Fantastic stay again
Sep 22nd, 2020
We spent twelve nights at Domes - our fourth Consecutive September. We were pleasantly surprised about how ‘normal’ everything was. We stayed in a luxury private residence with two bedrooms and private pool. It was very quiet, very clean and well stocked. Loved having a washing machine. I can thoroughly recommend The Haute Living room - thanks go to Lena, Sophia and Katerina for their ever cheerful and helpful advice. Nothing was ever too much trouble. When we reported one minor issue in the villa, maintenance arrived in minutes and it was sorted. Special mention must be of Isabella whose excellent service and delightful manner are a credit to her - and Domes. Although there were subtle changes this year, such as no buffet breakfast and no Yosai restaurant, Topos and Blend continue to provide excellent service and variety of food. We had some lovely meals at Topos-lunch and dinner- and the staff were well led by Alex who remembered us from last year and our drinks order! Impressive. Fotini, and Glykeria were memorable for their service with a smile. Our favourite, however, was Blend which too served quality and varied food and had a relaxed ambience. My husband had a fillet steak one night which he said was one of the best he’d ever had...and he’s had many! All the staff there were professional and never stopped moving. Too many to mention by name but, again, the managers - Thanos and Alexandros - led their team well. T you to Katharine in particular for breakfast service. We swapped our half board dinner for lunch and went to Plaka and Elounda few times - both are a short drive or taxi ride away. Plaza is walkable too. We had excellent meals. The vast majority of restaurants and shops were open and everybody was welcoming and attentive. Domes is well placed for site seeing and shopping, with Agios Nikolaos being a short drive away and many ancient ruins such as Gournia and Spinalonga not far. Knossos is about an hour’s drive too - and it is only an hour from the airport. Hiring a car is beneficial and driving is easy and safe. Thank you so much Domes - it was worth two weeks in isolation when we returned home. we’re already looking forward to next year. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Kudos to GM George & team
Sep 21st, 2020
I could write about the Domes of Elounda experience for pages, there's so much greatness to share (the view, the food, the rooms, the staff, the facilities) but I see others have already done this. So instead I'll share how brilliant the staff were and how consistently implemented the Covid protocol was. I have uploaded 2 photos, 1 of each side of the Covid measures provided at check in. We were most impressed by how consistently these were followed around the hotel (we even saw walls being sanitised!) I truly felt wonderful Greek hospitality matched with reassurance that we were safe. I felt for all the staff wearing masks all day in the heat but it didn't seem to bother them at all, for those that wore visors it was wonderful to see their huge smiles. I was impressed to see the General Manager George out and about in the resort every day. I even saw him driving the carts around one day, what a great of checking your guests are ok. You can always tell a hotel will be brilliant when the GM is so visible, the resort runs like clockwork whilst maintaining a relaxed holiday feel. An example, on our check out day our bags were collected and put into our rental car whilst we had breakfast. I was fully expecting the hassle of check out, lining up, waiting for bags etc, not at Domes! Thank you George & team, we will be back. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
How to relax during Covid-19
Sep 20th, 2020
We took the plunge and decided to stay in a hotel with a room that had a little bit of outside space and a small private pool, just in case we were to get shut down inside the hotel during Covid. We adore Greece, but had never visited Crete. The combination of the accommodation on offer, proximity to the airport (just over an hour by car) and the regularity of flights made Domes of Elounda our choice. Overall the hotel handled Covid very well. There was plenty of sanitiser around, screened check-in, golf buggies (see below) wiped down, staff wore masks and visors,. So safe, but it didn't feel heavy-handed at all, so it was easy to relax and forget about it, which was the objective. Crete is a lovely island. There is a lot to do; one could spend weeks here and not get bored. The accommodation was very comfortable and well done. If I’m being picky our shower was a touch cramped and the light switches too numerous. But other than those minor things the room was very nice indeed with big comfortable beds and plenty of space. The air con was powerful and effective. Had we need locked down we’d have been grateful. And we were actually upgraded on arrival, which was a stroke of luck. The resort is bigger than I had realised, split between an older and newer part (we were in the older part). It is on a hill and quite spread out between the 2 main eating areas (a good 10 minute walk). Be prepared for walking - fine for us - or to move around in golf buggies driven by nice staff all of whom bore face masks and in many cases visors too. buggy was never far away if you needed one. And the fact it is spread out gives it a small hotel feel, yet with the facilities of a large hotel. Great. The beach for example required a short walk down from reception through a tunnel; although the road bisects the resort you would almost never know it was there - clever masterplanning , architecture and planting of shrubs and trees have seen to that. The beach area was fairly full by lunchtime on one or two days but had a lot of shade, under olive trees (charming ) and the water is extremely calm and shallow so there is plenty of space. We found it best to go straight after breakfast and then move off to do other things in the early afternoon. There is a bar at one end and a lovely restaurant (Topos) at the other. Discreet beach attendants provided free Bottled water (nice touch - albeit the next step would be to move away from plastic bottles) and drinks and snacks. The service was excellent. So too at Topos, the in-house taverna where Alex and his staff turned out delicious meals at lunch and dinner in a quite exquisite location on the beach with super, airy views of the peninsula opposite and the former leper colony of Spinalonga ( lit beautifully on weekend nights ). This was by far our preferred eatery in the hotel, where both food and service excelled. I think we had 7 meals there in total. The Asian restaurant has been temporarily closed to make for a makeshift outdoor gym next to the adult pool. You couldn’t ask for a gym with a better view, slightly elevated above the beach and close to reception. And it was well-equipped and clean. Lovely ! We generally took breakfast at Tholos restaurant next to reception. Breakfast was decent - not perfect, but still good - and very generously-portioned with plenty of choice and flexibility to mix and match things on the menu. As a breakfast location it was good - shady with views of the sea - if with a bit of a big hotel feel. Service was excellent. During Covid you have to book meals in advance. I'm not sure that’s entirely necessary but that’s the current policy and they have a restaurant booking manager who oversees it efficiently (we got a call when we forgot to book one breakfast!). There was one clerical error made with one of our bookings when we arrived but I can only commend the way the staff rectified it quickly and without question. Spinalonga is a must-visit. And the book ‘The Island’, which is set there, was a family favourite holiday read. So too the village of Plaka , just 5 mins drive further along the coastal road and not visible from the hotel. A charming and sleepy seaside village with lovely tavernas and a small port for trips to the island (or you can go direct from the hotel as we did). 3G has barely reached this little place. Do drive up into the hills above Plaka for spectacular cliff-edge views of the Island and old Cretan villages set amid olive groves. or you can head back to Elounda just a short drive/cab ride in the other direction (plenty of cabs to book). The hotel has a (separately paid for) water sports facility with motor boat, waterskiing, Tube-riding, pedaoss etc. But no sailing or windsurfing if that’s your thing. We hired a Self-drive outboard boat for the morning and did 3 snorkelling stops In gin clear and calm waters around the peninsular , which we had completely to ourselves. Not bad for the Med in mid summer. There is an in-house portrait photographer that we found to be both very good and reasonably priced compared to home. That’s the good stuff. Less good (1) the tennis court has an ancient carpet as a surface and a very uneven bounce. Not up to scratch. (2) the large family pool , alongside which the second main restaurant Blend sits, is devoid of charm and feels more like the edge of a mall than a holiday resort. Fine for young families, but that’s it. This would be easy and cheap to fix with more planting and (perhaps currently constrained by Covid) softer furnishings. Overall we were very pleased with our choice of hotel. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
What hotelier should be about!
Sep 20th, 2020
This hotel is really amazing! The staff is just incredible! As we arrived we were warmly welcomed by Aspasia! Made us feel at home. From the next day everyone new my whole gamily by name. Extremely attentive staff. Great rooms! The beach is also one of the best, small and cozy. With many trees to provide shade. The guys at the beach also work super hard and remembered us from day one. I used to take swims right after breakfast. Would just come down go into the water for about 20min, always would be a towel waiting me once i was out. Even though i was the first one at the beach with no one in sight. We ate very well at all the restaurants. With good selection and great quality. Kids club was great. All the classes as well as babysitting service provided were very nice! This hotel truly deserves 6 starts. Mostly for its absolutely incredible staff!! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

We have just returned from the domes having had the holiday of a lifetime. Thank you to George manager for giving us such an amazing experience. The rest of the staff made our holiday most enjoyable looking after us in every possible way they make you feel so welcome especially in the restaurant's and on reception. Holidaying in these uncertain times is scary but at the domes everything is spotless and we felt very safe here. We had suite 321 withamazing sea views and a wonderful pool. Julie our cleaner was brilliant and cleaned every day to a very high standard. Thank you again everyone and see you all next year xx TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
