Overview

Boutique resort where Ian Fleming created the iconic character James Bond
Lackluster customer service and cuisine
In 1946, a former officer in the British Royal Navy bought some land in northern Jamaica and named it GoldenEye. Hoping to recuperate from the psychological toll of World War II, he planned to spend the rest of his days relaxing and writing in the tropics. The man's name was Ian Fleming, and it was here that he dreamed up the now legendary character James Bond. Once a writer's retreat, GoldenEye is now a fully functioning boutique resort, where you can indulge in a massage at FieldSpa or go snorkeling in a 4-acre lagoon. You can stay in the Fleming Villa, where the famed author penned "Casino Royale," or in various other villas, lagoon cottages or beach huts, each with an outdoor shower, a clawfoot tub, a welcome gift of Blackwell rum and complimentary Wi-Fi access to keep both secret agents and regular guests connected to the outside world. And even a spy's got to eat: You can satiate your appetite at one of two eateries: the treehouse-style Gazebo, which serves internationally inspired dishes, and Bizot Bar, where you can savor casual Jamaican dishes poolside while sipping a classic martini – shaken, not stirred. Although many vacationers praise the property's grounds and accommodations, several say the resort's customer service and cuisine are subpar at best. Note: Some areas will be temporarily unavailable while the property undergoes renovations from early May to mid-December 2019.

Jet-set bohemians and creative types have flocked to GoldenEye since the mid 20th century, when it was the cliff-top retreat of Ian Fleming, who wrote 14 of his James Bond novels here. Fresh from a two-year overhaul completed in 2010 courtesy of its current owner, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, the property has morphed from private villa rental to full-fledged 22-room hotel.

Also on these 30 acres of gardens and tropical forest are ten large, airy one-bedroom and two-bedroom villas with custom-designed wooden furnishings, full kitchens (all guests get a welcome bottle of Blackwell Rum) and an indoor-outdoor style of louvered windows and French doors opening onto wide decks. All but one villa has porch steps that lead right on the sand of the beach.

Whether you're a fan of James Bond or luxury getaways, this exclusive address 20 minutes east of Ocho Rios holds special appeal. In 1946 James Bond creator Ian Fleming bought what was a donkey racecourse on a lagoon and built a villa that is now owned by Island Records magnate Chris Blackwell.

Yes, there are some nods to Bond – but GoldenEye is mainly about Jamaica, a sensibility found in the blazingly colored fabrics, breezy breakfasts on the verandah with cups of Blue Mountain coffee, and heaps of tropical fruit.

Goldeneye, to be clear, is not an easy place to leave. The land – the former home of Ian Fleming, where he wrote each of the 14 James Bond thrillers that would cement his place in literary and cinematic history – sits next to the tiny town of Oracabessa, on the northern coast.
