Lavish and massive spa complex; friendly staff
Rooms are a tad outdated
The Gideon Putnam resort has served as an upstate New York hideaway for more than 75 years. Tucked inside Saratoga Spa State Park in Saratoga Springs, the property is chock-full of outdoor activities: Cross-country skiing is popular in the winter and hiking takes over in the warmer months. And then there's the legendary Roosevelt Baths & Spa, a popular R&R hot spot since the 1930s. In keeping with the renowned regional pastime (mineral baths have drawn visitors to Saratoga Springs since the mid-1800s), the spa features cold and warm mineral water treatments as well as massage services. Recent guests suggest exploring the grounds before retiring to the high-end accommodations, which feature calming neutral tones and upscale amenities, such as plush bedding and lavish bath products. In addition to the luxurious accommodations, recent visitors praise the courteous and helpful hotel staff. The only downside, according to a few previous visitors, is that the rooms are a bit outdated and could use a facelift. Still, despite this minor drawback, recent guests report a pleasant experience overall.

Critic Reviews

This lovely Georgian revival-style brick hotel sits amid the 2,200 acres of Saratoga Spa State Park. Tall windows look out onto front and rear gardens, and the interior is decorated in a gracious, traditional style.

Travel + Leisure

The Gideon Putnam was built in the 1930's to accommodate well-heeled guests who were 'taking the waters' at various nearby mineral springs in what is now the Saratoga Spa State Park.

Condé Nast Traveler

Its main draws now are the same as they were in the '30s: Wellness-seekers come for the resort's famous Roosevelt Spa, where bathers float in reddish, vaguely sulfuric Saratoga Springs mineral water; in the summers, pearl-and-seersucker-wearing city folk come up to watch the horse races.
