Amazing Trip!

May 21st, 2019

My husband and I visited Curacao for my 35th birthday and stayed at the Avila Beach Hotel. We had a crazy flight delay and ended up missing our connection in Miami so we arrived a day later than expected. The folks at Avila were on the ball and rescheduled our airport transfer for the following day. Once we arrived we were greeted at the airport by the transport folks, and once we got to the hotel we were welcomed with a cold drink. We stayed in the Blues Wing and our room was fantastic. We were the last room on the end on the second floor directly over the ocean. Views were to die for. The room was clean and decorated well. When we arrived we went right to the bar and had some snacks before dinner, we made reservations right there at the bar for the Blues restaurant. They had live jazz and it was amazing, the stage was right above the bar area. The food was good too. Every morning there's a full breakfast spread with omelette station, fruits, breads, pastries, etc. It was included with our room when we booked and very good. I would suggest booking directly with the hotel so you get perks like free breakfast. During the week we were there it seems people would claim the shaded beach huts before 9:30 am so if that's important to you no sleeping in! There was a wedding and a conference there at the time and it cleared out later in the week. You could always find spots at the beach, they just might not be shaded. We didn't really use the pool too much but it was nice with and infinity edge. The beach was lovely with calm water even though it was quite windy while we were there. The hotel is walking distance to Otrobanda, the floating bridge (really cool when it opens), and Punda. We walked over and had lunch at Gouverneur de Rouville where I had a great goat stew. We also visited the Kura Hulanda Museum. There are several restaurants right outside the hotel. We tried Restaurant Fishalicious and Rozendaels Original Cuisine. Both were good but we loved Rozendaels. I would suggest making a reservation as they got really crowded. We rented a car at the Budget desk at the hotel and drove to Playa Porto Mari which was AMAZING. We got there around 9:30am and got a shaded spot right in front of the ocean. The water there is so crystal clear blue and the snorkeling is fantastic. There's a restaurant and bar right on the beach which made it really convenient to stay all day. You can rent regular and full face snorkels, and the bathrooms were clean. We also saw some wild pigs. On my birthday when we got back to our room after being at the beach all day we were pleasantly surprised to find a nice card and a bottle of sauvignon blanc (my favorite wine). We also had a dinner on the beach scheduled which was nice. There was a wedding going on at the restaurant so we had a prime view for that and nice music. Most of the people at the hotel are Dutch. We had great conversations with other visitors and everyone was so nice. One negative is that smoking is allowed at restaurants, but it wasn't too bad since it's all outdoors. All of the staff, especially the bartenders were extremely friendly. We were so sad to leave but the checkout process was smooth and the airport transfer was there right on time. We got stuck in Miami again on the way back but I was so relaxed I didn't mind. Curacao is dushi, we loved it! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful location, but not perfect for us

May 14th, 2019

Pros - water is clear and enjoyable to swim in. No jellyfish or other creatures floating around. No gross seaweed touching your legs. - great to be able to walk right out of your room and onto the private beach - close (enough) walk to Willemstad - staff is generally friendly - very quiet, great for families - the grounds are sprayed with bug spray every morning at 5am. This woke some of us up however it was lovely to not get one mosquito bite my entire trip. Cons - lots of older people and families with babies. As a group of 5 girlfriends, it was not ideal for us - the drinks at the beach bar are extremely weak. I asked over and over for extra alcohol in my cocktails and offered to pay an extra price for it, and no one seemed to understand or deliver. - there is no beach service as far as drinks go, you have to walk to the bar to get it yourself. - pool closes at 6pm. we got kicked out swimming at 8pm and were told they were getting noise complaints. I mean... 8pm. - no room service. If you want a real coffee that’s not one of those pods that they put in your room, you have to walk to the breakfast area yourself as no one will deliver one to you. - our bathrooms stunk like sewage backup and people kept having to come fix it (we got 1 free breakfast for each of us because of it) - the spa facilities are outdated. If you get a massage, be warned that at the end, the woman will just walk away and not tell you your massage is over. You’ll be left on the bed wondering if she’s coming back until ten minutes passes and you eventually decide she’s not... General Tips - I do not have very wild friends (we’re 30, not 20) however Avila was still way to calm and filled with rules for us - we stayed here because it’s supposed to be the nicest resort on the island. We chose it because last year my friends and i roughed it at an eco lodge in Colombia. This year, we wanted to be catered to- we had a great time but sadly we did not get the full treatment we were hoping for. - although the private beach is clean it is not the most beautiful on the island. You have to go to the other end of the island which is about a 45min to 1hr drive. It is best to rent a car, taxis are expensive and once you get there you’ll want to hop around to other beaches and maybe get lunch - the photos you see of all the beautiful colorful buildings in Willemstad are very tailored to show you what you want to see... in reality, an adorable colorful house is right next to a completely bombed out, dilapidated one. I have no issue with this, but it’s something to be aware of TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Perfect Getaway!

May 12th, 2019

The service was amazing. All of the people at the hotel where wonderful as far as helping us with any problems or recommendations. I would definitely recommend anyone come here to stay if they are going to stay in Curacao. If we come back again to this island we will definitely try to book a room in Avilla hotel again. Beautiful hotel and great experience

May 12th, 2019

Avila is absolutely beautiful and worth visiting. We stayed in the two bedroom apartment and it was beyond our expectations, the apartment was massive and very up to date. The balcony was massive and even had an ocean view. The hotel is very calm and relaxing meaning there isn’t much to do in the evening. The beaches they offer are incredible and perfect for hanging out!! The food is very good at the hotel, I really have nothing to complain about. Great experience!! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Very nice experience

May 11th, 2019

The front desk staff were fabulous at check in as well as check out. I stayed in the oceanfront Blues wing and loved the room. Everything was very clean, and the room had a cute little deck right at the ocean. Only negative in the room is that there isn't adequate lighting in the bathroom to apply make-up, nor is there an adequate outlet to plug in hairstyling tools. Lovely thick towels, good water pressure and hot water. Very comfortable bed and the room was perfectly quiet. A special mention for bartender Elvis, whom was truly wonderful. Most of the staff was quite friendly. Great breakfast buffet. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
