Stayed 3 nights in a lovely room

Mar 8th, 2020

We had never stayed in San Francisco but knew the hotel was being renovated so we weren't surprised to see ( and hear ) the construction all around us. When we checked in, the front desk staff upgraded us to a suite ( which was just lovely ) and put us in the "inside" so the clamour from the construction would be less obtrusive ( it was.). The room was very large with plenty of seating, a big screen TV and a comfortable bed, so we were very happy. Our only issue was the woefully inadequate lighting...there were only lamps in the room and they were poor at best...once the sun went down, we were struggling with the lack of light. I would suggest checking your room for light sources before getting too settled. Overall we had a very nice stay and the staff are exceptional. Ask for Albert at the door :) TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Outstanding Service!!!

Mar 6th, 2020

I've just completed a three day business stay at the Clift Royal Sonesta. Upon check in the front desk staff were super friendly and accommodating making sure to appoint the best room available. (love that!) Rooms are spacious and well stocked with luxury bath products and full mini bar. Most notable of my stay, was the concierge person, Steve Edmondson. Steve went above and beyond to help me download a presentation on my computer, print presentation materials, all the while striking up a lovely conversation about our personal travels abroad. So although I was there on business, I felt like I had a friend who had my back. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the extra effort, in this case a little went A LONG WAY to make my stay absolutely perfect! Other notables, beautiful bar, great food selection, bartenders very attentive. I'll definitely be back! Thank you Clift Royal Sonesta you guys knocked it out of the park! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Location

Feb 24th, 2020

We’ve stayed at the Clift before and appreciated the feel of the place even though it was aging. The renovations are both good and bad. The old lobby was friendlier. Now it seems stark (no pun intended) and too contemporary. The room improvements were necessary especially the bathrooms which are very nice now. We searched for an ice maker, called room service and waited 30 minutes for a bucket of ice! It only appeared after a second phone call. Our request for the standard room with a king bed resulted in a queen bed. We moved after requesting to what we originally asked for. We’re not picky people but the lapse in service was unexpected. The exterior scaffolding was extremely off-putting. It’s necessary but ruins the appearance of not only the Clift but all the buildings along Geary. We only found the front with the help of the Uber driver. The main draw is still San Francisco. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Best concierge experience ever

Feb 21st, 2020

My wife and I recently traveled to San Francisco to see the Harry Potter plays, and we picked The Clift Hotel next door to stay. We wanted to tour the town and the area during the day. There were issues, though. I recently broke my foot and was wearing a boot, and my wife cannot walk long distances. I called the hotel concierge - Steve Edmonson - for detailed help with arranging and booking city tours by car, transport to and from the hotel, meal reservations, and a motorized scooter. I am a bit of a nervous traveler and did not want any uncertainties. Over the next several days, he and I had several phone and email conversations about working through our several specific requests. Steve has been the best hotel concierge I have ever met. On the phone and in person, Steve has been consummately professional and detail-oriented, and every bit as concerned as I about making the trip run smoothly. He has owned the process as much as I have. He has provided a level of personal service far beyond expected. We had a wonderful stay, and I can not begin to express my appreciation to him for his effort. Steve, thank you. While I am at it, let me also note that the Clift itself was terrific, too. It is all brand new on the inside, and the room was large and very comfortable. The hotel is very near Union Square, shops, restaurants, and theaters. Without a doubt, this was a great hotel experience for us, and I recommend it very highly. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great space, but TERRIBLE service

Jan 26th, 2020

We stayed at The Clift for a friend’s wedding weekend. We thought that the rooms were wonderfully updated and very spacious. If you try to go to the bar, they are incredibly snobbish and I accommodating. We were here for a wedding party and we sat in one booth that was unoccupied at 1am, and they demanded (very rudely) that we moved unless we wanted to purchase the table for $350. NOBODY ELSE was at the bar at the same time. There were many other tables and booths that were unoccupied. We have never encountered any hotel staff that was so incredibly rude in all of our travels. I would NEVER NEVER recommend this hotel to any of my friends or family visiting the SF area because I think that there are so many other areas that would be happy and gracious for our business. This is one of THE WORST experiences I have ever had, and I would never stay here again. I would never send our family or friends here EVER. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
