Unimpressive staff

Aug 12th, 2019

I will not stay at AC again. The staff from the front desk to the valet was the rudest staff I’ve encountered at a Marriott owned property. I stay at Marriott’s at least 75 nights a year and this ranked up there with one of the worst hotel customer service experience I’ve had. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Poor design, weak service

Aug 11th, 2019

Not as bad as Aloft, but another example where an effort at hip design yields uncomfortable results, in this case made worse by poor service. Room was quiet, bed was comfy, climate control worked well, but there’s not much more to say on the plus side. Design: a lobby and “bar” area full of streamline, sleek, uninviting, hard seats. In the room, faux wood (real plastic) flooring rather than carpet, resulting in loud, harsh acoustics. A frosted but translucent sliding glass bathroom door that floods the room with light if you or your partner get up to use the bathroom in the night. One tiny hook, and one small shower door handle on which to hang towels, despite large expanses of empty bathroom wall, and the usual corporate exhortation to be green. In our room, the bracket that holds the hand-held shower head was broken, causing the shower head to dangle uselessly — which housekeeping had attempted to hide by turning the shower head around to face, and flop into, the wall, rather than actually getting it fixed. Service. Room was not made up until after 5 p.m. one day, and not made up at all the next, even though the front desk assured us, when we inquired as we left the hotel at 5:15, that housekeeping was just running late, without even asking us our room number to make sure. Such a letdown to return to your room as we did on the first day in the late afternoon, or, much worse, after dinner as we did on the second day, and it still hasn’t been cleaned. Stayed a weekend, and had a reservation to return late the following week after a few days on the coast. We’ve canceled that reservation, very confident we can do better elsewhere. Exceeded our expectations

Aug 6th, 2019

We are loyal Marriott members, but this was our first time staying at an AC and we were pleasantly surprised. The staff were very accommodating at check-in and throughout our stay. It was a special occasion and they honored our request for a room upgrade. River view and larger layout. Requests for extra towels and other minor necessities were fulfilled in an expedient and courteous manner. Lobby is very welcoming and spotless. Bar is beautiful, well-stocked, and drew a pleasant evening crowd. Fitness room is clean and well equipped. Breakfast is not free, but was one of the best breakfasts we had under $20 while in Portland. Based on our experience, the AC line is our new go-to. Please, don’t change a thing. Nice Hotel in a Great Area of Downtown Portland

Aug 5th, 2019

This is the first AC Hotel I've tried from the Marriott brand, and it was okay. I think - like so many other hotel companies that have SO MANY brands - it's hard to differentiate a limited service hotel from so many other limited service hotels. We got right into our room about 30 minutes before check-in, which was nice. We looked directly into a construction zone, but fortunately it was the weekend. We are Marriott Gold Preferred, so I'm guessing we were upgraded although it wasn't mentioned at check-in. The room was comfortable enough, although the flooring (which upon first glance looks like luxury vinyl plank) was apparently roll-flooring and had a number of very noticeable ripples in it. Wow! That was unexpected and terrible - I kept thinking I would trip! The restaurant is pretty limited in what it puts out and the pricing is expensive - especially for Portland. 2 Drip Coffees and 2 "donuts" served from the Slab Coffee Bar was about $20! Then there's the parking: Valet parking for $45/night. Yes, you have in-and-out privileges, but you'll wait 15 to 20 minutes for your vehicle - so plan ahead! I freely admit, I'm used to higher end properties, but it's fun to try the new, trendy properties. This one was fine, although I think what you're saving in room cost, they're making up for in lots of other ways. Future stays will probably be at a more traditional full-service hotel, like a Westin or a Provenance property. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Lovely Hotel in the Old Port section of Portland

Aug 4th, 2019

Very nice hotel, lovely staff and as always my coffee station all day. Would stay here again, there is a daily parking fee which I’m not used to but there’s limited parking in the area. Lots of restaurants nearby, take a boat ride on the Casio Bay Lines, very fun, bring a sweatshirt. Visit the Portland Headlight at Fort McHenry, drive down to Ogunquit and walk Marginal Way to Perkins Cove (;or vice versa). Go to Kennebunkport eat at Arundle Wharf rf or The Clam Shack.
