Wasn’t what I was hoping for

Aug 10th, 2020

Stayed at the fairmont for the weekend with some family. I chose to stay the the Fairmont because I love staying at iconic places rich with history. The chateau is a great location if you want to be at the heart of the action in Ottawa! One thing that I did not expect was that there was no complimentary wifi in the room. We had to sign up for a “membership” with the hotel’s loyalty program. We were told once we are members, we can accept the room “charge” for internet and they would just remove it at check out. We found that quite cumbersome and tedious especially for the quality of service we were expecting for Fairmont. We had to make sure to check out at the front desk so that they will remove the charge. Parking is also not free. There is a daily charge of $40 per night with in and out privilege. We opted to find our own parking. The room itself was okay. We stayed in the first floor. I loved the high ceiling and the space of the room. I booked the deluxe double room with 2 double beds. The bathtub in the washroom was a little dated and had some stain marks. The bathroom sink would pool with water after simply brushing your teeth or washing your hands; the water just took some time to drain. I do commend the staff for practicing great measures to ensure social distancing and safety precautions however over all I was a little disappointed with our stay because a few areas of the the hotel was restricted. I do understand it is for the safety of everyone, due to Covid. It was most probably to restrict the amount of space for cleaning and disinfecting. Also the stairs to the Mezzanine or the lounges etc were not accessible. Certain dine-in services were also not available. Even just walking into the hotel was a little underwhelming. The lobby was empty since the seats and tables were taken out to enforce social distancing. The reading rooms were blocked off. Lights in areas of the hotel were turned off. All entrances except the main entrance was blocked off to control traffic. I suggest possibly holding off staying at the Hotel for awhile if you plan on staying for the sole purpose of being able to enjoy and appreciate the hotel. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

It was certainly different

We were not certain what a hotel stay during these strange days would be like, but we were willing to try it out. This grand hotel reopened in July with some great room rates. We booked the superior room. The website indicated the precautions being taken and the reduced amenities. The doormen were most welcoming, but cannot handle your luggage. Carts are available. Before registering, you put on a mask, have a temperature check and sanitize your hands. Check in is smooth, but don't ask for a room upgrade. Inventory is reduced as rooms are left vacant for 48 hours. There is no daily housekeeping, extra towels are delivered on request as are shower caps, etc. Don't expect pens and paper. The TV remote is in a plastic bag. Coffee maker, coffee and tea are in the cabinet. The mini bar fridge is empty. The swimming pool and gym are available by appointment for one hour. Its a beautiful pool, book and make time for the experience. One patio restaurant is open in the hotel with lots of nearby options with dining inside and out. With many tourist attractions have gradually reopened, and with smaller crowds, visiting them is very comfortable. Parking is $40 per day, no valet service and with in and out privileges. The lot is small so you may need to park on the ramp. If planning a trip to Ottawa, try this grand old hotel. The discount won't last forever. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

A exceptional get away for our 36th Wedding Anniversary in the age of Coivid 19!

We had a delightful stay at the Chateau earlier this week. The staff were very welcoming. Safety measures that were in place did not interfere with the enjoyment of our visit. We had drinks on the deck with stunning views of The Ottawa River. Our room was very comfortable and spacious. The architecture, pictures of well known guests over the years, the bust of Sir Wilfred Laurier in the lobby makes this ideal for the history buff. This grand old Dame is located in the center of town which makes walking everywhere easy A wonderful staycation experience! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Amazing Staff

I book this hotel when I come to visit my daughter who is at UOttawa. We had this weekend planned for months with my other two daughters. Turned out I ended up moving her out of her dorm and home, but she got to show my other two girls where she lives and where she is going to live next year and a bit of the campus.
