Screened-in balconies, which come standard, allow guests to enjoy the outdoors without interacting with its abundant bugs
Property's resort fee is very high at $45 per day
The Cheeca Lodge & Spa sits pretty on the skinny Florida key known as Upper Matecumbe, part of an incorporated village of islands called Islamorada. Travelers love this resort because it achieves a tropical getaway. But some mean this in a good way (transparent waters, calm Florida Bay breezes), while others mean this as an insult (too tropical to keep all the bugs away). There are several perks to staying at Cheeca Lodge, however. For one, the rooms feature screened-in balconies and rain showers, as well as flat-screen TVs, Illy espresso machines and wireless internet access (which is covered by the daily resort fee). Another plus, the bungalow-like setting is supremely romantic, and families will like that some of the accommodations have kitchens. If you don't feel like cooking, you can sit down to dinner at one of four on-site restaurants, which serve up fresh seafood and other tasty entrees. You'll find the Cheeca Lodge & Spa about 86 miles southwest of Miami and 80 miles northeast of Key West.

At 27 acres, this may be the largest resort in the Keys, and it's also big on included amenities. In the main lodge, West Indies–style rooms boast luxurious touches like elegant soaking tubs that fill in a stream from the ceiling.

The 214-room Cheeca Lodge & Spa is a luxury resort set on extensive, lush grounds in Islamorada, offering plenty of on-site features, including a nine-hole golf course, a pretty beach with a long fishing pier, a full-service spa, six tennis courts, and two pools (one for adults only). Three restaurants serve tasty seafood, sushi, and Italian fare, but they're pricey, and there's a fun tiki bar on the beach.

Extensively overhauled in 2009 following a fire, this sprawling, historic resort on 27 lush acres of beachfront offers world-class amenities in a laid-back setting. The standard rooms have West Indies–style decor and marble bathrooms, and 840-square-foot 'premier suites' feature floor-to-ceiling windows opening to ocean or island views, as well as open-air tubs for two on roomy balconies.

Travel + Leisure

Located just 90 minutes from Miami International Airport, this expansive property offers a little bit of everything the Keys has to offer. In addition to its 214 well-appointed rooms and suites, decked out in a tropical-chic style, the family-friendly resort is home to 27 acres of lush gardens, a Jack Nicklaus-designed 9-hole golf course, a top-of-the-line spa, a saltwater lagoon for swimming and snorkeling, and 1,100 feet of private beachfront.

Condé Nast Traveler

Surrounded by 27 acres of tropical gardens, the lodge faces 1,200-feet of beach and even has a saltwater lagoon for swimming and snorkeling. This being the Sportfishing Capital of the World, there's plenty a serious angler can do here – from casting a line from the longest pier in the Keys to chartering a boat (guests have unlimited use of fishing gear and sea kayaks).
