I say "3-Stars"

Feb 21st, 2020

This was our first trip to Blue Bay Grand Esmerelda. We had a good time, met many nice people from around the globe, and relaxed around the pool. I will just give you the pluses and minuses as I see them compared to the five other resorts that I've been to in this area. Pluses (+): Wait staff Cleaners Buildings and grounds are well kept for an older resort. Free Wi-Fi in room Minuses (-) No pool floats Guests reserving poolside chairs and never using them all day-No concierge at pool area to take care of this problem Some days, no poolside drink service No food service poolside No swim-up bar No spa area-massages were given in a hotel room without the ambience of a spa-like setting Food selections all week were repetitious All a la carte restaurants require non VIP members to get up at 7 am and reserve on the morning of. Most of the time only 9 pm seating available Some days clean towels missing from room Amenities like toilet paper and Kleenex missing Extra $6 charge for room service And the worst part was the rudeness of the front desk staff at both check-in and check-out. If these things don't bother you, you'll enjoy this resort. Unfortunately with all the other choices in this area we won't be going back. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Amazing staff and accommodation

Feb 21st, 2020

Bluebay has become our home away from home. I have personally been back to this resort 4 times. The initial trip was with my husband, second trip was an all girls trip with 5 of us, and then twice with family. Our most recent trip was with my father who had a hip replacement just over a year ago and the resort was great about sending a golf cart for him to get around, even had a little stool to help him get in and out. Sometimes it was a bit of a wait but they get pretty busy certain times of the day. Who's in a rush on holidays anyway? The hotel staff is incredible and always do what they can to better our stay. Everyone is always super friendly and helpfull. The resort is always updated each time I go and have been able to see improvements every time we go. We have been "members" at the resort since our first trip in 2017. We like anyone, were not sure about the money we paid or if we had made the right decison by the time we arrived home. We have now been back with friends and family as well as we actually just upgraded our package to a larger accomidation option as our children are getting older and the extra space is nicer for everyone. Our children will also be able to continue to use our program with Circle One as they become of age. The Circle One team (membership program) are amazing to deal with and the program offers so many destinations and accomidations. It's like having your very own travel agent available all the time. We have met so many great people there. We have our favorite "go to" guy Usi who signed us up for the program the first visit. He even helped us out with a mix up at another resort that we had on the other side of Mexico. He gave us contact information as well as personally checked in on our status and made sure we were doing ok. We stop in and say hello each time we visit the Bluebay. Rigaberto is our waiter at the buffet by the beach. We actually schedule our breakfast/lunch around his work shift. He is off one day/week so if we decide to go elsewhere we normally do it when he's not working. He makes every time such a pleasure as well as he finds the time to do special little things during his busy work schedule. Truly an amazing individual. At the front Martha and Veronica are the best and so super accomidating. I have come to recognize faces and it is so nice to travel where there is such a level of comfort. There is so much to see and do in the area and we have a new list of adventures planned every time we go. Looking forward to many more. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Recent stay

Feb 20th, 2020

We were a large group of 9 family members. We tried to all get rooms in the same building but only 6 of us could and that took some pleading at the front desk on arrival. As others mentioned about Circle 1 we did not experience any harassment from the time share folk. That would have been a major problem if they had. The food and a la cartes were exceptional. We did not have a single bad meal and each restaurant was very accommodating for a family of 9. Drawback is, these had to be reserved at 6:00 am which, thankfully, we had a couple early-risers in our group. They were also handy for reserving pool chairs too. Without them, we would likely not have experienced any a la cartes. The resort is too big for our liking requiring a lot of walking every day unless you luck out and get a seat on el tren. Grounds are well-maintained and wildlife is plentiful. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Cons - Our rooms were extreme tired and outdated. Showers are hard to get in as you need to climb over a 2foot wall. lots of black mold on walls, curtains and caulking. AC didn't work. Phones have terrible reception static noise. We were ground floor and are all suffering from stinging ant bites which are abound and itchy still. As a group, we enjoyed spending time on our ground floor patio but most of us were bitten by these ants. I tripped in a hole just off our patio and fell on my back (whisky may or may not have played a part lol) which resulted in additional ant stings on my back. It's instant pain and had to jump in he shower for relief. The water temp would constantly fluctuate while in the shower as well. Conclusions: I would not return as the resort for us was too big. Rooms need a major renovation. Beach is basically unusable. We loved the friendly staff and amazing food which should be made more readily available to all, not just the easy risers. Black and White bar was fun but too hot to stay inside so we spent most time on the patio chatting with other travellers. Overall, had a fun vacation and didn't miss the Canadian snow at all. 😎🥃 TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful, but the staff make this resort! Especially BENJAMIN at the French a la carte!

Feb 20th, 2020

My mother and I stayed here from February 3rd to February 10th, and I am writing this late because of a bug I picked up after I got home. Definitely not from this resort, because it was perfectly clean and I have never felt better on vacation than I did after every meal. We LOVED all of the food, but especially the Mexican restaurant a la carte and the more traditional Mexican foods at the buffet. The chefs here are amazing and truly excel at what they are familiar with. I want to give an especially HUGE thank you to Benjamin at the French restaurant who served us on February 9th. He was by FAR the best server we experienced (though every one was amazing!) and he made our last night at the hotel absolutely unforgettable. He went above and beyond and even treated us to a few extras that made us feel incredibly special. We were blown away by how he doted on us and we got to experience an extra special Mayan tradition. He gave my mom and I a dinner experience we will never forget and will cherish forever. He is an amazing man that I hope this resort will cherish and reward well!! Thank you SO so much Benjamin! We had absolutely zero issues with the resort itself, although the room is a little dated, but they were painting the hallways even during our stay, so it seems that they are working hard to modernize the buildings. The pools were immaculate, and I adored all of the little animals wandering around. Walking from our building (which was Tulum, one of the furthest away) was quiet and gorgeous every night and day. Felt like an oasis. I can’t imagine having difficulty walking, as it really isn’t far, but there were constantly carts available to take those visitors who can’t/don’t want to do so much walking. All in all, 10/10 vacation! Thanks so much! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Fam Jam 2020

Feb 20th, 2020

Enjoyed the stay. The food was very good. We were not able to book a meal in the French Restaurant as they were always “full”. I guess I should have bribed the concierge but I don’t believe in that in an “all inclusive” venue that you have already paid for. I paid for the “all inclusive” experience, I shouldn’t have to bribe anyone. Also, the app states that hotel guests are entitled to a half hour of sailing per guest. The staff at Dive-X, the company that sells sailing, diving, etc, on the hotel’s property, argued that wasn’t the case and wanted money for only a half hour. When this was disputed, the guy in charge stated that they were closed. So the Blue Bay app is actually false advertising. Very unimpressed. If I had known the truth that there was actually never any free sailing, I would have paid to sail the rest of my stay without a problem. But you lie, you lose money. The rooms were kept very clean and the food, except in the exclusive French restaurant, was very good! The room fridge was stocked daily with water, beer, and pop. A very nice touch. If you think you escaped telemarking, think again. We received a call to our room on our first or second morning directing us to see Rosie in the lobby to receive a gift. This was solely for selling timeshares. We were approached by other time share sales people on the property but after we browned up a bit they left us alone. So not impressed by this aggressive greasy marketing that one has already paid to get away from. The pools were kept very clean and there were lounger chairs everywhere there was space, except for a number of taped off areas ( maybe for the VIP’s?). The bar service at the pools was very intermittent, but the bars weren’t far so we could help ourselves when needed. Clean cold fresh purified water and non alcoholic slushes and soda were also available at the bar. A very nice touch as well. Try the “fresh lemonade”. Ask for it by name. It is essentially a caipirinha without the cashaca. You can have rum in it or not. Excellent either way. Some local street vendors got to set up on the property to sell their wares on one night-a good idea. Made for a nice evening. The WestJet Rep, Antonio, was a great guy and provided critical info and help when needed. The beach has been devastated by one too many hurricanes and they are busy reclaiming all their lost sand from the ocean floor. It’s ugly and dirty and is the first time I didn’t swim in the sea while in the Caribbean. We did swim in some little rias about a ten minute walk away. The beach was a fair walk away from our room. While the golf carts for the VIP’s were constantly buzzing around, they wouldn’t stop for us lowly commoners so we ended up walking about 90% of the time, which was good for us, but yet another let down in promised service. So unless you spend top dollar for a room in this mediocre resort, don’t expect every thing you are promised when you buy it. Kind of makes me want to avoid a timeshare there! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
