STRESS RELIEF

Jul 4th, 2020

SUMMARY Our sixth time here and we truly enjoy this boutique resort. We usually travel in March for 10 days to two weeks and chose Cozumel Palace for our first week arriving March 14-21. Well it turned out to be a very stressful trip due to Covid-19 outbreak and countries shutting down their borders while we were there. The resort was fabulous and all the staff, while understanding the implications, were fabulous never letting us down on service and friendliness. We found a flight out of Cancun on the 21st and booked it so we can get home. We made it. We had a chance to speak with the General Manager Marco and he was visibly upset over what is to come, having great concern for his staff (family). The following Monday, March 23, they temporarily closed the resort. PRE TRIP ARRANGEMENTS Jose Luis has been at Cozumel Palace for many years and before becoming Diamond Concierge, he was working the front desk. He made all pre trip arrangements and took care of everything for us from spa appointments to restaurant reservations and was always a text away if we needed anything. SUMMARY OF RESORT, LOCATION, BEACH Unlike some of the other Palace properties, Cozumel Palace has no beach, instead, it has great snorkeling in beautiful clear blue water right from the resort. They will supply you with snorkelling equipment and life vests. It is a boutique hotel with 170 ocean facing rooms and located about a 15-20 minute walk from downtown San Miguel and is 15 minutes from the airport. Upon arrival, we are greeted with a flower for my wife and our favourite beverage, tequila. We are greeted by Richard from guest services and Jose Luis our Diamond Concierge. SUITE AND VIEW The rooms are spacious and face the ocean and the pool below. From our room, we could see the cruise ships docked in San Miguel and sometimes in the early mornings, a school of dolphins will swim by. The resort faces west and they have the most magnificent sunsets. SPA & GYM The spa is nice and comfortable, not huge as expected for a smaller resort but have the full service. Juanita was great. There is a small gym with some basic equipment, a multi function machine, free weights, treadmills and bikes. There is no trainer stationed at the gym but Rodrigo from the entertainment staff will help with fitness. ENTERTAINMENT Nightly shows around 9pm out on the deck. POOLS There are two pools on two levels, upper level flows in the lower level with the pool bar in the lower level. Due to the resort being at a rocky edge without a beach, Cozumel Palace created to sandy areas flanking the pools with personal palapas on one side which is also the VIP section. David the pool concierge made sure we had what needed and we had great service from Heri, Darvin and bartender Raul. BARS There are two bars, one in the lobby and the other outside pool bar. We always closed our evening at the lobby bar for a few nightcaps. Excellent service from bartenders Rodrigo and David with Ericka serving tables and Evert bar manager. FOOD Part of the draw to Cozumel Palace is the food and wines. We had a such a fabulous experience with our friend and sommelier Joel experiencing different wine pairings and discussing the complexities. The staff and managers were all awesome with personal attention to detail led by Lilia, food and beverage manager, who we met in Jamaica, Jesus the beverage manager, Selene, Luis Angel and Juan. The Italian restaurant Turquesa become a buffet with great selections changing daily for Breakfast and Lunch. Had great service from Hilario and Fili. Fabulous private birthday dinner on the sundeck. Shrimp and avocado salad, Cannelloni, Salmon, Short ribs and Caramel Apple cake with coffee ice cream. Started with Moët and moved to a fabulous 2015 Ruffino Chianti Classico courtesy of our sommelier Joel. Service was great from Ananias and her helper Yolanda. The Turquesa (Italian) has a great menu of authentic Italian dishes. Started with a classic Caesar, medium rare Petite Fillet and Lamb shank done to perfection. Joel brought out a most amazing 2003 R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Rioja with an oak and ripe fruit nose with a dark fruit, light leather and earthy finish. Quite complex and a nice lasting aftertaste. On another night, Joel brought a wonderful Spanish Tempenillo plum & tar nose, black cherry with a lasting finish. Excellent service from Angel, Samatha and Captain Selene. At Momo’s (Asian) we had some fabulous Tuna and Salmon sashimi, calamari stuffed with baby scallops and clams grilled with butter and garlic, breaded pork was moist and tasty. Joel brought out a superb Primitivo with a total fruit bomb when it hit you’re mouth, dark fruit, plum, nice tannins, full bodied and fruity. Service fabulous from Ruisel and Luis Angel checking you see if all is good. Martha in reception was a sweetheart. Great St Patrick’s Day grill dinner outside at Flamingos. Irish themed and wonderful. Coddie and potatoes, cabbage with bacon, tender and juicy roast beef. Joel brought a fantastic 2014 Trivento Malbec is ever changing with a tar nose at the beginning then turns to a ripe plum once it opened up. Strong tannins then light. Very complex. Fantastic service from Rod. Flamingos outdoor grill had a great mix of food. Had some roast pork, Chicken Corden Blue, Potatoes Terrine and beef bourguignon. All types of meet and fish can be ordered to be grilled. Joel delighted us again with a Tempranillo-Cab that was bold and dry. On the nose was oak and black fruit and had earthy, black current notes. Lovely wine. Our last dinner last night was the romantic dinner outside in a sandy area with palapas by the pier. Wonderful deconstructed salad, Creme of spinach soup, lobster and steak finished with a red velvet cake. Another fabulous wine, Carménère and Cabernet from Chile. Black fruit and coffee nose with strong tannins, bold and dry. Personal and superb service from Eddie. All in all a fabulous vacation even with the stresses of the looming border shut downs and pandemic. The staff made it happen. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Wonderful place to stay with friendly staff

Jul 2nd, 2020

My wife and I have stayed here twice and both times have been wonderful. We opted for the concierge rooms which put us on the 4th floor with and excellent view of the ocean. The hotel is an older property and probably due for a refresh, but the place was immaculately maintained. It is not a large place. I think there are only about 170 rooms, so you won't find a mega-pool and 20 dining locations. What you will find is a very, very friendly staff who learned our names and anticipated our needs. The only thing I found objectionable was the high pressure sales push for their vacation club when we checked in. Once that was over, everything was great. If you are looking for a beach to walk on, there isn't one. There are lounge chairs in the sand, but to reach the ocean, you will have to climb down a short ladder. Once you are down the ladder, you will be treated to some excellent snorkeling in crystal clear water. I'm a scuba diver and I've been on dives that I've seen less wild life than I've seen snorkeling at this hotel. Eagle rays, barracuda, sea turtles, angels, puffers and grouper to name a few. For the divers, they have an onsite dive shop and the cost of the dives is mostly covered by the resort credits. The boats are a little slow, so plan on an hour to reach the best reefs to the south. The food was very good on my last visit and had improved since my first visit. There are three restaurants; Japanese, Italian and Mexican. I think my favorite was the Japanese. They also offer an outdoor buffet that has a good selection of food. During the day, they have an outdoor grill area that offers a variety of tasty food. Of course, being all inclusive, there are a number of bartenders and hostesses keeping your glass full. There is also an onsite spa that offers a variety of services. My wife and I splurged on the couples aromatherapy massage and it was to die for. Some of the cost is covered by the resort credits. You can feel like a prisoner at many all inclusives, but this hotel is within walking distance of the downtime area with all of the shopping, restaurants and bars. You can also rent a jeep and tour the island for a day if you would like. The eastern shore is worth the short drive. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Always nice to stayat Cozumel Palace

Jun 29th, 2020

One of those trips where we planned nothing and did nothing other than to enjoy the resort and the all inclusive. We have stayed here before and since we enjoyed our stay we decided to repeat it. Once again the personnel, service and food we just what we wanted. Always nice to have a completely relaxing stay. Our only disappointment was the lack of the sushi buffet table in the Asain restaurant, yes you can still order the sushi but it was so nice to have a big selection of items to chose from while waiting for the entree. Also the size of the entres seemed to be rather small to the point we actually left the Mexican restaurant to go to the buffet to get a little more to eat. The food was well prepared however. Rooms were fine. Service at breakfast was always fun as the servers were always fun to talk with and they seemed to make sure we had what we wanted. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
