Guests love the hotel's location near the ocean and downtown San Juan
Meals here are expensive
Named after the Condado district in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Frederick William Vanderbilt (the hotel's original owner), the Preferred-affiliated Condado Vanderbilt Hotel has welcomed notable guests like Charles Lindberg, Bob Hope and former President Franklin D. Roosevelt since opening its doors in 1919. Featuring Spanish Revival-style architecture, the hotel combines modern amenities – such as multiple pools (including a beautiful infinity pool), a fitness center and a spa – with traditional touches like luggage porter service and tray ceilings in the lobby. Contemporary perks, including C.O. Bigelow toiletries, French press coffee makers, flat-screen smart TVs and 300-thread-count Rivolta Carmignani linens, are also available in the property's 319 accommodations. Plus, the property's daily resort fee covers extras like in-room Wi-Fi access and bottled water. For amenities like 24-hour butler service, a whirlpool tub and multiple balconies, guests can upgrade to a one-, two- or three-bedroom suite. Overall, travelers rave about the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, citing its superb customer service, central location and picturesque ocean views as highlights. Visitors also praise the food served at Tacos & Tequila, Ola Oceanfront Bistro and 1919 Restaurant, although some caution that meals in all three eateries are pricey. To save some coin, members of the I Prefer Hotel Rewards program can apply reward certificates toward room costs.

Critic Reviews

As you pull up to the early Spanish Revival facade of the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in San Juan, the valets open the grand doors into the foyer and it becomes apparent you have come to the right place for luxury and relaxation. After all, the first thing you see as your eyes adjust to the indoor light is the sparkling ocean roaring beyond the glass wall of the spacious and comfortable lounge, the Vanderbilt Court.

Early 20th-century antiques are ubiquitous throughout, and the hotel plays up its historic setting with handsome restaurants and lounges that exude a turn-of-the-century ambience. At the same time, an infinity-edge pool and innovative spa, in addition to high-tech guest rooms and meeting spaces infuse the hotel with a refreshing contemporary element.

Condé Nast Traveler

THE San Juan destination in its original incarnation, painstakingly restored between 2012 and 2014, the Condado Vanderbilt thrills once again with Spanish Revival character and floor to ceiling water views in the lounge. The Condado leads the way on this new-again stretch of classic beach, second to none in sophisticated glamour and exclusivity.

Built as the first luxury resort in the Caribbean, circa 1919, this opulent historic hotel is quite contemporary. Guest rooms are upscale with all of the enhanced technology today's traveler expects.

The hotel offers four restaurants, including a fine dining outlet under the helm of Michelin-starred executive chef Juan José Cuevas. Named in honor of the hotel's original opening date, the signature 1919 Restaurant reflects the chef's passion for farm-to-table cuisine: He hand-selects local, artisanal products for his own contemporary spin on island-to-table fare. A prix fixe four-course menu with an option for wine pairings is available in the modern dining room that overlooks the water. For casual dining, the light and bright Ola Oceanfront Bistro boasts a seaside vibe with natural woods and a backdrop of colorful umbrellas and blue water visible through its floor-to-ceiling windows. Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks throughout the day, Ola focuses on the flavors of Puerto Rico. At Tacos & Tequila, also affiliated with Cuevas, seven varieties of this Mexican favorite take center stage on the menu. STK rounds out the offerings with a modern steakhouse vibe. Four lounges – including a cigar bar – offer a variety of specialty drinks, from martinis to cognac. All but the cigar bar serve appetizers and small plates and feature live music.
