WORDS OF WARNING - THINK TWICE BEFORE BOOKING

Rebranded lately from Double Tree to ‘Curio Collection’ this ‘Hilton’ hotel (not really Hilton but a soft brand) is on the hillside south of Fuengirola in the middle of nowhere. It is a nice place overall but there are several issues to consider before booking this place. My combined points to this hotel would be 2,5 - below average but on the poorer side because of several issues. LOCATION 1 / 5 The hotel is located between Benalmádena and Fuengirola. It is uphill next to some holiday lettings in an area where there is nothing but building sites. You have to have a car (or use taxis) to get around. It is 9 km south of Fuengirola - 13 - 20 minutes by car. Parking at the hotel is free but that is a small plus for the remote location. Walking down and up would not come to a question. Even though it looks on the map it’s only around 20 minutes to walk down a) it is extra steep road at the bottom and walking back would be a nightmare b) there is nothing down there either. They provide a ‘mini train’ at certain times a day to go up / down the hill. ROOM 2 / 5 for the room In previous reviews people have complained about the quirky room layout. In early February 2020 when the prices were possibly at their lowest and hotel nearly empty we were upgraded to two-storey suite in north tower where the living room was on first level and bedroom upstairs in a balcony. It was a nice room and probably less quirky than smaller standard rooms. Even in the suite room there were some odd things: bathtub at the end of the bed. Downstairs and upstairs had very old LG TVs and the transmission & picture quality for the two English speaking news channels were very bad. We also had issues with the door lock: it only opened with first lifting the handle up and then pushing it down - on tenth try if one was lucky. We had to have the hotel staff open the door several times during our 2 nights stay. The lock was not fixed - the just played around with it until it opened. VIEWS AND NORTH OR SOUTH TOWER 3 / 5 First they seem to be enlarging the hotel with a third tower north of the north tower. All rooms on higher floors (4 floors in south tower [odd numbered rooms], 5 floors in north tower [even numbered rooms]) have at least partial sea views over houses and very many cranes. This is a building site. The amenities are easily accessible from south tower - from north tower one has to go first to lobby level and use other elevators from there to go up to the rooftop pool or down to garden pool, indoor pool or the separate sporting centre. If you can choose I would definitely recommend south tower. However the tennis courts are there and you”d hear the strokes if your room is facing the courts (west). FACILITIES In winter 2 / 5 - in warmer weather could have received higher rating. Internet problems - WiFi does not reach all areas of the hotel. Nearly all outside areas are without coverage. In my view the only reason why one could consider this place are the sporting facilities next door but they do not belong the hotel! And Tesla drivers. There is one floor reserved only for parking your Tesla in a supercharger. I would understand this is a better hotel and at a better location - not in this place. In the hotel there is one pools outside (too cold water in February), cold rooftop pool (possibly at extra charge when the weather is warmer). There is also an indoor pool for serious swimmers - to me the water was too cold. In the winter time the only option is the spa (not part of the hotel - price for hotel guests 31,5 Euros person for 2 hours max) where the sauna and the indoor pool featured in the hotels promo pictures and videos is located. Normal price 35 euros. In my view these amenities should be removed from the hotel promos and also from TA listing should be separate for these. Next to south tower there is the sporting club (not part of the hotel) that has various grounds for tennis, volley ball etc. There are a few restaurants/bars in the hotel - consider this place as a resort where you’d be confined for the time of you stay / holiday but not still have proper restaurants. Lastly, there are several meeting rooms - possibly another reason why someone would end up staying in this place. BREAKFAST 2 / 5 Served at MED restaurant on level -1 (below lobby floor) is buffet and very limited even compared to several other Spanish hotels we stayed in during our tour of Andalucia. In fact this one was the poorest. TIPS If you are to come to this area stay as close to the town centres as possible. There are plenty to choose from starting from Estepona in south even up to Malaga. Avoid hotels on hillsides - unless you have a car - but then there’s the parking problem down at the beach level. In winter this was not an issue but on warmer weather I can imagine how congested the beach boulevard can get. Go inland (Grenada, Ronda, Górdoba, Sevilla or the small towns, it’s much nicer than staying at the beach front hotels mostly built in 1960 - this is after all the place where the Spanish mass tourism started. Great stay!

Was here on a business trip, which I highly can recommend. The hotel have everything you need; bars, several great restaurants and a great location very close to the ocean. The rooftop pool is amazing, but unfortunately too cold for January;) The room was amazing and with a great view over the ocean. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Disappointed

We are both Hilton diamond members and decided to stay a few nights here and get some winter sun. There is no mention on the Hilton website about nearby construction works. Wish we’d looked on trip advisor as many people mention it! The standard reply from reading the reviews are that the works are not within the hotel demise... they may not be but drilling, cutting metals, grinding, beeping from forklifts and the overhead crane several feet the other side of a bamboo fence is close enough! Thankfully we were only disturbed for 2 days.. sitting on the balcony was unbearable at some times. It certainly wasn’t relaxing- which is what a break away from home is meant to be. The 9 construction cranes directly opposite thankfully weren’t in full swing with the massive construction works taking place. Hotel has some quirks! As mentioned many times, no door on a toilet pan does take some getting used to! Staff engagement was limited - several posted feedbacks also mention staff attitude, it certainly isn’t a great as the Hilton outside Faro, Portugal where we recent stayed or for that matter in Hilton’s, maybe that brand of Hilton doesn’t have the same customer care skills course?.. most appeared polite and very friendly. The bar man at the roof top infinity pool might want to think about changing career if he so dislikes talking to people... design and functionality of the general hotel was nice - not homely or comfortable as you’d expect from a hotel - the designers have somewhat lost the feel that a hotel should be comfy and warm.. Corridor noise was unbearable at times till gone midnight.. parking and location was great.. would have been nice on checkout to have been asked did we have a nice time and thank you for staying and have a safe flight. Didn’t even say goodbye! Hence the comment about customer care and lack of training... TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Very mixed feelings

The hotel itself is quite nice, but definitely not cosy. The rooms are spacious. One thing that shocked us was the restaurant. Please take a look at the picture. The interior looks like a cheap diner rather than a hotel restaurant. No ambiance whatsoever. The restaurant upstairs is even worse. Somebody totally forgot that hotels are made to feel nice and not only look fancy. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

just for normal guests not Hilton Hhonors members with some quality expectations. if you are a Hilton member and might have some quality expectations, you might end up with big frustrations. the employees must be educated to be more friendly to the guests. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
