Mostly fantastic location

Spent a few days here at recommendation of a friend. Was looking for an ocean getaway since other things are cancelled with COVID. Pluses: The rooms and bathrooms are spacious and nicely appointed. Balcony view over the marina is a must! The yacht activity is interesting. The food at A&O Kitchen was very good and we ate here nearly every meal. Interesting cocktails, though could use a more extensive wine by the glass menu plus the QR menus were missing the wine lists by the glass. Breakfast only on Fri-Sun at this time. There is Blend Cafe with breakfast items and coffee drinks, etc. to go. We had a few maintenance and service issues, which the staff responded to well! Kudos for that. The pool is nice for lap swimming with comfortable lounge chairs, bar and food services. Partially shaded by building, so you are either in the sun or not. Hard to find that right balance. The hotel used now-standard COVID protocols with masks in public areas, hand gel, signs to limit elevator capacity, etc. etc. Housekeeping is paused daily but will deliver and pick up towels, glasses, trash, etc. Also nice is renting a Duffy Boat at the adjoining Bay Club. (Reserve in advance for weekends). My only gripe that left a bad taste in my mouth was patrons vaping on the outdoor restaurant patio, despite a sign stating no smoking or vaping of any type is permitted. (Note: Fri-Sun nights at A&O is quite the party scene; both entertaining an annoying depending on your perspective). With the vaping, we did tell a staff member who told me what I wanted to hear and waltzed over to the general vicinity. However, someone kept on vaping in clear eye line of this staff member, and was not approached. Not only is this bad in general, but during a pandemic, more and more of your potential "droplets" are being forced onto other patrons. Despite being outdoors, it is still a restaurant, so a no-go and stated as such. The lack of attention to enforcement was disturbing. The party patrons did not seem very concerned about COVID cautions. Since it was loud, people were in each others faces talking, hugging, close proximity, etc. like the good ol' days. Also concerning was a server (who was wearing a mask) was hugging and high-fiving patrons who are not wearing masks. It appears to be a "Cheers" and close knit community type of place. Other note: The beach part of Newport Beach is about a 45 min. walk since you can't take a "crow fly" path. The hotel does have a shuttle car which you can book for trips to restaurants or beach and possibly airport if needed. Just reserve in advance. That was a huge plus. We did use Uber once, but it took a while to get a car. Despite the vaping issue, I would still go back to this hotel. I hope the hotel works on this issue. The pluses outweigh the negative. Best birthday stay ever!

Balboa Bay Resort met every expectation and and more. The staff is extremely kind and quick with their service. The food was amazing at A+O. All the tables were spread out..and they had a dj. It was a nice ambience. The hotel did make us wait 10 mins for our room (not a big deal) but they comp our dinner which was so nice!!Their customer service is amazing! The rooms are excellent and spacious. Everything was very clean and people were following the rules with social distancing and masks. It felt very safe. This was one of they best birthdays ever and a big part of that was because of the hotel experience. I also had a private boat pick me up from the docks of the hotel. They were very accommodating. I left last night! Thank you !!!! It was an amazing stay. Isaiah was so so helpful, and i had no problems with the WiFi which was an important part of my stay given the test i was taking. Also mask requirements were reasonable and everything felt safe!!! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

There were so many issues with our stay that its hard to pinpoint just one that stood out. I noticed that all bad commentary on this website is met with Tim the hotel's manager rudely responding making it sound like it was all the guest's fault, so I'm expecting to receive the same rude response by my commentary. We tried to have an enjoyable family reunion for my mom's 75th birthday. I called two weeks ahead to reserve a table at A&O restaurant where we received a table that looked like old patio furniture that was pushed against the wall of the hotel. It was literally the worst table you could received at the restaurant. While the adults were at the restaurant, our children had pizza in one of the hotel rooms where we received a complaint at 7pm at night that they were being too loud. It's funny that this hotel that blares vibrant club music form their restaurant does not seem to tolerate any noise from any of their rooms (we also received a visit from security when were sleeping saying were were being too loud.) Not sure if they had a funny crank caller in the hotel that weekend or what was happening. They placed my 75 year old mom in the "members" only part of the hotel and promptly told her was not allowed to use the grass area, beach area or pool area that were just steps from her room. We had all pitched in to ensure she received one of the best rooms in the hotel - we were sorely mistaken. If she wanted to use any of the hotel's amenities, she would need to walk across the car entry way, through the front lobby to access any of them. There was no enforcement of guests wearing masks in the hotel at all. Upon our arrival there were people hanging out in the lobby with no masks on and this went on during our entire stay. Honestly, if you are having a special get together do no rely on this hotel to make it special. This is just not their speciality. This is a place for a quick get-in and get-out weekend. You could spend a lot less money to receive the same service - it just would not be on the water. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Stopped by for lunch and was served by Jose who was attentive and kind. He was a fantastic server and had great recommendations for us as regarding the food and drink. Beautiful setting and fantastic views of the various ships. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
