Misfortunate Handling of Raining In Our Room, Unwelcoming Lobby, Terrible Beds, but Amazing Wine & Food at Thoroughbred

Aug 19th, 2019

We ventured to Charleston, in the heat of summer, for what we were hoping would be an experience to remember. An Experience to remember it was - a horrible one. Although this hotel has recently gone through a $30 million renovation - mattresses and sheets did not seem to be part of this CapEx. It was one of the most uncomfortable hotel beds that I have slept on in awhile. Additionally, there is nothing, but park benches in the Lobby to sit - so if you are getting in on an early flight, and if you would like a relaxing place to sit and plan your day - there isn't a place to just be. Stay Hack - Whatever you do - don't pay for a balcony - they aren't true balconies - simply Juliet balconies, and most importantly, our ceiling above the balcony started leaking - It was a pretty substantial leak. Additionally, every time we flushed the toilet, the toilet would leak a spray of water. We called down to be moved. We were told it would be 30 minutes. Then, after 3 hours and unable to stay in the room because it smelt like a basement, I went back to collect my things and called back down. We were told it would be 35 more minutes. At this point, we canceled our second night and booked The Dewberry - read my 5 star review about that hotel - it redeemed Charleston for us! The only saving grace for the Belmond is the Thoroughbred - it was delicious food, had a great selection of quality wines by the glass, and great service. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Excellent Location

Great hotel and customer service, centrally located and easily to walk to restaurants, excursions, etc. Charleston Grill was excellent as was its staff. Rooftop pool with retractable roof is nice getaway and offers a nice view of Charleston. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

A fine luxury hotel and priced like it

I was fortunate enough to attend a group business meeting from Sunday through Tuesday, with about 50 people or so in the group. The hotel was very nice for that sort of event. The facility has all the amenities you could want, in a great location. Was a nice change from the more well known brand name hotels. My room was on the 4th of 8 floors, overlooking the circular drive. The furnishings were conservative, and the bed was super comfortable. The bathroom was large and finished in an old style (I dont know of the marble like tiles are original or not). The towels were thick and absorbent. As with most older hotels a shortage of electrical outlets where you want them. Nice pool and spa on site, and located near many restaurants and one can put in a nice morning run or walk down to the battery waterfront area. Service was impeccable. I hit the pool after the meetings and showered, and when I got back from dinner the towel I had used had been replaced and the bed turned down. You don't get that at a conventional hotel. Also, our large group held one dinner and two lunches at the facility and the catering was quite good so they seem to have a competent kitchen. My only gripe was that I arrived at 3:00 and could not get a room until 4:00. I realize that housekeeping may be more intensive here than at a more mainstream hotel but I don't consider waiting for a room to be a luxury when you can walk into almost any other hotel in town at 1:00 and there will likely be a room available. The other issue is the price. The retail rates are $460 and up to a couple hundred dollars more per night. Our group rate was less than half that. At the group rate it was a terrific stay. At the full retail rate the value prospect may change. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

This place is billed as five star, but I didn’t get that treatment. The rooms are lovely and the location great, but the service is lacking. Staff don’t actively engage customers or treat them as special, yet that is often what makes a hotel special. They could not always basic questions about the surrounding area. No one went out of their way to make my stay a memorable one; even at checkout I was asked ‘how was your stay’ and after saying ‘disappointing’ no one was interested in ‘Why’. On top of average service, the cost of added extras (breakfast, dinner, laundry) was also too high. The service experience has for sure put me off staying at other Belmond properties.
