Clean and fairly priced hotel but with no in-house restaurant or cafe

My wife and I spent two nights in the Marriott Courtyard while in town for a wedding. There were some good aspects and some no-so-good. We checked in the late afternoon and were given 2 key cards with the room number written on the paper folder. When we got to our room, neither one worked. We asked a housekeeper who was right there for help and she couldn't do it either. So she let us in with her pass key and told us to notify the front desk to get the cards recoded or exchanged. So, we went in, partially unpacked, and sat down to relax after a long trip. Eventually, I called the front desk and, after a quick check, they realized that we were in the wrong room - the wrong number had been written on the card folder. I asked if I needed to go to the desk to swap the cards and was told that, no, we had to move all of our stuff, some of which had been unpacked, to the correct room (admittedly close by). So, we had to repack and relocate to the correct room which was identical to the one we'd been in! I have no idea why we couldn't have just stayed in the first room and swapped cards - making us do that switch cost them a ratings point. They got that point back by recharging our phones 3 total times during our stay - I'm not sure how I forgot to pack the charger but forget it I did. During our stay, everyone we encountered - the front desk staff, all the housekeepers, and one man from "engineering" were helpful, courteous, and friendly. In that respect, customer relations was a job well done. The room itself was unexciting but perfectly adequate for our needs and certainly fair value for the amount charged. It was clean and comfortable and we made use of the mini-refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker. A minor quibble - I'm not sure why they still use CFL bulbs - LED's reach full intensity instantly, provide better light, and actually cost less to run - the hotel would recover the added costs in a reasonable time period. A second quibble - the web site says they charge $67 per day to park a car. We parked at the garage just down the street for $27 per day less than that. I don't see why the hotel should be making that kind of profit on parking the car. The biggest negative is that the hotel has no in-house cafe - just some vending machines in the lower lobby. That means that, to get breakfast, one must go outside, in the bitter cold in the winter. This hotel was chosen for us by the folks who planned the wedding and we didn't realize the lack of a cafe until too late. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Amazing staff, especially Willie Howard, Yenny, and Kareem!

WOW! This is the best hotel I have every stayed at in 20 years! The staff are sincerely helpful, caring and demonstrate the highest level of customer service! Willie Howard greet us every morning with outstanding genuine friendliness and speedy checkout and wishing us a good day. His calm personality was always comforting and sincere. Yenny and Kareem were also fantastic and helped us during our stay. We had to check out before our original departure and everyone said that was very fine. The housekeeping and maintenance were also extremely helpful and always asked to help! Thank you! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Compliments to Willie, Lisa and the entire front desk staff. They are helpful and courteous. Hotel lobby has comfy seating, tables for eating and high desks used for work stations. The hotel rooms are clean, the bathrooms are filled with many towels and necessary sundries. Complimentary coffee and tea are available in room and in the lobby. Next reservation is booked. Over Priced Hotel

Coutyard is not really a hotel, it is just a lodge that is over priced. No complimentary water, elevator was extremely slow, facilities are poor and the view is terrible !!! I have been staying with Marriott but this experience is traumatic for me. The property does not deserve the Marriott brand. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great NY location if you are staying for a few days

We stayed for a few days and thought it would be a better value to stay away from midtown. This hotel is in a nice neighborhood, close to the access roads to Laguardia and JFK. Request a room on a higher floor. Or original room was on the 5th floor in the back of the building and it looked at a wall. However after moving rooms we ended up in the perfect spot to enjoy NYC. Staff and cleaning crew were great too. No mini bar either! Instead there are lots of shops for supplies nearby. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
