Oldtown Flair

Mar 15th, 2020

Creaking boards, antique furniture, interesting photos and paintings all throughout - if you want to have a true old-world experience this is the place to stay. No, not all fixtures are up-to-date but we found our room clean, the bathroom spotless and recently renovated and the bed was comfy enough. The breakfast buffet is excellent, although I am not a fan of all guests having to use the same coffee machine. Could make for some waiting time in case the hotel is fully booked. You really can't beat the location! It is a quiet street, but just 2-3 minutes to walk to Mozart Square or the furnicular to the fortress. Plenty of restaurants and bars in the neighborhood. Easy to reach by bus from the train station (stop Mozartsteg). Really unique is the movie theater with two rooms. One of them features the ruins of a Roman temple. So not only are you in probably the world's oldest running cinema, you are also at a place where people worshipped almost 2.000 years ago. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Vortex in our room

Mar 8th, 2020

We had a wonderful stay in this hotel, and had a room with the slanted window on the ceiling with a view of the castle, as well as an upstairs. I wish I could remember the number of our room, because we found it has a VORTEX. My husband and I experienced a vortex during a visit to Sedona, and know how it feels. So it was incredibly special and surprising to find an even stronger vortex upon entering our room. We discovered it almost immediately. The first time I entered the room, I felt dizzy. The second time, I felt dizzy again, at the same exact spot. When it happened a third time, I turned to my husband, who also looked at me, surprised. I said, "did you feel that?" and he said yes. We sat down right there at the entryway and closed our eyes. Then, we described to each other what we were feeling - the energy entering one way and exiting another way in our bodies. We both realized then that we were definitely feeling the same energy / force, and compared it to the vortex we felt in Sedona. Of course, we are not sure exactly what it is. I mean, the hotel is hundreds of years old - it could be something else. But if you happen to stay here, ask for the room (I believe it was on the 4th floor) with the stairs on the right side as you enter, the bathroom is on the left, and the upstairs patio looks towards the mountains, away from the castle. Another quick note - I wish they had some sort of curtain or blinds that could be drawn to block out the ceiling window in the morning. It gets so bright and the window is directly above the bed, so you are squinting in the bed. Also - the breakfast is wonderful here, and the ladies who make the food and service the tables are extremely hard working. We tipped them on our last day. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Nice location

Feb 20th, 2020

The hotel has a very good central location in Salzburg and the staff is helpfull. I will not return, primarily because of the beds and the cleaning. It feels like the mattress, pillow and duvet is from when the hotel started - extremely uncomfortable. Cleaning - You do not want to find other guests tooth picks and other items that the cleaning hasn't found, and observe that the bedtable hasn't been cleaned after the last guest. You should remove masking tape from your last renovation. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Good location, friendly service

Feb 16th, 2020

Excellent location. Nice and friendly service. Parking possibility is a big plus side. Rooms are clean enough and beds good, being an old building rooms are a bit odd shaped and could use some renovation and upgrade. Over all anyhow very good value for the money TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Good, could be great

Dec 27th, 2019

I can see why many reviews rate this hotel poorly. Upon entering, the place looks really nice, with pleasing aesthetics and clean. But then you start the check-in process with a man who comes off extremely brusque/gruff. As I approached the reception desk there was a man and a younger woman. The woman pointed to the man with a look on her face that more or less said "good luck." I was immediately told to wait a minute, after which the guy had me complete the obligatory paperwork, gave me my room key (not so much handed it to me as nearly tossed it on the counter), then explained how breakfast worked and the directions to my room. He then paused and asked me about how Christmas works in my country (I was staying at the hotel December 22-26). It was at this point that it occurred to me the guy isn't necessarily rude, it's simply his mannerisms / who he is and he comes off as completely indifferent to your patronage of the hotel. In the end, after realizing this, I brushed aside his rather impersonal personality, chatted for a minute or so with him about Christmas, then went to my room. Take that for what it's worth. I think if you prepare yourself with this expectation you want be caught off-guard and think you're being treated negatively. On a similar note, upon check-out I dealt with a different younger woman I'd not seen before and she could certainly learn to smile. Not rude, but no personal skills whatsoever. She wanted to be done with me as a customer as soon as possible. Of the 4 or 5 people I saw behind the reception desk during my four night stay I only ever saw/heard one guy who smiled and was friendly to guests. Anyway, I stayed in one of the suites (S3) and it was so cool (see the few attached pictures). The ceiling artwork was neat, and the old antique heater was terrific looking (it doesn't work though; heat comes from somewhere else). The old floorboards, many of which squeaked (I liked that they did - gave an even older feel to the room) added to the aged feel of the room (as in, the room felt as if you were in an older era). The bathtub was huge! And it had jets. Noise wasn't really a problem, but do note that the room is along the street (one floor above) and you will hear people late at night (mostly drunks) as well as garbage and delivery trucks early in the morning. This didn't bother me so much, but you can certainly hear it. Wi-Fi worked fine in the room. Breakfast. There are many tables but I arrived usually between 745-815 and it wasn't long before all tables were filled. The area in which you get food can be a little cramped, as others have stated, though this isn't really a problem. Let me tell you what is a problem and why I rated this hotel only a Very Good instead of Excellent. The dishes were never entirely clean. Every single morning I had to work through bowels until I could find a clean one. Same with my silverware. I mean literal food still on some of them. One morning I stood there and looked at five different bowels until I found a clean one. Not just leftover film from what is clearly a dishwasher that performs poorly, but food stuck to the bowels. One of the waitresses stood right next to me as I went through all five bowels, after which point she took all of them away to have them cleaned... This happened every morning! So, be forewarned - examine closely ALL of your dishes. This hotel needs to invest in an efficient dishwasher. That said, the food itself tasted OK. Decent selection of standard European breakfast foods: cereals, breads (plus a toaster), eggs, meats, cheeses, orange juice, water, tea, coffee machine, fruits.... I didn't see any films in the attached kino (move theater). I did try the Italian restaurant that's connected to the hotel and I can say the pizza was quite good. Location is also quite good, with several restaurants and shops in the immediate vicinity. Less than a 5 minute walk to the center of the old town or to the Festungsbahn (funicular) I cannot comment on parking as I didn't use a car, though I believe there is parking at the hotel. All in all a very nice hotel, but with some minor things that can be improved; in particular, customer service training and a new/better dishwasher... TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
