Smoker's paradise - know which areas to avoid and you will like the place.

All of the taff very helpful and frendly. Food excellent and of the usual RIU standard. Rooms comfortable however the matrasses in the two rooms we stayed (moved once because required different bed configuration) should have been replaced because of the dents resulting from the hundreds of guests who have slept in the beds over the past years. Other criticism: kinds (and I mean ages 5-12) should NOT be allowed in the late night disco which opened at10 p.m. All areas for smokers (all the outside -covered- bars and outside -covered- restaurants are for smokers!!!! Never ever been in a hotel/restaurant (even in Spain) where smoking is allowed while people are having their brreakfast lunch or dinner. The best places to eat and drink are all smoking areas which is unacceptable!!! Putting some cocktails on the drinks menu would be nice as well. Overall 8 out of 10 and mainly disappointed about the smoking issue. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

So nice to be back

We’ve been coming to this hotel for about 10 years if not more & it just gets better. Consistently good service immaculately clean and something for everyone, even this year there is an additional buffet Burger bar (not that I needed it). My only observation and it’s personal to me as being a coeliac the food is never labelled and I have to ask consistently which is always a bit of a hassle as I don’t like being singled out, or classed as awkward. Otherwise I just kept to plain fish, rice and foods that looked safe. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Brilliant Riu All Inclusive Beachfront

We stayed for 2 weeks in early January. We know the area quite well and have stayed in GC several times before each time at a different resort over the past 5 years. This was our first Riu experience. Room 54 on lower left side - facing the inner garden. Yes noise was audible in the paved hallways but really, this is not as big a deal as people make it out to be in some reviews. Gina our housekeeper was fantastic - thank you!!! El Patio Restaurant is really small so we preferred El Dunas and Atlantico. Only problem with the Atlantico was the immense quantity of smokers who sat outside and smoked WHILE EATING and forced us to have to eat inside, despite beautiful 24 degree warmth - but the smoke in the air sorta dimmed the al fresco experience. I really wish smoking were restricted to non-dining areas full stop. All the bars were wonderful and their was rarely ever a queue for a drink. Tons of options for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages including several sugar-free sodas (more than we expected). Sebastian the server at Atlantico is truly a delight, I looked forward to seeing his smiley face and friendly demeanour at any meal I could. We chatted about Netflix and binge-watching CSI etc... he’s an asset to the Riu for sure :-) Indeed there’s no adherence or compliance to the hotel’s no sun-bed ‘reserving’ policy - there was absolutely NO CHANCE of getting a sun lounger by the infinity pool (seaside one) if you awoke later than 7am. Also, most of the sun loungers simply sat empty (no human occupying them) most of the day - as if they’d been reserved by people for a maybe 2 hour bit of the day... but the rest of the day they sat ‘Reserved’ so nobody could use them. Ridiculous.... This wasn’t so bad though, because the wind was pretty fierce up there at the infinity pool as no trees or buildings to block it (also obstruction free sun though). We spent most of our time at the heated pool on the left outer side of the hotel (left as in, closest to El Dunas Restaurant). It was much quieter and there were ALWAYS plenty of sun loungers available. Towels can be exchanged for new ones daily - love this! We had a slight issue with a leaky shower and I asked for maintenance to look into it - we expected to see/hear from someone in maybe a day or two because it was the weekend. Would you believe the repairman showed up at 8:30pm in the evening to sort it??? WOW - Great service! The hotel is impeccably clean - shockingly so. We were hugely impressed. However, a concern of ours was the number of times I reached for a hand sanitiser and found it empty, day after day they were not being refilled. The choice of food in the restaurants was brilliant. Cannot fault them for anything. Doesn’t matter what kind of diet or lifestyle food needs you have - Riu Gran Canaria totally caters for every one of these. The variety does get a little repetitive when you are staying in any AI for 2 weeks - don’t blame the hotel... it happens anywhere. The Kaori Chinese restaurant was bloody fantastic. My partner inadvertently enjoyed himself a bit too much with 6 plates of food one night. No tummy aches, no issues (he expected MSG or other additives as possibilities but NONE). His only mistake was eating too much of a good thing! The hotel is centrally located so you can walk on the promenade every day and try out other food, go to the little market or just take a walk and see the waves come in. The front desk were incredibly helpful in finding me a farmacia to sort a sinus infection. Everyone spoke multiple languages and were helpful and attentive. My only reason for a 4 star review as opposed to 5 is that smoking is permitted in dining areas (despite being outside), multiple hand sanitisers not being refilled, and lack of enforcing the sun lounger reservation policy. I don’t know if January is a peak time or not - but if the hotel had a greater quantity of guests I would seriously worry about these even more as they would be compounded to a much greater degree. Great location but hotel was not up to our expectations!

We normally stay at the Maspalomas Princess but because of their refurbishment we decided to try elsewhere and were excited because of the hotel’s location right on the promenade at Melonaras because the Princess is a taxi drive away from the sea. We had a garden view room which was quite good and actually did have a sea view as well. It had a large queen size bed and good bathroom with shower but no bath, however the first night we discovered you cannot leave the patio doors open as it was above the restaurant and noisy either with guests sitting outside or the staff laying up the outside tables till 1am!! All the hotel is open plan and the minute you walk into the corridor outside the bedroom you feel the cold air in the evening. I am sure in the summer months this is fine but as a winter sun resort this was not what we were expecting. All the bars and restaurants (except the Asian one) are outside with open doors so quite cold, meaning to go for dinner in the evening you need warm clothing. Many people came to dinner with puffa jackets on!! I actually had to go and buy a long evening cardigan for me and fleece for my partner as we weren’t expecting this. I love to dress up for dinner on holiday but found I was wearing trousers most of the time as too cold for dresses. We have been away to Gran Canaria many times in the winter months and other hotels have indoor restaurants and bars and entertainment so no need to be outside in the colder months. The hotel foyer area is vast but empty There was an indoor theatre room with bar where the hotels own entertainment staff performed at night, they tried hard but a bit amateurish, but this was theatre style seating and always absolutely packed every night. The entertainment on the stage outside was a selection of professional duos and trios on a rota system, some were really good, we discovered after a few nights that the left hand side of the stage was non smoking tables as there were a lot of smokers there. Unfortunately if you sit outside to eat there is no segregation which can be bad when you’re eating. The main dining room is huge with tables close together, no tablecloths just placemats and I’m afraid to say resembled a canteen!! Food was ok but very repetitive. You can book for the Atlantic and Asian restaurant for dinner and the Asian was very good and inside the hotel so warm!!! The Atlantic was right by the sea and good views and smaller so more personal, but although it was supposed to have theme nights we found the food was the same as the main restaurant. One thing I must point out is the bar/ restaurant/foyer staff and Chambermaids were all excellent and worked very hard. The outdoor areas are good and have three pools, with one infinity pool. These were always empty as only one was heated and that was still cold!! You could never get a sunbed near the Infinity pool down by the sea but otherwise no issues getting sun beds elsewhere. There was no shop at all in the hotel which we found strange but you could go out of the back gate turn left and only a five minute walk to the supermarket and shopping centre. Overall the all inclusive was good with food and premium drinks on tap all day. The Atlantic restaurant was definitely the best for breakfast and lunch with amazing views, and the Asian best for dinner. Loved the location and the fact you could walk all the way to the sand dunes, but wouldn’t go there again as didn’t think the food, restaurants, hotel interior was 4 star quality. Another fantastic stay

Excellent and friendly service once again on our third stay. Will be returning. Great location with sea views. Numerous food options, all good quality with local and international dishes and plenty of bars to choose from. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
