Jet-set bohemians and creative types have flocked to GoldenEye since the mid 20th century, when it was the cliff-top retreat of Ian Fleming, who wrote 14 of his James Bond novels here. Fresh from a two-year overhaul completed in 2010 courtesy of its current owner, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, the property has morphed from private villa rental to full-fledged 22-room hotel.

Also on these 30 acres of gardens and tropical forest are ten large, airy one-bedroom and two-bedroom villas with custom-designed wooden furnishings, full kitchens (all guests get a welcome bottle of Blackwell Rum) and an indoor-outdoor style of louvered windows and French doors opening onto wide decks. All but one villa has porch steps that lead right on the sand of the beach.

Whether you're a fan of James Bond or luxury getaways, this exclusive address 20 minutes east of Ocho Rios holds special appeal. In 1946 James Bond creator Ian Fleming bought what was a donkey racecourse on a lagoon and built a villa that is now owned by Island Records magnate Chris Blackwell.

Yes, there are some nods to Bond – but GoldenEye is mainly about Jamaica, a sensibility found in the blazingly colored fabrics, breezy breakfasts on the verandah with cups of Blue Mountain coffee, and heaps of tropical fruit.

Goldeneye, to be clear, is not an easy place to leave. The land – the former home of Ian Fleming, where he wrote each of the 14 James Bond thrillers that would cement his place in literary and cinematic history – sits next to the tiny town of Oracabessa, on the northern coast.
