteface for the mélange of kid-friendly entertainment, including a 56-seat surround-sound movie theater, a 10-pin bowling alley and a game room chock-full of foosball and air hockey tables. And the inviting accommodations are a big hit, too, thanks to amenities like full kitchens and European-style laundry units. Recent travelers also appreciate the suites' Adirondack-style accents, custom-designed pillows and private balconies overlooking the surrounding mountain landscape. The culinary offerings available at KANU dining room and lounge, as well as the shakes and swirls available at the Old Fashion Ice Cream Parlor, receive high praise from previous visitors as well, though others caution that high-season rates are pricey.

Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa
    Lake Placid, NY
    4-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 1323 reviewsTripAdvisor (1323)
    Free Parking

Overlooking Lake Placid's main street from a hilltop perch, the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa has been an Adirondack mainstay since 1883. The resort is filled with exposed wooden beams and cozy fireplaces reminiscent of the lodges of yesteryear, but Mirror Lake is still catching up to the times. Accommodations are outfitted with wooden furniture, vaulted ceilings and expansive windows that offer views of Mirror Lake and the surrounding mountains – and recent visitors say the panoramas are stunning. However, those looking to stay connected to the world bemoaned having to pay extra for Wi-Fi access. When it's time for some R&R outside your digs, head to the spa for a massage or body scrub, or take a dip in the hot tub. Aside from its location and ample on-site amenities, travelers also praise the delectable culinary offerings available at The View, Taste Bistro & Bar and The Cottage.

Perched on Green Island in Bolton Landing, New York, The Sagamore caters to families with its plentiful lodging options. Recent guests recommend kid-friendly amenities like the seasonal Sagamore Kids Club and The Rec, an all-ages activity center with Nintendo Wii and Xbox stations, arcade games and even an indoor mini-golf course. And the Lake George waterfront activities – like kayaking, canoeing and fishing – are popular pastimes, as well. After participating in outdoor pursuits, you can retreat to one of the resort's eight on-site eateries. Although recent guests concede the meals here are pricey, they say they're well worth the cost, citing top-notch service and delicious bites. And while past visitors loved the ample on-site activities, many noted that the rooms are in need of a facelift.

Recent guests said they felt like royalty while staying at The Mansion on Delaware Avenue thanks to the incredible service provided by the property's butlers. Visitors said the butlers were attentive and quick to offer recommendations for things to do and places to eat. What's more, the hotel offers a butler-driven Land Rover that transports travelers within a 3-mile radius of the property. The Mansion's 28 accommodations were another source of praise for reviewers, who appreciated the historic hotel's contemporary amenities, such as whirlpool baths, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, fitness studio access and, in the select rooms and suites, fireplaces. Though the hotel doesn't have an on-site restaurant, it does offer a continental breakfast each morning and complimentary evening cocktails. Plus, with its location in Allentown, a historic neighborhood north of downtown Buffalo, the hotel offers a well-placed home base for exploring local restaurants and bars. And though the property is historic (it was built in 1869), it doesn't show its age, according to reviewers.

Built in 1874, The Garden City Hotel exudes an Old World glamour that many recent visitors (and particularly brides) love. Elegant white marble encases the lobby, while a rich color palette of golds, reds and browns maintains a sophisticated atmosphere. Plus, the hotel underwent a renovation in 2014 that completely gutted and refurbished all the rooms, as well as the spa, salon and pool areas. Visitors say the new decor and furnishings are impressive, praising the comfortable beds with pillow-top mattresses and amenities like Keurig coffee makers, 42-inch flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi access. And travelers are equally as impressed with the gracious front desk and concierge staff, who they say go above and beyond to provide attentive and pleasant service. Another hit: Polo Steakhouse, an eatery that dishes up inventive American fare. You'll find this hotel on Seventh Street in Garden City, New York, right across from the Garden City Long Island Rail Road station.

According to some recent guests, this resort-casino megaplex – run by the Oneida American Indian tribe – easily rivals some of the sprawling properties in Las Vegas. Rather than in Vegas, you'll find Turning Stone in Verona, New York, on Patrick Road, just off of State Route 365. The casino has plenty of gaming options (penny slots, blackjack and Texas Hold'em, to name a few), and there are even more amenities, such as a full-service spa and multiple dining venues, to keep you occupied. The Lodge offers suites, which come appointed with soaking tubs, glass-enclosed showers and floor-to-ceiling windows, to note a few amenities. But while most previous visitors report a satisfactory stay overall, some do lament that the prices of drinks and meals here are a bit hard to swallow.

The Mirbeau has a French aesthetic, taking its design cues from the Old World wine country. Stone turrets adorn the main inn, while four cheery yellow cottages cluster around the pond. The gardens are also reminiscent of France, modeled after Claude Monet's infamous gardens at Giverny. Naturally, the Mirbeau is a favorite with couples thanks to top-notch amenities like the 14,000-square-foot spa and its various treatments. (Some do note, though, that services can be rather pricey.) Recent guests also say that the accommodations are charming, with cozy fireplaces and oversized soaking tubs. Previous visitors compliment the cuisine served in the Dining Room and the Aqua Terrace, as well the extensive selection at the Wine Bar. You'll find the Mirbeau Inn & Spa on West Genesee Street Road, just west of downtown Skaneateles, New York, in the Finger Lakes region.

This hotel's name says it all. Situated in Tarrytown, New York, this unique lodging is literally a castle perched on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River. Constructed in 1910, the original building echoes the Norman castles of the British Isles, with epic stone walls and turrets, as well as wood paneling said to have belonged to King James II of England. And while this hotel's exterior exudes an Old World charm, the accommodations are updated with luxurious 21st century conveniences, including Tivoli Radio & Bose Sound systems, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, goose-down bed spreads and even fireplaces (in some rooms). The customer service, though, receives mixed reviews: Some recent guests said that they felt like royalty during their stay, while others said that staff seemed confused and could benefit from some additional training. Once you settle in, head to Equus restaurant, the hotel's intimate dining venue, which has both Zagat and recent patrons singing its praises.

The Gideon Putnam resort has served as an upstate New York hideaway for more than 75 years. Tucked inside Saratoga Spa State Park in Saratoga Springs, the property is chock-full of outdoor activities: Cross-country skiing is popular in the winter and hiking takes over in the warmer months. And then there's the legendary Roosevelt Baths & Spa, a popular R&R hot spot since the 1930s. In keeping with the renowned regional pastime (mineral baths have drawn visitors to Saratoga Springs since the mid-1800s), the spa features cold and warm mineral water treatments as well as massage services. Recent guests suggest exploring the grounds before retiring to the high-end accommodations, which feature calming neutral tones and upscale amenities, such as plush bedding and lavish bath products. In addition to the luxurious accommodations, recent visitors praise the courteous and helpful hotel staff. The only downside, according to a few previous visitors, is that the rooms are a bit outdated and could use a facelift.
