Dog-friendly hotel; tasty on-site restaurant
Location near Madison Square Garden comes with noise
Despite the Manhattan NYC's convenient Seventh Avenue location in Chelsea, many recent guests of the Madison Square Garden-adjacent hotel find the accommodations and overall experience just mediocre. Many lodgers say that the rooms are not well-lit and don't protect light sleepers from the din of passing concertgoers and sports fans. If you can handle the noise level, you'll find the 614 guest rooms and suites complete with flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations and a Dream Pillow Menu. And if you have a furry friend in tow, your pet will be welcomed ($50 surcharge applies) or even pampered with toys, treats and pet beds. Human treats can be found at Niles Restaurant & Bar, which serves up continental cuisine like portobello mushroom risotto and pretzel-crusted chicken.

An official hotel of the Westminster Dog Show, [the] Manhattan was host to the best-in-show winner two years in a row and they have a suite available to the show dogs with puppy treadmills, treats and more during the show.

Rooms come in a variety of sizes, from full suites with real kitchens to smaller rooms, but even these are larger than you’ll normally get in NYC. And they’re pretty, too, with a wall-paper of giant gray and white flowers and a little stuffed monkey to greet you on your white duvet.

Built in 1929, the 28-floor hotel is filled with dramatic, eye-catching details. In the lobby, eight gold-plated elevators line a wall bedecked with candelabra sconces.

Location & Parking

Steps from Madison Square Garden and Penn Station, Manhattan NYC's Chelsea location is home to many other hotels but not as many restaurant options. Still, the neighborhood has plenty to offer – swanky art galleries, trendy bars and old warehouses turned into loft apartments; there's plenty of culture to be had. This hotel is further afield from many area tourist locations (Times Square is about half a mile north and Sak's flagship Fifth Avenue location is about a mile and a half north); but if you're in town for a concert or sporting event, this is an excellent and stylish option.
  • Nearby access to High Line (an elevated former train line converted into a walking path that affords city views without the traffic) via the 30th Street entrance
  • Multiple subway and bus lines within a three-block radius; across the street from Penn Station
  • 24-hour valet parking ($55 to $65)

Niles Restaurant & Bar serves contemporary American cuisine from its white-walled and white-floored modern space just off the hotels lobby. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus brunch on the weekends. • Complimentary wine hour in the lobby from 5 to 6 p.m. for all guests 21 and older
  • Room service from the restaurant is available from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m.
  • The Corner Store in the lobby acts as a big minibar with souvenirs and sundries
