Tropical Holiday but the small things matter

Jul 22nd, 2019

Overall great resort, ability to travel across to sister resort and share their services, activities and restaurants is a great benefit. The pontoon boat runs from Anantara Veli to Dhigu. I feel little things make the difference so only 4 stars rather than 5. Perhaps I've been spoilt by Asian service and experience but Anantara Veli Maldives does not come close to Thai or Vietnam 5 star services. The whole Maldives experience was a little "fake" and "manufactured" with staff often staying on really built-up and developed islands while tourist were let to stay on purpose built manufactured 'perfect' islands. Would go Asia next time instead of Maldives for natural tropical beauty, but still good to experience the Maldives once in a lifetime. THE GOOD: We had a "deluxe" overwater bungalow which I would recommend unless you have a bit more cash for an overwater bungalow "with pool". Get the deluxe rather than a standard as it gets you a bit more space between villas and ensures you have a "proper" overwater bungalow. Some of the standard overwater bungalows are very close to the beach and one another some could be more over beach than overwater as other reviewers have experienced. I don't particularly like Sushi but went to the Japanese restaurant at Anantara Veli for my wife however I was surprised by the 'Origami' restaurant. We decided upon 6 course teppanyaki menu which I'd recommend to anyone! The cooking, chef and food were exceptional. Everything just melted in your mouth. We also tried the "Sake Testing" option form the drinks menu so my wife got 3 different sakes cold, while I got the same 3 sakes hot (30 USD). Having never experienced Sake before it was superb, while staff were excellent at explaining everything on the menu to help us. Having now arrived home we will certainly be purchasing some 'Umeshu' Plum Sake which was gorgeous and sweet. Don't be put off that there ae not many people dining at this restaurant! You must go and you must order the teppanyaki menu. It is not cheap so stash away 300-400 USD for 2 people but you only go to the Maldives a few times in a life time so why not experience something great! Staff don't always make clear at Anantara Veli there are FREE activities you get included: (1) free snorkel and flippers for each person; (2) 2 hours free Kayak each day; (3) free outdoor cinema for all every Saturday evening. Breakfast buffet at Anantara Veli was superb!! They have a cooked section where you can order anything bespoke and fresh while there are the normal English elements such as sausages, bacon, baked beans and freshly cooked eggs. They have pancakes and waffle station, pastry isle, excellent breads and around 8-10 different flavour jam and honey. This is on top of yogurt, juices and salads plus Thai elements. The mid-week evening buffet at Fushi on Dhigu was great and we recommend the burger grill and the Wagu Beef Burger!! THE BAD: Communication between staff was lacking. One staff member would say one thing, another would tell you something else, and another the opposite. For example, when leaving early morning on Sunday reception staff said although breakfast starts at 7:00am it would be fine to go over early and gets some breakfast before our 7:10am boat back to Male. Upon dropping our key off the following morning at 6:40am the reception staff told us there was no breakfast buffet until 7:00am. After a conversation and then a phone call we eventually got breakfast in the form of some pastries, fruit and cereal. Nice breakfast but these little things and mis-communications make a difference. The evening singer at 73 Degree Bar and Restaurant on Anantara Veli was great but staff would move all the chairs and tables in this room and line them all up facing the singer like a school room. It was a little off putting and certainly stopped us from sitting in the room, instead sitting at the bar with only a partial view. To make people feel more comfortable in enjoying the singer, but still having some privacy they should think about leaving chairs in small groups around tables and people can move them to face the singer if they so wish. Water Sports Activities are run by Aqua Fanatics on each island for Anantara. I booked Turtle Snorkeling, Dolphin Quest and a Sunset Cruise. Now we visited in rainy season and we had to check each day whether these activities were going to happen due to weather conditions and there having to be "4 or more people" on each trip before they will make it happen. I have no problem with that as we cannot change the weather. After checking several days about the Dophin Quest we were told that there had to be more than 4 people and we were the only 2. However, come Saturday there were enough people to do it, great! Having turned up for the activity we found there were over 25 people doing it! A little strange that everyone wanted to do it on this day? No. It came to light very quickly that customers at Anantara Veli and Dhigu had been asking all week to do a trip and Aqua Fanatics were telling everyone the same story so they could then take us all out on Saturday with a "Full Boat". We found this very disingenuous and in truth ruined the trip as there were so many people. If staff had told us that the boat only goes out when full that would be fine, but instead they lied about it. We pre-booked a Traditional Dhoni Sunset Cruise again through Aqua Fanatics. It got cancelled due to weather then re-planned for Saturday which was fine. However the lady at Aqua Fanatics said it will be lovely as it is on a Traditional Dhoni and she said the resorts Dhoni was actually one of the better boats across the Maldives. We were really looking forward to it... Then as we came up to the pier on the day, one of Aqua Fanatics staff pointed out a modern plastic activities boat - and said that's what they've arranged for us. With some surprise we boarded and asked again, is this a traditional Dhoni while staff told us 'oh yes'. Staff then said we have champagne on the boat for you. We went out on the boat and staff were excellent. However, the bottle of bubbly was not Champagne but a cheaper Prosecco. Again, I don't mind a the drink was lovely and I understand they need to save money somewhere, but these little things add up. Why not tell us it is Prosecco on board? Having finished the trip I looked a traditional Dhoni up in the internet and clearly it is an old style wooden Maldivian boat, which was not what we experienced. Yet again, if someone had told us it would be a plastic standard boat cruise I'd be fine, but when you expect one thing and get another it is not fair to expect customers to be happy. I complained about this at check-out and staff told me how their traditional Dhoni was being refurbished which none of the Aqua Fanatics staff had told me! I was given a 25% discount off the cost and was more than happy with this resolution. But all these little things add up. When booking the Japanese Restaurant we were told about the Teppanyaki menu and how you see the Chef cook right in front of you.. so we booked and although the food was lovely the staff sat us at a beach table rather than the food bar so we saw no live theatre or cooking. I certainly recommend eating here but ask them to seat you at the food bar so you see the Chef at work and flames coming up! At every stage staff "just ask if you want anything, we're here to help". But we found staff were somewhat lacking in service. Instead of laying out the sun deck furniture at Anantraa Veli they had it all stacked to one corner. Now I can understand if there is bad weather but I'd have staff put it out each day for customers to use, but this never happened so all costumers had to squeeze into two small bar rooms at the 73 Degree Bar. I then asked staff to set-up two chairs and padding which they willingly did for us, but everyone else was still left inside behind plastic rain covers even though the weather was lovely. Think this is just where management is lacking. With good management these details would not happen and everything would be smooth. Customers don't want to ask for furniture to be set-up and put in place. It should just be there for them to use. When we arrived we had an arrival photo taken at Anantara Veli but we have no idea what happened with it. We were not told anything about it and were never given the opportunity to see or buy it. It would have been nice to see our options... At the end of the day it was a good resort with lots of options but just don't expect faultless 5 star service and experience, it's more 4 star and bordering on 5 in places. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

relaxing

I would return to this resort and recommend others to visit. The rooms are reasonably priced, however food is extremely expensive, so getting a full board may be of benefit. Most staff are very friendly and they all accommodate requests as required. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Birthday getaway

Jul 20th, 2019

Everything is excellent except for my friend's stuff got lost and we did not receive any feedback from Anantara. Anantara entertained my special request because it was my friends birthday. Free cake, room decor and sparkling wine. Our butler is accommodating and he ensures that we get the best service. Staff are courteous and polite. Rooms are well maintained. Tip: Must visit Picnic Island. Take Pontoon from Veli to Dhigu and Dhigu to Picnic island. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
