Our "GO-TO" Place in Bonaire

May 6th, 2019

Let's start by saying, I have been back to Bonaire 7 times now. So, I am a bit of a junkie when it comes to this place. With only one exception, we have always stayed at Den Laman Condos, with a beach front room that is right over the water. It is pricey to do so, but once you do it, nothing else will do. The Good: The rooms are wonderful. Not really lavish, and almost Spartan in some ways. Classic Dutch influence, I think. But they are roomy, a nice place to hang out when you are not out exploring the island or diving, and you just can not beat the view. There is a dive operation right in the resort where you can book your diving, arrange boat dives (don't know why anyone boat dives this place, the beach diving is the best you will find), and store your gear. The dive shop personnel have not always been the friendliest people I have dealt with, but they are fine. You really don't deal with them except at the beginning to arrange your dive package, and at the end, when you check back in and pay your bill. The Diving: I have been diving since 1974. Been a lot of places, and seen a lot of things. But I keep coming back to Bonaire as my favorite place to dive. Mainly because it is just no hassle diving. You rent a truck, get your tank/weights, throw you gear in the back, drive to one on many beach dives on the island, and go diving. No one "managing" your dive experience. No group dives (unless you go boat diving). You are treated like an adult and are expected to act responsibly. Dive as hard or as easy as you like. And the diving is usually really great. Over the years, I have seen some sign of reef stress, especially on dives around 1000 steps. But it is still just a great place to dive, overall. The Island: Bonaire is not a place I would ever suggest to anyone who does not dive. The place does not have much touristy things to do above water. It has some good places to eat, and some cute shops. But that is about it. Really no actual sand beaches worth mentioning. It is a rocky (reef) coast. But, if you are a diver ... you will love this place. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

A perfect week of diving and relaxation.

Apr 14th, 2019

This was our 6th trip to Bonaire. This year we stepped away from the "all inclusive" resort style. We had oceanfront two bedroom room for four people. The room was spacious with nice sunset views of Klein Bonaire. Everything was modern and clean. The kitchen was even equipped with a dishwasher! We had been warned about the noise from the resort next door (Coco Beach). I'm a heavy sleeper, but my wife did notice the music. Most nights weren't too bad, but our last night (Saturday) they had music running loud and late. Coco Beach plays the sound system every afternoon. Dive Friends has an on-site dive shop and gear room. The storage room had carts for hauling the gear down to the dock or too the truck for diving. The only thing we would change, going back (and we very likely will) is to drop the breakfast plan that we purchased. The choices were limited and the service was a bit slow. I know it's an island and we're on vacation, but an hour or more for breakfast really cuts into the morning when they don't open till 7:30. We took to loading up our tanks and gear before breakfast. The island has a number of grocery stores which are very nice and modern. We bought our lunch foods there and, when we go back, will also buy breakfast stuff there to eat breakfast in the condo. The "house" reef (located just off their access dock) is great with Tarpon, Jacks, and lots of little things. We even found a male jawfish holding eggs in its mouth, right off the dock. We loved our stay at Den Laman!

Feb 28th, 2019

My husband and I spent 9 days at Den Laman on Bonaire and had a great experience. The staff were friendly and helpful and the location was convenient to all of the dive/snorkeling spots as well as grocery store and restaurants. Our second floor, very private, corner apartment overlooking the sea had everything we needed— a full kitchen with blender, stove, full size refrigerator, toaster, coffee maker, etc, a nice bedroom also facing the ocean, a spacious bathroom and, the best part, a huge outdoor patio with a big table and deck chairs perfect for watching the sunset. We spent most of our non- water time relaxing here. Air conditioning was available but we never needed it, choosing instead to open all of the windows to let the lovely breeze ( there is always a breeze here!) and the ceiling fans cool the space. It was heavenly hearing the waves and feeling the breeze, and looking out at the ocean and Klein Bonaire in the distance— SO much better than a closed-up, fake, air-conditioned space. If you insist on air conditioning and having your space as cool as a feeezer— this isn’t the place for you as then you miss out on having the view from all of the windows and hearing the ocean. I highly recommend Den Laman! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Location and so much more

Feb 28th, 2019

We had two couples stay in the Grouper condo for two weeks. The location is great having Bari reef right out front with the pier for easy entry/exit for dives there. Our suite was great and up to date with everything we needed to enjoy our stay. Having an icemaker was an unexpected bonus and got used a fair bit. The condo has two bedrooms each with its own ensuite which makes sharing this unit with two couple perfect. Being on the second floor I think is the best of both worlds it gets your balcony off the ground so more private than first floor and not as many stairs as third floor units. The balcony does face the Coco beach spot where there is construction and an occasional issue with dust. Probably when we were on the balcony only once did dust blow on us for a second or two. Certainly we never had the buildup of dust on our balcony as indicated by another reviewer. We were visiting the first two weeks of Feb, 2019. We were on the balcony for at least an hour each morning and evening for happy hour. I assume the cleaners swept when they visited but I never once noticed a buildup of dust. There were a couple of nights when there was louder music next door but it seemed to end before we went to bed. The onsite restaurant and dive shop are both excellent and very handy for all the obvious reasons. We only every cooked breakfasts in but the kitchen is equal to most houses so you could cook all meals if you wanted too. Three out of four of us didn’t care so much for the beds and thought they were on the hard side. Myself I can sleep anywhere so I didn’t notice. There are some under cabinet lights that we could not figure how to turn off and that became an issue one or two nights when someone slept on the couch trying to avoid snoring. Shutting off the breaker solved this as the property managers also couldn’t shut them off. WIFI was great in the condo and at the restaurant. The cleaners and office staff were all super friendly and helpful. I think Den Laman is a great value for what we paid, and we would not hesitate to return and request the same condo if we needed that amount of space again. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great location and beautiful view

Feb 18th, 2019

I stayed 8 nights in the "Parrotfish" room (1 bedroom oceanfront), and couldn't have been much happier with my choice. The location is very convenient without being too close or too far from town and the dive sites, and there is plenty of parking. I was a little concerned about late night noise with Coco and Spice being so close, but Friday night was the only night I could even hear it from my patio since the sound of the waves drowns nearly everything else out. The room was extremely spacious, with a large open balcony overlooking a gorgeous view, and I always had a strong wifi signal from either my room or the restaurant. This was my 9th visit to Bonaire, and I don't think I've ever had a rental property with AC units that work as well as these did. Though, the only time I even needed them was in the afternoon when the sun was shining directly into the living room, and in the bedroom at night when I went to bed (this Texas boy likes it cold, and the AC unit will freeze your nips off if you want it to). There is plenty of hot water, as long as you keep your shower somewhat brief. It'll start running out after about 5-6 minutes. My only negative was that it's probably time to re-evaluate that mattress. It's like trying to sleep on a sponge... which some people may like, but, as a side sleeper, I woke up several times each night and had to reposition myself because it got uncomfortable. I at times tried sleeping on the giant ridge in the middle of the mattress, but would eventually just roll off of it. But, outside of that, no complaints. The onsite property managers are all extremely friendly and happy to assist with anything you need. I had something, well, break in the room one night, and they were very quick to respond, even after hours when they can be reached from an on-site telephone. They can also assist with booking dives/tanks with Dive Friends Bonaire having a shop onsite, as well as rental car booking (though, I strongly DO NOT recommend using Avis). And, with a great onsite restaurant, everything about staying here is just flat out convenient. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
