Horrible rooms, horrible customer service, AVOID

Aug 15th, 2019

I am cross posting this on every reviewing site possible because I am appalled by how this hotel is operated. Upon checking in, the front desk employees were both talking about how frazzled they were, completely unprofessional, I don’t want to hear that they’re unable to handle their jobs. They proceeded to argue with one another about whether the room I was assigned was occupied and one women definitively stated it wasn’t. I go up to the room, open the door, and find that the room is occupied, there are belongings everywhere and an unmade bed. I go back down, instead of ushering me past the line to inquire why I’m back in the lobby with my luggage and keys, I wait behind 4 people. I told the manager how dangerous it is to give keys to someone to an occupied room. The risk of being the victim of a crime is very real, there is no level of security to enter the hotel either. She brushed it off as an unfortunate mistake, but I told her it’s not unfortunate, it’s horrifying and can result in a lawsuit for them. After reading reviews, it appears the front desk staff has done this to multiple guests, including another person I work with who stayed in the hotel last year. The room I’m ultimately assigned to is ridiculous. It’s a horrible shape, there’s a sloped ceiling so you’ll hit your head getting out of bed, there’s a sink in the closet. The air conditioning is either on or off, it will not kick on and off based on a thermostat, which means the room is freezing or hot, and that’s when it actually works. When I got into the room 2 of the lamps had burned out light bulbs. The rugs are dirty, the hotel is old and not worth a fraction of the price they charge. Do not stay here, save your money, go elsewhere. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Gideon Putnam is long in the tooth

Aug 14th, 2019

Shuttle to/from town and race track was FANTASTIC! Always available, drivers couldn't have been any nicer. Best pancakes we've ever had. Internet was horrible, room dated: no dust ruffle, 2 small frigs of which neither worked. AC was weak. Property needs freshening up: paint, decor. Prior to our stay and during it, Gideon phone was NOT answered multiple times Elevator (only 1) was slower than molasses in January. Almost everyone resorted to using the stairs. I feel terrible for folks that couldn't walk well enough to use stairs. Way too expensive for the condition of the property. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Perfect hotel if your going to Saratoga performing arts center!

Aug 12th, 2019

I was bummed searching for a reasonable hotel to crash after the show. Everything was so expensive as it was a busy time with the show and Saratoga races. We decided to pay a bit more and stay at this property because it was within walking distance. Really glad we did not only was it simple but the place is beautiful. Yes is has its bumps. It’s very old lol but it’s old charm makes the imperfections non existent to me. The staff as well. Very friendly and helpful not stuffy at all. If a crack in the ceiling is going to make you miserable and ruin your entire trip this is not for you. If you enjoy timeless real estate and can imagine what this place was and can get past that it’s not a perfect new cookie cutter construction then you will love it. Very unique and peaceful. Didn’t want to leave. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Historic But Tired

Aug 10th, 2019

We felt lucky to find a room available for race season when we booked in the spring. We had a choice between the Hilton Garden Inn and the Gideon Putnam for about the same price. We opted for the historic hotel. The history and reviews about service made us make the choice but when we return next year we will opt for the more modern amenities at the Hilton. Upon check in at 4:00 no valet or bellman was available. We managed our own luggage and hauled it from the parking lot. When we wanted a shuttle ride to the track (and despite being out front first) a group of 9 women pushed ahead and there was no room. In order to make the first race we drove ourselves because the second shuttle was used for downtown runs only. The bar was supposed to close at 11:00 pm but was shut tight when we stopped in before 10:00 pm. The front desk told us they close early if it is slow. If you return to the hotel after 11:00 pm there are no valets so you must park yourself. Free valet is touted as one of the resort amenities but they don’t staff it well enough to be useful. Everyone is pleasant and welcoming but the hotel feels like it is understaffed and that they are having to cut corners to stay afloat. What a showplace it must have been in its day but the luster has been lost. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Four star prices for a two star hotel

Aug 9th, 2019

The furnishings are outdated and the bedding looks like it was stolen from an Econo Lodge. Staff was very harried when we checked in, they were having computer issues and seemed frazzled by people trying to check in and the process took forever. For the obscene amount of money they charge, I would expect a high caliber resort and first class service, at worst a functioning hotel with updated furniture. Sadly, this hotel offered neither. I've stayed at the nearby Courtyard and that is much nicer/more modern/better service. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
