Short getaway

Aug 23rd, 2019

Worst experience at a hotel where a room cost in excess of $350 night. Granted we went up to Kennebunkport without a reservation in August. Called this hotel on the way and they had a room. Check in was fine and the hotel although old was neat- grounds were nice. No air conditioning in the room but it was fine we left the windows open. Bad mistake.... there was a wedding going on and all night all we heard were the wedding guests swearing and loud outside our room and under our window. Called the front desk twice and all they said is security was trying to get them in the bar. We finally packed up and left. The drunken idiots in the lobby knew we were leaving because they were loud commenting on that fact, but the staff did nothing. We were charged $150 the day rate. We travel frequently and have never had this happen. Will never go back TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Wedding reception.

Aug 22nd, 2019

The main room was where the reception was held. Employees very friendly and helpful. Appetizers were great. Dinner food was excellent especially the steak. This place was within walking distance of St Anns church which was convenient. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Going downhill

Aug 22nd, 2019

My husband and I have been going to The Colony for 18 years, before we had children and now with our children and our extended family. This place holds many special memories for us but I am afraid to say it is going downhill. There are three main issues: 1. The pool- the pool has always been my favorite feature of the hotel, perched above the ocean, with wonderful views. It is also saltwater, which is great. However, each day we were there (3 in all), there was toilet paper in the pool and hair balls. Yes, hair balls. It grossed me out to see our kids fishing toilet paper out of the pool. I don’t think they are attentive to cleaning the pool and wouldn’t they have also seen stuff floating in the pool? I don’t get it. Really gross. 2. The food, especially the breakfast. The breakfast buffet, which comes with your room, has never been gourmet but it was always decent. This year we simply could not eat it. The eggs are are tasteless and clearly made from powder, the fruit is beyond ripe and mushy, and the wait to use the two toasters is ridiculous. It is just bad. The lunch is a bit better but not worth the prices. 3. Upkeep- this is an older hotel which is part of what makes it charming, however while we were in the bar the roof started leaking on us. There are bits of disrepair around the hotel, its just starting to seem neglected. I would like to keep going to this hotel because of the memories but the hotel needs to step up the upkeep of their facilities and the kitchen. Please do not ruin this beautiful gem! Historic charm with a modern pool

Aug 19th, 2019

We loved our stay at The Colony earlier this month. The hotel is really impressive when you drive up and the oceanfront setting is spectacular. The lack of AC wasn’t really an issue as Maine nights are cool and comfortable (at least when we were there). The pool is huge, there were plenty of chairs and umbrellas, yummy food and the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail. The hotel is very accommodating to young families and we loved seeing so many dogs everywhere! The breakfast buffet (included) was plentiful and the staff attentive. There were a few minor cons (small bathrooms, no in-room amenities, nowhere to refill water bottles - usually standard in a “green” hotel), but otherwise a great stay! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Disappointing - not at all upmarket as we thought

Aug 18th, 2019

We mistakenly thought this would be an upscale hotel given its upscale price. We were wrong. We were warned that the room had no A/C or T.V., but it was small with a small bathroom, a short tub with shower over and a plastic curtain. The room had a ceiling fan with a missing speed chain so we could have it flat out or off. We could have been in a motel. The restaurant was in the bar, open to the pool. Burgers, chicken, fish etc. Somewhere you wear shorts and T shirt, definitely not somewhere to go for a lovely meal. They held a buffet dinner on Friday night and to their credit there was prime rib and lobster available for a very reasonable $50, but the food was tepid and the service terrible and chaotic. We ordered wine when we sat down and it turned up after we had finished both courses and were about to leave, despite numerous reminders. I wish that waiting staff would write things down and not try to commit it to memory as with each reminder we had to reconfirm our selection. Many of the staff were students on holiday jobs. The hostess girls were very curt and perfunctory and bizarrely wore very sloppy clothes, old knitted cardigans down to their knees, while the waiters and bus-boys were all in uniform, again it didn't matter but I don't get why they don't maintain a standard. The location and views were great but they hosted a huge wedding on Saturday that put paid to any space, peace or quiet, I don't really mind as they have to make money but it sort of spoiled our stay there. Almost all guests were American and seemed to enjoy the place so put this review in context from a European looking for some New England charm and hospitality - which we did not find. Sorry to write a negative review, some of the staff were really nice. Perhaps they were just too busy at it was peak season. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
