Needs Renovating

Feb 20th, 2020

Stayed here one night with my family while visiting Hampton University. Was able to check in early so that was a plus. The 2 bed double room was clean and a decent size. I didn’t realize I had booked a room with only a shower but that wasn’t a problem except for a little bit of mold in the cracks of the shower. Also, hotels want you to conserve towels, the problem is there was nowhere to hang them. The hotel needs to remove the pictures above the toilet and put up a towel rack. The closet door in the room was broken. Only one side was open and it couldn’t be moved. Also, we had to slam the bathroom door in order to close it which was very annoying. The complimentary hotel breakfast was great! Waffles, eggs, potatoes, sausage, bacon, cereal, fruit and pastries. The negative is you will freeze in the winter while trying to eat breakfast or sitting in the lobby. The breakfast sitting area is literally at the front door. It’s the first thing you see when you walk in. Tables to the left/right and a lounge area. I sat at a table closer to the food area so it wasn’t as cold. Others sat with their jackets on or went back up to their rooms. The best thing about this hotel is the location. It’s walking distance to a mall, restaurants and easy drive to Hampton. Overall the hotel staff were helpful and the cookies at the front desk in the evening were awesome too! If you want an inexpensive hotel it’s okay for one night but not more than that. Awesome

This has been one of the nicest hotels we have stayed at. The breakfast lady was the best of all. I didn’t get her name but she is the one who made our stay great. Also the night audit girl who worked a 16hr shift one day had the best attitude even after working 16hrs. Thank you both ladies TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

A "stay vacation" dream team. Linens and towels were impeccably clean and fresh smelling! Sheets were free of pilling! Room was white glove clean. Breakfast was amazing! All staff remained exuberantly hospitable!!! This location is in close proximity to Patrick Henry Mall, Whole Foods Store and other fun eating establishments. You will have a pleasant and peaceful sleep experience. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

A very mixed experience

Aug 14th, 2019

We don't usually stay at the Comfort chain, but chose this one in Newport News because (1) it had a very good rate for the area (S89), and (2) it got very good ratings from my fellow reviewers on TripAdvisor. We certainly did not find this venue unacceptable, but our experience was apparently much "iffier" than that of most reviewers. There were some good points. The venue is close to the interstate and many restaurants and stores. It was clean, the free breakfast was better than average, and there was a free morning newspaper. But there were also flaws, one serious. Soundproofing was one on the minor level. Our room widow overlooked an area were there were two large noisy A/C compressors/vent fans and they made a constant whirrring sound in the room. Also showing poor sound proofing, we could easily hear people in adjacent rooms. You couldn't hear what they were saying, but you could distinctly hear the voices and occasional other sounds. Light sleepers will be challenged. The desk clerk who checked us in presented a bigger issue. When checking us in she had the air of being put upon. She wasn't rude, but welcoming seemed beyond her. When we got to the room, we found that there was no desk chair. So I went to the lobby and mentioned that. Her response was that we were in a handicapped room and that they did not have chairs so that wheelchair-bound guests could get to the desk. That seemed enough of a response to her. I said that we were not handicapped and had not requested such a room. I suggested we move to another room. She said they were full and couldn't do that, which is why we had been assigned the handicapped room. I said that I thought we ought to be able to use the desk and she should get maintenance to bring up a chair. With a not fully suppressed sigh, she agreed to have one sent up. About 90 minutes later, and with no chair having arrived, my wife went to the desk an reiterated that we had no chair. The clerk went through the handicapped room reasoning again. She had clearly done nothing, nor did she have any attention of doing so. Fortunately, the maintenance man happened to be standing near the desk, overheard the conversation, and offered to bring a chair up. It arrived within minutes. He merits praise. The desk clerk needs an energy drink or maybe some time in caring and courtesy camp to help her adjust her I-couldn't-care-less lethargic attitude. Just in case management reads this and cares, they can figure out the offending clerk by knowing that we checked in on Tuesday, July 23 at about 5:30 p.m. A final note is that the hotel can be hard to find. We had it in our GPS but drove by it several times (and on a divided, busy road, coming back was a bit of a chore). It is not visible from the road. It is in a shopping mall (the Patrick Henry?), but there is no sign for the hotel among those indicating the stores there. When we mentioned this issue to our friendly desk clerk when we arrived, her response was that, yes, it was a problem that many people noted, but that the hotel was worth the struggle to find. All in all, despite its low price, we disagree. We left sure we wold not want to find it again. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Convenient but could have been cleaner.

Aug 4th, 2019

The hotel was extremely conveniently located, and there are plenty of places to eat in walking distance. It is located across the road from a mall, so plenty of shopping available. Check in was easy, as was check out. The room was reasonably appointed and the bed was comfortable. I had to leave before breakfast started so I have no input for that. However, even though the housekeeper literally had just gotten done with the room, it could have been cleaner. The bathroom floor and corners of the shower had some grime/crud, and there was dirt on the sink backsplash that was obvious enough it ought to have earned at least a half-hearted swipe with a cloth. But the BIG problem I had with cleanliness was a small pile of glittery-blue-polished NAIL CLIPPINGS on the floor near the bed. As I did not see it until I went to retire for the night, I admit I did not bring it to anyone's attention. But they were pretty obvious, too, and evidence that there hadn't been any vacuuming done. In all, I might stay here again, but would definitely give the room a thorough inspection before settling in. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
