Fantastic Experience

Apr 18th, 2019

This was our first family trip to a Beaches resort and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Early April is evidently the short period between North American and European spring breaks so the resort was at a lower occupancy, which was great b/c it meant we didn't have to deal with large crowds everywhere we went. First off, the staff at the resort are absolutely fantastic and very friendly. They made a special effort to engage the kids every chance they got. The whole resort felt very family friendly and engaging, more so than just exchanging 'hello' like I've experienced at other places in the past. Everybody seemed to be more than eager to have a conversation with you (if you wanted to) and it just gave every day a welcoming feel. The food, also pretty great, even the buffet which is what most people complain about on resorts. I will say my favourite evening was our dinner at Kimonos, the Jamaican chefs put on a very entertaining show versus the seriousness I've experienced at other Teppanyaki restaurants. It is definitely a must visit (get your reservations in early!). I'd also like to point out that while you can get coffee at many places in the resort (including your room), if you are a fan of espresso drinks then make sure you hit up Cafe de Paris (opens at 6:30am if you are an early riser like me). Lastly, big shout out to our butlers (yes, we splurged for the butler service) Andre and Carla! Even though the resort was low occupancy and there wasn't much in the way of lineups, these two made everything so much simpler so we could just chill out and relax on the beach. When (yes, when) we go back we'll definitely be requesting these two again Lastly x 2, just want to also thank Adrian T for all his hospitality this week. Numerous times he'd just stop and chat while we were at the pool, or at a show, and talk to us and the kids and make sure everything was going great. Was just a really nice & friendly touch. Room tip: Definitely worth it to splurge and get a concierge/butler suite if you can, especially if the resort is busy. The time saved and ability to just relax is well worth the money if you can afford it. Butler level has reserved (shaded) seating on the beach all week, with a cooler of drinks, which is very nice as you don't have to get out early and stake out a spot. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Disappointing

Apr 18th, 2019

Lovely location and lots of facilities for children, however we were disappointed to find this Beaches to be run down and desperately in need of refurbishment and a deep clean. I believe some of the rooms have been refurbished, but sadly not ours. Clearly the work is ongoing as we were often treated to noisy building and drilling work very early in the morning. We paid to upgrade to a beach front concierge room. It was gloomy and outdated. Seriously peeling paint and very old fittings in the bathroom, plus an unwanted extra - a large hair ball of black hair - both my husband and I are blonde, so it's anyone's guess who that belonged to. It was finally removed after three days occupancy. One night we awoke at 2am to find the bathroom flooded, and the water lapping out into the bedroom, soaking the carpet under the bed. An hour of vaxing and bathroom maintenance ensued. Not a restful night! The telephone in the room only worked sporadically, and the instructions for use on it were out of date, causing me to miss a message from our rep. The door lock was a joke - constant trips back to the front desk to get the keys reset. It probably just needed a new battery or something, but no-one bothered. We did manage to negotiate a refund on the extra paid. Staff here were sometimes really cheerful, helpful and nice to be around, but some were surly almost to the point of rudeness. I've never encountered this anywhere else in the Caribbean, and was shocked. Service was extremely slow, which is not a problem usually on holiday, but our last lunch (baguettes) before our bus to the airport took an hour to arrive, and we couldn't finish it. The manager did apologise for this, saying that new management was in place, and he realised that there were issues to be addressed. The concierge service was polite and always available, but not always efficient. Three water sports bookings made through the Concierge for my grandsons were never passed on to the water sports team. Thankfully the team managed to fit them in. The food in the a la carte restaurants was good, but in the Mill buffet restaurant it was terrible. Sparse offerings with mostly empty food dishes, and not much variety. The food on the 'Gala Dinner' night was exactly the same as any other night! Most hotels make an effort for these nights, with exotic decorations, fruit carvings, special food and drinks etc, but not here. Finally, my age old beef with all 'luxury' resorts in the Caribbean. The no shorts policy for the a la carte restaurants is not enforced. Why have the policy at all? The men in our party stuck to the rules on our first booking, to find they were just about the only ones. They didn't bother after that. This resort is a blot on the Sandals name and we will not return. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Disappointing Stay

Apr 17th, 2019

We have recently completed a Saturday - Saturday vacation at Beaches Resort in Negril, Jamaica. As a family, we have been vacationing and enjoying Beaches Negril for close to 10 consecutive years. Our son has physical and cognitive disabilities and the familiarity, entertainment and safety of the resort bring us back every year. We have been willing to pay a substantial premium for their product, unfortunately, this year we did not receive value for that premium. There were several important issues that made last week’s vacation a disappointment. Our son looks forward to and talks often about the evening Sesame Street shows. During this vacation of seven nights, there were only two real shows provided with no explanation of the change provided. This was a significant disappointment to him and one that caused a great deal of anxiety for our entire family as we tried to explain what happened (we could not obtain a response from any of the staff why this was occurring.). The other issue was one of the areas that are important to him was blocked off for construction and inaccessible the entire time. The combination of these two issues, while they may seem minor to the reader, was incredibly impactful to our family and our son’s enjoyment of this trip. The staff could/would not provide explanations and deflected all questions. We are not confrontational by nature and even hesitated to write this review. Our vacation date was flexible, if we had known in advance of these issues we would have had the opportunity to make changes or adapt. On a personal level, we have always been quite satisfied with our rooms and have not sought upgrades. However, it was disappointing to hear from another first-time guest that they had received an upgrade to their room. We viewed this as the company not valuing the relationship with us as a long-time loyal guest. It is unfortunate that a decade long relationship between our family and this resort ends this way. I attempted to discuss with several staff members, most either could not or did not provide solutions and one was going to escalate my concerns however I was not contacted. Emails to head office were also not responded to. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Make vacation complete- find Janice!

Apr 17th, 2019

My family and I spent one week at Beaches Negril. Despite getting a base tan before coming here, we got burnt when parasailing. My daughter’s skin not only burned, but blistered badly. Janice (a bartender here) blended some fresh aloe vera and applied it to my daughter’s burnt shoulders. Then she checked back on us over the remainder of our days here. She felt more like a beloved family member than another staff member. The genuine care she showed to us was way beyond what we could have ever asked for. When we discovered she’d only worked here for 5 months, we were shocked because she was so FANTASTIC at her job! Beaches hit a home run in hiring Janice! LOVE her!!!! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
